  • What does coverage of Gaza tell us about the West?
A recent report into mainstream news coverage found Islamophobic and anti-Arab language was widely used in covering the events after October 7, and Israeli victims were described with emotive language 11 times more than Palestinian victims.
It also documented how pro-Palestinian voices were frequently vilified and treated with hostility during interviews. So why is this happening?
In our first episode of Season 3 of The Big Picture Podcast, we sit down with sociologist and writer Dr Randa Abdel Fattah, who speaks about her first-hand experience as an outspoken Palestinian academic.
She argues in her work that media narratives paint Palestinians and Arabs as ‘unreasonable, unrestrained and uncivilised’ as a way of maintaining a Western colonial order.

it's tragic, but i think part of the reason a Palestinian child's tragic death may not always be felt the way you would think is because for so long the rest of the world has seen Palestinians commit such atrocities such as strapping bombs onto their children, allowing them to throw Molotov cocktails against armies, etc. Wasn't it just a 15-year-old that stabbed an Israeli at a check point. Where were his parents? I guess they find comfort in believing they died martyrs. I'm not being sarcastic; I believe this ideology is the problem.

I'm talking about their children. Would you let yours go out and do these things or would you as an adult try and take some action? Would you allow terrorists to strap bombs to your child because you feel desperate? If you truly thought it would change things maybe you would do it your self, not allow the children. Hanan Ashwari a very well respected woman among the Palestinian people, years ago, begged the Palestinians to stop "killing our children". Referring to the suicide bombs. What parent does this or allows this. @@Moses_VII

Historians Cheikh Anta Diop (The African Origin of Civilization) and Ivan Van Sertima (African Presence in Early Asia) have written extensively on the subject of animosity toward the Africans and the Saricans expressed in extremely racist propaganda mythologized and imbued into European culture stretching from the Greeks antiquity to the period of the Moors.
The term Saracen is used throughout the "Doctrine of Discovery" but originates in Greek and Latin writings between the 5th and 15th centuries to refer to the people who lived in and near what was designated by the Romans as Arabia Petraea and Arabia Deserta. The term's meaning evolved during its history of usage. During the Early Middle Ages, the term came to be associated with the tribes of Arabia.

This conversation was right on. I have personally experienced my evolution of thinking on the media, ex: irrelavance of NYT as a trusted source. I had to verbally argue with me husband on every lie that they published till he cancelled & now I'm proud of him. But he is a white zombie who can compartmentalize the suffering of others while I cry & walk around at night thinking of people suffering, sleeping in the cold & being hungry & homeless.
I didn't understand & dismissed social media, thinking it was just about make-up or dances, but now I understand the democratization of all things even make-up & dances but especially news media. I now tune out the old sources like NPR, PBS ...and I've searched & searched till I found you & similar independent sources that wxplain history & movements. I won't go back & trust NPR, PBS anymore, especially when they employ ex-IDF.ers. I won't support politicians qho take $ from AIPAC.
This massacre of Palestians has rebirthed my mind to see the despiration of the empire to hold on to its waning dominence by any which way it can. THANK You!

The desensitation she is talking about is indeed worrying especially for me living in Germany as we are moving, again , towards Nazi Parties in Power . But i think its not just repeated Israeli atrocities, which has been "background noise" for my entire life , but also an effect of the "neoliberal" policies which completly dehumanised the poor parts of the populace and normalized political rethoric that puts company profits before human dignity . Looking at the disregard for workers rights laws and the fraudulent way healthcare companies acting to a deadly degree. While there is a lot of blame to be put on the Media in general i feel with the import of american shows like "next top model" and " Germany's Idol " we did make Sadism into Entertainment and not just accepted but a "normal" way of treating other people . The way people who watch Television talk and the way those who dont talk is striking . And of course , as i'm living in Germany , Alcohol abuse has increased semmingly in conjunction . Which seems to be a general trend among western nations : the more repression and cruelty is coming from the economy the more "functioning" Alcoholics are walking around both in the victims and also crucially in the perpetrators to the point that even a blatantly racist party like the AFD has many supporters that seem to live in a very strange alternative reality where their racism isn't racism at all but just "stating the truth" and they become really cagey if you tell them this or that seems to be racist .
And to my despair , as i lost one of my best friends to the bottle , i have no idea how to break through to this kind of people not just on the right but also on the left (who all support Israel in Germany ) . Strangely enough the only white people you can actually talk about reality in Germany are the open Neonazi types which is weird and terrifying.
    Enough rambling
    Keep up the good work

I would rather separate islamophobia from the palestinian case.
Islsmophobis is result of lack of civilised behaviour of muslims and this happens world over, not just in middle east or europe of asia, everywhere. Thisbis a malaise within islam and should have been corrected long back.
Palestinian people had majorly and disproportionately suffered for fault of larger islamic community when I had noticed they had the most sane and intelligent voices if all the arab states.
The other part is it is a big fall of israel or rather the zionists and the western power holders and that is very alarming to me, to me it gives a strong signal of lack of judgemental capability during most crucial periods of history unlike what I had experienced 30 years back and I think the increasing americanisation of western or rather eurasian polity with associated big money, big weapon, a resulting unipolar disbalanced world is major cause of this.
There is no racusm for sure.i being a brown person had never faced racism in europe, never faced discrimination in europe, the general public had been universally supportive and sympathetic towards palestinians and like me viewed netanyahu and israelu leadership , american control over european power structure as a tying down weight on them.
On the contrary I can unequivocally say brown and black people ,particularly brown muslims ,particularly the arabs from north africa amd middle east and the african people had been either due to traditional behaviours or total deliberate lack of understandimg and caring for the place where they move to inside europe, refusing to let go off their culture and religion and even going to the extent of insisting of spreading those in another persons place, absolutely ugly, grotesque, unnatural forba different part of the world, absolute non caring for feelings and cultures of the place which lets them in which is solely responsible for all the troubles they face. I can 100% steadfastly say that, no matter what israel does it will not change because thats a fact i had seen and that will not change with amy form of excuse. It is also the cause of any racial rebuttal anyone had faced in return.
I repeat I had never faced any kind of racial abuse or discrimination in europe despite having contributef absolutely nothing for their societies so far and for which i really feel bad many times but cannot do much due to circumstances.
My concern is with lavk of judgemental capability if west which was not there earlier. I al not sure why but I believe it is due to fall in standards of western human qualities and probably that has happened due to americanisation.
As for israel it really hurts
