    To make sure you can receive texts from US while on secondary eSIM, you need to setup WiFi calling for the primary sim card before leaving home. When you get to your overseas destination, turn on both primary and secondary SIM cards. Select “secondary” for cellular data, select“primary”for default voice line. I was then able to get texts from banks. This is for an iPhone.

    Thank you for this video! I was thinking there has got to be an easier and cheaper way as I am from Canada too and our plans are insane and the packages for traveling are just as bad. I think this is a game changer for travel and I have a teenager that I want to have some freedom to use his phone but not too much while on vacation so this could work as you have the option on how much data you can have. Love Airalo - used it in Jamaica in Dec. I felt like it was a scam because it was too easy lol. I not only did the multiple physical sim game but I carried two phones! I had an older phone I used as my travel phone haha. Question: have to come across any solutions for us Canadians for esims or onus sims that can be used on a cruise? I know several US carriers offer that option but I haven't had much luck finding one here.

      That's a very good question that I might be able to help with. I am from Canada, my wife is from Thailand. I watched this video because I wanted a data plan when we hit the ground in Vietnam in Feb. Until I can actually get to my favorite tourist E-Sim shop which is a much better deal then these E-sims for long term stays. I don't know where you are going but I watched this video yesterday and found it useful. For long term you may want to do what I'm doing, purchasing a small data plan to get me started and then looking for the Best Local data plan that may include calling. From what I've gathered. E-Sims are great for short term usage and for those that stay somewhere for a week or 2 on vacation. For those of us that travel for the Winter months or digital nomads that stay in one place for longer periods, we are better off on a local month to month deal. Here in Thailand for sure and because I been to Vietnam before same goes there as well. Hope that helps, here's the link to that video czcams.com/video/8HxWyjIRSVo/video.htmlsi=aCZkVA8FTQck5t8f and Be Well.

What’s the advantage or difference with the ESim? Will I be able to use it when not in Wifi? Also can I make actual calls back home to canada with an eSIM outside of a wifi connection and not be charged roaming?

    • @coral2534
      @coral2534 Před 3 měsíci

      I’m also Canadian and also just got back from Thailand! The advantage of getting an esim is you have data when you don’t have access to wifi, eg. when you’re out and about and you need to order a Grab/Bolt/Uber. So yes you will be able to use it when you’re out of wifi. You can make calls through apps that uses data, eg. WhatsApp. You will not be able to make calls through your plan you have at home. The Thai esim actually includes phone calls and you get a local number. I never used it so I can’t comment how it worked

However, when I went back to the install, it seems to be done installing, so now I'm not sure about the settings or if the installation was done correctly. Is there a way to check the settings, or does everything default to my original primary until I travel?

      I had the same problem. I went to the settings app on my phone and made sure that the roaming feature was in the off mode. It wasn't so I turned it off and I think I need to just turn it on once I get to my 1st travel country. At least I hope that is correct!

    Very good video, you have an excellent you tube voice. The step by step was very good. I did find it a bit confusing around the 10 min mark. I think what you are trying to say. Continue to use your primary number while in Canada and when you arrive outside of Canada switch to secondary number. I think that’s what you meant. On another note unless I am mistaken you cannot receive text messages from Canada if people are in your contacts.? I have tried this twice and people could not send me text messages. I have two issues first the bank will send a verification code to your primary number which is now turned off. Second when both my wife and I were travelling we could not text each other. I think one solution is to switch to what’s app. Another video I watched mention setting your phone to wifi calling, not clear on that suggestion either. Anyway keep up the good work, feel free to correct me if I made a wrong comment. Cheers Vancouver Island.

      James, Happy to Wander, I am an Airalo rookie. About to use for the first time & delighted to find a couple of fellow Canadians with experience. I understand browsing websites / apps is same as being at home however is there a solution to texting? I expect as Airalo is a 3rd party provider my Canadian network number will not work. Is WhatsApp a solution? Any help you can provide would be super appreciated. Thank you.

    I will definitely be using this website now silly question but when I get to Spain and I’m in my Airbnb, of course I want to use the Wi-Fi so do I have to switch off the Sims card to primary again or do I just keep it on the secondary and then just connect through my Wi-FiI do have an iPhone

    • @HappytoWander
      @HappytoWander  Před 29 dny +1

      No need to switch it (at least from personal experience). You should be able to just connect to your airbnb wifi as normal without doing anything to your eSIM!

    Hey there, fellow Canadian! Quick question, totally unrelated to your last video (which was awesome, by the way). I'm currently in Thailand, gearing up for a month-long escapade to Vietnam with the missus starting Feb 1st.
    Now, about your video setup-I'm on the Android side of the tech spectrum, and I'm genuinely curious about the magic you worked with your iPhone. Which video editor did you use? More specifically, I'm intrigued by the way you seamlessly integrate your smartphone screen on the right side while diving into the details. I'm itching to incorporate that wizardry into my content; got a cool idea in mind. Any tips or tools you can share?
    Thanks a bunch for your time, and here's to safe travels and endless creative vibes. Cheers!"

