That 1798 large eagle is amazing. So what, it is a details grade. There is not a single person here that wouldn’t love to have that in their collection. It’s now protected and you have a fantastic coin.
When I get my coins back if they come back details I am disappointed, but then I study the coin some more and try and see what the graders are looking at. I’ve only been collecting/stacking/hunting for 2 years so this is still a learning process for me. All in all some great coins for your collection, congrats!

Great video Speg ! I've always been very curious about these coin grading services . I've been collecting coins since 1964 . Although that seems like I've been collecting coins for a long time my personal coin collection is what I consider to be a very small collection but very special and nostalgic to me anyway . This is just my personal opinion for whatever that is worth but I really have grown to not like these coin grading services . I just feel that they , the grading companies , have taken a lot of the mystique and wonder out of the numismatic hobby for me . And by the way I have one of those 1853 one dollar gold coins just like you have that my father gave me . Anyway sorry for the long-winded post . I love your channel , am subscribed and give you constant thumbs ups . Keep up the great work my friend . And by the way for what you paid to have those coins graded you could have bought yourself a brand new uncirculated English Sovereign gold coin with the image of the new King on it and still had a few bucks left over .

About grading: Claims that grading companies favour clients who send large inventories of coins for grading are entirely speculative in my view. NGC and PCGS both have 'guarantee' as part of the registered name of the company. For them to favour the bullion dealers, who are already favoured by the US Mint for those 'Early Releases', 'First Releases', 'First Day Of Issue' etc coins in bulk, this would make a mockery of the ethics of offering a grading service guarantee. It would be extremely unfair to individuals wanting to use the same service. It would make no sense for a business to discourage potential clients(dollars) in this manner.
Lastly: these companies make their money grading coins; not trading coins. They are more likely to give a discount to bulk orders; just like any other business.
Great subject to bring up, Speg. It was time to clear the air on that.

Thanks for sharing. - this was great! I will tell you your opinions are spot on. I think they are a better deal if you submit with a coin show. I also think that taking coins to a dealer to submit for you with their larger order is also a good way to go. Finally, since we live in FL (not everyone is that lucky) we can drive them and save on the shipping. i am also in the tampa area and they are in Sarasota. Gas could be a wash…. You picked great coins to submit. BUT, if you have more modern coins or coins you plan on keeping and not selling them ICG is a good way to go. Coin Guy likes them as well. They were started by some former NGC graders about 25 years ago. They do a great job and validate them and protect them the same as all the other services - for half the price. Also, they do not have pricing or price guides. This is nice since they have no reason to control populations. NGC is my favorite to collect and buy. Thanks again

Hi Jim i must say i was disappointed with your disparaging remarks about your coin grading skills. No one is born with these skills. Some are born with the aptitude to remember details and have excellent visual acuity but most people (even our current experts) had to study and learn coin grading from the bottom up. This takes time and hands on the coins. There is no reason you could not learn how to grade coins subjectively and accurately with just a few hours of reading and research. Sheldon scale graphic (pictures of grade scale condition AG-MS70) coin scales of the coin you"d like to grade help a lot when just starting out. You will quickly learn the visual grades most commonly found for each coin you study within a few numerical positions. As I conclude id also like to say that a coin cannot truly be graded from a picture or a video. Luster, strike and eye appeal can only be evaluated in person with coin in hand. A well educated guess can be made from pictures or videos but really no true coin expert would stand behind a grade of a coin in a picture. So keep going keep learning and you someday will be the best coin grader ever!

The Scratch Marks on the 1798 Draped Bust are consistent with silver reduction by the mint. The plug was probably too heavy. The rake like deep marks are typical of 1794 - 1803 coins weight reduction I've seen many. The 1804s were made in 1836 for a diplomatic mission for kings like Oman & Thailand. Big book on that journey.

NGC used to put the "improperly cleaned" designation on the holder. So did that mean there was such a thing as proper cleaning? I took it to mean if they cleaned it, "conserved it", it was acceptable. But if you or anyone else altered the surface in any way, it was a no no. I have a few coins I would like to have authenticated but I dread getting the devastating "cleaned" designation!

I saw wear ( from 5 o'clock to 8 o'clock) on the reverse that had me at 58-61 making me think it may have circulated. No one gives 60s anymore, you'll either be rounded up or rounded down. Very fun and informative show. The outcome of the cleaned $20 gold coin is a bit disturbing. I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't have noticed those scratches if they were on the coin before you sent it in. It's unsettling to think that they may have made the condition worse by "conserving" it. Looks like taking photos of your coins before sending them off is a really good idea. Cheers.

That 1908 NM MS 65+ St Gaudens is really nice! Considering there are only 7800 graded higher with none graded above MS 68. You may consider a crack out and regrade since the plus grade enforces the possible slider to MS66. You may get a more generous grader on the next submission. The graders at ngc & pcgs are not told where a coin comes from whether it be a bullion dealer or an individual, this information is purposefully withheld so that graders can be as unbiased as possible during the grading process. That being said, preferential treatment is obviously a problem in grading and probably has more to do with the amount of $$$ involved.

Love that 1908 St. Gaudens. Even though a Christian, I like the coin WITHOUT motto as it is a bit simpler.

It makes it even look like more of a medal but I do prefer the motto as I like the completeness of it.

The reason why Teddy Roosevelt did not want the motto on, Money could be used for immoral things. Almost reminds me of Roman Brothel tokens, and the story behind it, or the history. Basically the Emperor was seen as a god. The Cult of The Emperor. Tiberius did not want coins with the image of the emperor to be used for brothels. Do not know how true it is, but a cool take on history
