No problem. I'm just glad that I could use the Russian words for 'upside down' on the same day that I learned it. I learned 'вверх ногами' today, and was able to use it already!!!!!!!!!!!!

One year in the Russian language and I can say, telling time is one of my weakness. Universally, people should be able to tell time in two ways. The twelve-hour time or the military time. Russian has it all in variety of ways! You don't want this way, let me tell you this other way, oh, how about this one....

Hey! You need to understand them all, but you don't need to use all of them in speech. Military time is very strict and almost has no variety:) Choose the easiest way for you. Good luck!:)

This is so interesting! In England we say half (past) four to mean 4.30, but it seems in Russian half four means 3.30?
Именно, Урсула! Полчетвёртого means "half of the fourth hour", we take the 4th hour (as 60 min) and refer to its half, which is 30 min, so it's 3:30.

Interesting and useful video. It seems that there is no A.M. or P.M. as in English. Therefore, the easiest way to say at 3:50 p.m. would seem to be "в три пятьдесят днём". If it was 3:50 a.m. it would be "в три пятьдесят утром". Please correct me if I am wrong. Спасибо, Макс.

Thanks Max for this video, however I'm still confused - at one point you had the clock at a quarter to seven but said it was a quarter to five. And secondly when it's 2.10 you seem to be saying ten minutes three! I understand the first way of saying 3.40 as 4 o"clock without 20 minutes but am lost with the second half of the video.
Simon Tolson, it has to do with the genitive case & nominative case. See my reply about the audio. In parentheses, I tried to translate this into an English way as close as possible. It might help.

Ты абсолютно прав по поводу "без четверти пять" - моя ошибка, молодец, что заметил:-) 2:10 - это 'десять минуть третьего', здесь всё верно! 2:10 it's 10 past 2 in English, but in Russian we say another way: 'it is beginning of 3, so 10 min of 3rd. 10 min past but they are going to 3 and this is our destination' I cannot translate it more correctly to English, but I hope you got the idea:)

Я слышал: пол шестого 5:30 (half of the sixth hour); двадцать минут пятого 4:20 (20 minutes of the fifth hour); без четверти семь 6:45 (without a quarter from hour 7); двадцат три часа сорок шесть минут 11:46pm или ночь.
I need to practice this a lot. But, in the future, I want to make a video trying to translate these in a literal but English way that makes sense to the English speaking mind. I will be thinking about better ways to translate these. This lesson was challenging. I'm trying to only use the word 'of' for genitive case words, & not for nominative. без четверти needs a better translation. I'm thinking about 'A quarter of an hour less than 7 o'clock. I will try to think about better ways to translate.

Всё хорошо, только не нужно слово "часов".
В пять часов - нормально.
В семнадцать "ноль-ноль"(пишем нУль, произносим нОль) - не надо слово часов.
Сейчас без пяти пять .
