- Ukrainian units conducted an attack on two of the Russian Aerospace Forces’ aircraft, specifically targeting an A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft (AWACS) aircraft and an IL-22 transport plane, which were over the Sea of Azov. A-50 had been downed, while the IL-22 had been damaged - it remained airborne and attempted to reach the nearest airfield but disappeared from radars in the vicinity of Kerch after initiating its descent.

This plane (A50), is used to help navigate Russian bombers …employing Glide Bombs against Ukrainian defensive lines! 👀

@@TheFrewahTrue, but transferring those planes of which they only have 5 or 6 would mean unprotecting other places. For example, a few months ago I saw reports that an S-400 battery that was in the Kuril Islands "disappeared" from there, which is supposed to have been sent to Ukraine or transferred nearby another similar case I saw a few weeks ago of another S-400 transferred from Kaliningrad to Crimea, even that they were removing some air defenses from Crimea to put them near Moscow to avoid drone attacks! It is a very important decision to leave some other area unprotected to transfer that plane or to leave the area unprotected and as you say and for the Ukrainians to amplify its effectiveness, in any case Ukraine wins✌️

Yeah it's really amazing they prefer to say the planes were destroyed/damaged through their own fault rather than admitting Ukraine is capable of fighting back and cause significant damages.
Which is worse: admitting that the defenders destroyed 2 critically important planes or that the invaders themselves did it through a massive screwup? NY❤AFU!!

The biggest loss is not the airplanes themselves, but the electronics ('over the horizon' radar, etc.) on board. Even if the Orcs find new airplanes, they can't replace the radar and communication stuff. Thanks for another great update, Anna!

Months ago, in presentations at conferences and Russian television, both Russian President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov referred to the conflict against Ukraine as a "war" (not "special military operation"). Why were they not given 10 years at a Siberian prison camp?

As the day has progressed and the facts have become clearer, the news has just kept getting better. Last night, if you remember, we thought it was one of fourteen operational planes. By the time Prof Gerdes got into it, this morning, it was thought to be one of nine. By this evening, when Starsky and Suchomimus had their facts and figures sorted, it turns out it was one of FIVE!!! 20% of their fleet wiped out in that one strike. Now they’re going to have to take one off duty somewhere else, where they presently don’t have an active war going on, but which of their neighbours can they really trust enough not to need to spy on them?
Oh they’re going to be smarting over this one! Forcing them to further open the door to potentially unfriendly bordering countries, in order to maintain their ill advised invasion of a peaceful neighbour leaves them vulnerable in a way they’ll be very self conscious about.
They also need to find a way to protect the replacement, or it will also go for a surprise swim.
I’ve been feeling like something big is about to happen for over a week. I’m wondering is this the start of it.
Time will tell, I guess.

Side note - the one that got hit on the tarmac last year was great (at that time, I believe there were only 4 more active), but this time, the crew was taken out as well, and that's a highly specialized crew in order to operate the equipment on it. Very difficult and expensive to replace, as much or more as the hardware itself. Additionally, even if they could bring another plane out to replace it, not so with regard the crew. Run out of pilots and crew, and it makes no difference how many planes they have.
Just wait until Ukraine has active F-16s :)
