      Beautiful was my jam in high school. I had low self esteem due to comparing myself to more popular girls & how pretty they were. As a person who supports LBGTQ rights I am happy this song is a Queer anthem.

      gotta say, i didn't like Born This Way that much at first (the song itself, not the message behind it), but it grew on me quickly. it has an overwhelmingly positive message for self-acceptance and the fact that it's backed up by a joyful dance-pop sound is even better.

      "Spring Day" by BTS.. (in advance, BTS could never openly admit this tho)
      since they could not just simply critize the korean government openly for their behaviour for letting 304 people (including 250 students) die, they made this song which was initially made about a never-ending longing and the pain of losing someone/a friend.. but the MV is referencing the movie "Snowpiercer" and the book "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas", which are about oppression and willful blindness, including a lot of references to the incident..

      @@Laramaria2 The video: I was thinking that, for intending to communicate an empowering message of self-acceptance, It struck me as inappropriate that Gaga was being hypersexual. Seems like Gaga has a truly kind heart - so whose idea was it to distract from the message all this weird genital touching and such

    What about Earth Song by Michael Jackson? He showed how much damage humans done to this world and it always devastated him to see people, animals and children suffering. In fact he written a few songs that tackled serious issues like They Really Don’t Care About Us, We Are The World, Heal The World, Black Or White and HIStory.

      I think Because Of You or Piece By Piece would be a better for Kelly in this kind of list. Stronger is a kind of basic recovering from a break up type of song. Because Of You and Piece By Piece are songs about her rough home life and not wanting to be like her dad, which is a more serious issue many can relate to.

    One song that grabs my heart is Katy Perry's "your a firework". I was often bullied growing up and that song gives me courage to face anything. Her, Lady Gaga, Pink and Christina Aguilera: they have changed how we see the world, and those we see as "different". We need more powerful women in our world like that.

    When i was younger i was really depressed and hated myself for being disabled my mother would put on born this way by lady gaga to make me feel better it worked in the end now even after 11 yrs later i still have that song in my life constantly playing on my playlist

      I lived in Scranton in the 90s and the song stayed fairly popular for the early part of that decade, leading to the naming a homeless outreach called "Operation Think Twice" during a particular cold winter in early 1994 (the all time record low temperature was set then.)

    Michael Jackson tackled serious issues on his 1991 album, Dangerous, and his 1995 album, HIStory, and they're totally underrated. Songs like "Black or White," "Heal The World," "Gone Too Soon," "Dangerous," "Jam," "They Don't Care About Us," "Earth Song," "Little Susie," and "Tabloid Junkie."

    Dancing with the devil by Demi Lovato tackling her own struggles and experience with drug addiction was so powerful and moving and beautifully harrowing. It is also a stunning vocal but when I watched the video it honestly changed my life

    When I was a teenager, I was having a hard time in high school. Music helped me a lot especially songs like Born This Way by Gaga, Firework by Katy Perry, and We R Who We R by Kesha. I don’t think I would have made it through without those songs.

      Around a decade ago I had my car, a VW New Beetle, in the North Carolina Pride parade. Got stuck in a delay for a bit next to the religious protestors just as that song came on so I turned the volume up.

    The fact that Papa Don't Preach by Madonna was not even given an honorable mention is quite shocking considering it tackled the topic of teen pregnancy and abortion during the 1980s Reagan era.

    I'm surprised there aren't any MJ songs on this list, because he wrote a lot with some really deep messages. And there's also One More Light by Linkin Park, which was the last song written before Chester Bennington took his own life, and touches on the themes of mental illness and being there to help those that are in need

    What this list needs is to include some of Demi Lovato's biggest emotional songs!! Dancing With The Devil, Sober, Confident, Anyone, Skyscraper covered a lot on the topics of not only the importance of mental health, but the struggles of drinking addiction as well!! You can hear every ounce of real emotion in her voice when she sings, which adds a realness to her music, and that's very important to highlight!!!

    GaGa and Pink own this category in PoP music but there are just as hard hitting message songs in American Country Singers. Going back as far as 1975 when Loretta Lynn released 'The Pill' which is about birth control.

    Midnight Oils "Beds Are Burning" tackles the apathy of white Australia to the Stolen Generation, and Yothu Yindis Treaty discusses the lack of recognition of Aboriginal land rights which was promised by Bob Hawke (Aussie PM) in 1988. Very important songs for Australians.

    "Runaway Train"!!!! The first video shows faces of missing, kidnapped or runaway children... so many faces were found that they had to re-shoot the video!!!