      Hey! Thanks so much for the nice comment :) it’s honestly nothing complicated - I just screen recorded what I was doing on my phone and then overlayed it on top of my “talking head video”, and added an iphone frame over it! I use Adobe Premiere to edit on my laptop though. Hope that helps, and safe travels!

    Fantastic video! One question, you say you can make calls and text using the app. Do you have to buy the data, talk and text package or can you use the data only and use wifi calling if your phone has that feature? Also when you activate the eSIM and it is switched over to the eSIM, I assume all the features of your phone will be available on the eSIM and NOT on your primary provider. I was also not clear on how your actual primary phone number will work on the eSIM as I think you may have indicated. Thanks for your help.

    • @jamesburwash5635

      Here is my experience, your primary number does not work. So you cannot receive text messages or phone calls. Having said that if you text someone first then they can text you back. Not sure what you meant by all your features on the phone , if you mean apps, then yes. There have been videos about wifi calling but the warning is switch it on before you leave home. I don’t think Airlo offers anything other than data. If you stop the video somewhere around the 10 min mark and read the message on the phone it says you cannot receive texts from people in your contacts.

    Thank you for this. Questions I still have… Do people use my existing phone number or a new phone number? If people are trying to text me or call me from Canada on my usual number, what happens? Do people in the destination country use my existing or secondary phone number? When I’m in the destination country I only use secondary? Do I turn the app on and then just use my phone as I would in Canada? Or do I do everything through the app?

    I am not tech savy. I planned to ask my provider Tmobile to unlock. I fly on May 8, when do I have them unlock?
    Once unlocked, I then get esim upon arriving Narita terminal 1. Is it possible to have the staff at the store to install esim for me?
    Anything else i need to know or do?

    Interesting to see the end users, I work for a company that provides an eSIM solution/system to MNOs such as Verizon, Vodafone, Webbing etc., eSIMs are relatively new technology and not widely used yet, but this is the future, especially suitable for travelling.

    Got the app.... Am concerned no phone # to switch over. Last year while in Europe a physical SIM card provided a secondary phone#. For basically the same price that i bought amsterdam airport. Debating to take my older Samsung to use a physical SIM with phone#???? Decisions decisions. As well as to store pics & video in secondary storage slot that older Samsung has but my pixel doesn't....
    Trying to decide if i actually NEED a phone # instead of using WhatsApp, Instagram & Facebook phone???

    Do you know if you have to have an "unlocked" phone aka phone is paid off to use e-sims? It's always been my understanding I couldn't use e-sims or a sim card because I always do the two year pay for your phone plan and usually buy a new phone with the old as trade in the same way...

    • @HappytoWander
      @HappytoWander  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Ooh I haven’t had experience with this as my phone is unlocked but I just had a look for you and it does seem like your phone needs to be unlocked to use Airalo. Here’s what it says on their website: “To use an eSIM with Airalo, your device needs to be unlocked. An unlocked phone is a phone that isn’t under a contractual obligation - you’re free to insert a SIM or activate an eSIM plan from any carrier you like. If your phone is locked, you’ll only be able to use the SIM or eSIM given to you by your provider.”
      You can find more info here: www.airalo.com/blog/using-an-esim-for-the-first-time-what-you-need-to-know
      Hope that helps!

    Quick question. If you already have an existing eSIM line on your iPhone, is it still possible to add another eSIM line? Will the new eSIM cancel the previous one? How many eSIM lines can you have on an iPhone? I have a physical SIM card and an eSIM line already on my phone and need to go to Egypt and Jordan in 3 weeks for about 18 days. What do you advise please. Thanks much.

      Hi I’m pretty sure you can have multiple installed! You just need to make sure you toggle on the right one for each destination. I haven’t had experience with this though so it might be best to reach out to Airalo customer support if you’re still unsure. Hope that helps!

    eSIM videos are somewhat confusing. Some including Airalo video say choose Primary (home network) for sending iMessage. Another video says use secondary for iMessage and FaceTime and switch messages in settings to “send” messages from you email address rather than phone #. If i use primary esim for anything wouldn’t i risk getting charges from my carrier at home? Thanks.

    • @jamesburwash5635
      @jamesburwash5635 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes if you use your primary phone number overseas you will be charged. However having said that if you have wifi calling activated and airplane mode on it should be okay. Otherwise only use secondary eSIM. Which raises the issue that you cannot receive text messages from non Apple users like a bank access code.

    Tried Airalo last year but I didn’t have all my normal functions. I had to turn off my phone number. Annoying since no one can call me on my regular phone number. And iMessage and phone calls didn’t work either.
