I'm 28 years old and I've been struggling with anxiety for as long as I can remember (although back then I didn't know what it was). Photography has helped me along the way and because of this I decided to do my Masters thesis on treating anxiety with therapeutic photography. Thank you Bryce for sharing your story and founding The One Project, this will help me with my research and also personally. Big hug!

Just saw this video Bryce. I decided in 2013 that I wanted to be a professional photographer!
My life was going no where. I had gotten fired from a printing job, ended up in retail dead end job. I was very depressed. So, I decided to do photography, in all of my free time!
Photography helps sooth my depression. I do landscape and wildlife photography.
I am getting worse it seems as I get older. I might have to take some kind of drugs for my depression.
Anyway, at this moment, I am about to move to Colorado, to do landscape and wildlife photography! Wish me luck!

Thanks for sharing. Remember the importance so you pick up your camera and head outside when you're feeling the waves of depression start to hit.
I just sold everything and packed a few bags to Southeast Asia for a while to reinspire my photography and recommit to the practice. All the best in your new adventures, Mike! 📷

+PenButNoPencil-Photography trust me, I completely understand that, and this talk was a big step up for me in terms of public speaking. The techniques I developed and teach at The One Project helped me to very slowly become more comfortable in front of the camera, connecting to my authentic self and gaining more control over the depression and anxiety. It can be a long, hard process, but it's nothing less than life-changing. Keep your camera (and head) up 😊🏼💛📷👊🏼

I relate to this on every level. The greatest comfort to me wasn't words, it was seeing those photos, being an author of my own destiny and life. Poetry wrote created into visual. Without this powerful creative tool. A camera. We all have one even on our phones. So your next path, your new path is just a click away. Getting into photography is the best assistance for so many many issues. The exposure an image brings, is a conscious release. Thankyou for this expression.

Wow Bryce, you have literally just described where I am in my life right now. I am feeling rather lost, but use photography to find my way and trying to stay focused on my children and an end goal.
I am currently studying for my BaHons Degree in Photography and for my final year I am concentrating on myself and depression. In my dissertation I am researching and developing am argument on whether or not photography is the best form of therapy for those with depression like you and I. For my final two assignments I am developing my story, one focused on my depression, using surrealism to portray how I feel, daily. At the moment I am reading quite vulnerable and am struggling to work through everything, I have built up a persona for so long that it is hard for me to finally address the fight I continue to have with my Authentic self. I would really appreciate it if you would help me by possibly answering a few questions surrounding photographic therapy and how you feel it helps others live with depression.
    Thank you :)

Well done brother on switching on that light great talk man ♥ I walked away from my old life including professional photography in 2004 when I was in a state of depression. It took 4 yrs for me to get focused and shift some s..t so to speak but I did it :-) and although I never got back into photography when the dark clouds dispersed, after a further 6 yrs of living with a clear head with no darkness last year through my CZcams channel I started documenting my return via twice weekly videos on photography and to me all that love and passion for Photography came flooding back, so yes man I totally agree with you on the medium of photography to being a great help, well done man on everything you do - Sean

I think that there's a couple of problems,1 there's a lack of compassion, 2 there's a lack of people with listening skills, people don't know how to listen, people are to busy, people sometimes want to shut you up,they want to listen to them because they know what your problem is,they have the solution to your problems.

Good for you for finding your voice, Bryce. But I have to say that your One Project sounds an awful lot like Broken Light Collective, and all of the work that Danielle Hark has been doing for a few years now. You must have come across that photography and mental illness awareness community?

+megahloo Thank you! I am familiar with Danielle and the work she's doing, I came across it a few years back. This isn't the start of my journey with The One Project, it's been evolving over the last 5 or 6 years. :)
You're right that there are similarities between The One Project and Broken Light Collective, however our approaches are quite different as we provide a private community and also focus on education of therapeutic photography techniques (for both those affected and mental health professionals) through online courses, workshops, etc.
