- The 2024 BYD Seagull EV comes across as a promising urban vehicle. It is a proper 4-door 4-seater car and has segment first / unique features including a rotating center screen. Here is a closer look at the car from the 2024 Bangkok International Motorshow.

yes it could be rival but not possible with current import rules, that will impact price to jump from tiago ev rival to punch ev rival.
Only thing is it fails to arrest external noise inside the car and the initial pick up is slow. But its a very good car for the city travel..!

I doubt BYD sells this car in India. With a 70% import duty on Completely Built Units (CBU), to offer this car for under 10 lakhs, it would need to be imported at around 5 lakhs. After factoring in the 70% import duty, the price would amount to 8.5 lakhs. I don't think it's possible.

Because it is heavy. High school physics will tell you how much energy is wasted in toting around a 300 kg battery for the lifetime of the car.

You want to sound smart on the internet, and I don't blame you for it - it's human nature.
What you don't want to or are unable to provide an argument for is how is that different from lugging an exhaust, an intake system, a radiator, a transmission, and then simply an engine block made out of aluminum alloy to move itself and then the car. All of this wights easily beyond 300 kg in a 1000 kg car. A typical combustion engine wastes 60% or more of it's chemical energy in the form of heat - heat that has to be cooled down or released as exhaust. About 25% or less energy is transferred to the wheels. A typical EV has about 10% loss and the rest is transferred to the wheels.
Engines wear out, too. And just like good maintenance will ensure ICE lasts a long time, good practices of using an EV ensures that batteries last a long while. The 300-800 recharge cycles are only for 80% of degradation. That doesn't mean the batteries are now as good as dead. A lot of people are still driving their 11-12 year old Tesla Model S with 40% battery health and 100-110 miles of range. That battery tech is 10 years old and we have only made improvements in battery chemistry and reliability since then.

To me it seems like they are saying petrol has, weight for weight 100 times the energy density of Li ion batteries. The efficiency required to put li ion batteries on par with ice vehicles requires that li ion has at least 1/5th the energy density of petrol. That is not the case. Hence the excess weight is carried around without return for the life of the car. That is silly. A battery powered auto rickshaw may not be so silly but then there are people who want Tesla wheels and not sensible auto rickshaw wheels. Just by the way, the auto rickshaw is a livelihood earner for thousands of people in India so let's not sneer at them. However, even they would prefer cng, lpg over batteries. We are not a battery country. We do not have the charging infrastructure. Batteries are heavy and expensive. Maybe that's a surplus of human nature talking. You are welcome to your BEV and you are also welcome to ignore the fact that I think it's a very silly idea.

The infrastructure required to extract, refine, store, transport the "dense fuel" is conveniently ignored? We would not want to exclude that, would we?
Meanwhile, you can have your solar panels to charge your car once the Li-ion cells are put on wheels. Better yet, thanks to pressing demands, there are Na-ion batteries already available with way superior property - but just not as energy dense, as they are about energy dense as Li-ions were in the early to mid 90s. But that's good news, because look where we are with Li-ion today.
You're not "lugging" a battery, you're carrying vessel that stores energy - can store 100% clean energy if powered by solar, wind, hydro or geothermal energy, and even cleaner once Na-ion batteries replace the Li-ion ones. Please make an argument for clean fossil fuel that is comparable.
End of the day we are again allowing Chinese market in India

Check USA prices for Seal - 41 lakh. BYD is selling for same price here (ofcourse not importing from US). Likewise, they can price the Seagull at 9-10 lakh (same price as they sell in USA)
