  • Motorways are the transport arteries on which Britain depends. Through bad weather, accidents and repairs, it’s a constant battle to keep them moving. This series reveals the secret life of one of the UK’s busiest - the M6
    From the travellers who rely on it to the teams that work along it, the series features surprising stories and characters normally hidden from view. The repairmen who risk their lives as huge, fast and unpredictable vehicles thunder past, the irate local residents whose peace is disturbed by another set of night works and the police who mop up when things go wrong.
    The Motorway: Life In The Fast Lane provides a unique insight into the vast and fascinating life of UK's busiest M6.

    I can’t believe those lorries pretty much smashing into the cones. They will have completely ignored the X on the lane guidance telling them the lane is closed and then be completely oblivious to what is ahead of them in not seeing the cones until they almost hit them. Every single one of them should have been sent a ticket or be arrested for dangerous driving. No Lorry driver should be on the road like that, as they’re driving a huge thing that could wipe out families.

      In short conversation, it's simply easier to call both of them 'overtaking' because the long and short of it is, they've gone past someone else. In technicality, though, that is undertaking.

    I spent 3 years in Europe and I must say one thing I was impressed with was the state of the roads. Potholes repaired quickly, etc. Here in the US where I live we had a snow storm, which melted into the roads, then froze again, causing A LOT of huge potholes on regular and freeway roads. Numerous cars received flat tires or other damage, many wrecks caused by them. Yet it still took months and months to get them fixed, and even then it was a poor job that doesn't last long.. Now they are experimenting with a road surface that absorbs water and funnels it off to the side.

    That's horrendous. None of the work as an NHTO looks like fun and games, but for any person to physically witness body parts of a human on a road is mentally scarring. Nobody would expect to see that as part of their work.

      I really sadly came across a jumper who’d passed in July. I was in the front in the right hand lane just after it had occurred. Luckily, there was a passing ambulance travelling in front of me who was able to control the scene quickly. So, so sad and very horrific for all - the road was shut 36h. I really thank all those who work on the roads and sadly witness these poor victims. RIP

    I think today’s society is always in such a rush and needs to slow down!!!!!! I didn’t realize see this until 5 yrs ago when I became disabled. I noticed people risk there lives and others to get to there destination only a couple minutes earlier!!!!! For God’s sake people give yourself a few extra minutes so you don’t have to go 80 or 90 in a 70mph zone or 60-65 in a 55mph zone!!!! The more people that are in a hurry the greater chance of something bad happening!!!! It’s not an accident if you run someone off the road because you’re in a dang hurry. Enjoy your drive and ride and slow down!!!! Give yourself 5-15 minutes extra so you don’t have to act like a fool to get somewhere in time!!!! It’s not worth the risk!!!!!!

      one thing about driving there is you were never very far from a phone even before mobile phones. They had emergency phones on the motorway from the start, spaced every mile, and unlike equivalent systems in the US they cover all areas, urban and rural, universally, and they've continued to be maintained even in today's mobile phone dominated era.

    • @nigelbutterfield8533
      @nigelbutterfield8533 Před 4 lety +1

      @Lady Jupiter actually the national speed limit sign the white one with the black line did actually mean de-restricted, meaning there was no speed limit as such. If I remember right the national limit was introduced with the fuel crises in the seventies as it covered a large section of trunk roads, so in the early seventies it wasn't illegal to do 120, the beauty of the national speed limit means you don't need to go changing all the road signs, just make people aware of changes, bur many wouldn't know anyway, as you don't because the national speed limit means different vehicles on different roads
      Cars single lane, 60mph even if it's a single track, dual carriageway 70mph
      Lgv 40mph single track 50mph dual carriageway, trucks should be limited to 85kph, but the speed limit on a motorway is 60mph
      7.5ton, this may have changed as not fully up to date, was 50mph single lane 70 all others
      Two changes, have can do 50mph on single lane and 7.5 ton 60 on dual carriageway except in Scotland where it's 40mph on a single lane.
