Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a CZcams video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

Kent was traditionally the hop growing area of England, and whole families would take themselves there for their summer holidays to enjoy the sun and earn some money picking hops in the fields. Many of them were factory workers and presumably did not get paid while their factories were closed for summer break.

Another local village is having a bear festival. In May the Wool Sack races are held in Malmesbury. Fun races with a large 4 x 4 ft sack filled with sheared wool fleas on your back. Same with the Cheltenham cheese rolling races down Coopers Hill in May. You have keep your eyes open to find these things and when.

If you go to an afternoon session entry is free and it's not too crowded, it's on a field and there are at least some tables and chairs provided. They do beer, cider and wine, plus there's a great cheese counter and a range of other food. You could easily do a day at that and a day sightseeing and punting.

You do look like you got nice and merry which is the way to be!
Tell you a little story about hops....I was once travelling on the train back from Canterbury with some American Tourists adjacent to me, talking about how Faversham is full of hop fields for the local beer and how its famous for it... Then just passing a hop field his wife looks out the window and says "Are they what you're talking about?" and he replied "Nah, they're Grapes!".... One of the terms that used to be quite regional, was the way kids would refer to playing truant from school - 'bunking off', 'skiving', 'wagging it' and more. In London - especially South and East London, it would be referred to as 'hopping it'.
It was a term that came from the tradition of poorer families heading to Kent, where they would combine hop picking with a family 'holiday'. - a couple of weeks away from the smoke and bustle, families staying on farms, sleeping in barns or tents. Kids getting to see their first cow etc. - a couple of weeks that families really looked forward to, and some old folk still remember fondly. - very cute outfit, by the way

You looked like you had a great time there. My cities beer fest in Peterborough , lasts a week! Hundreds of different beers ciders and anything else these days. My friend who lived in Kuwait for 20 years always made it home for it no matter what. Its become a huge event here as its where friends meet up who dont see each other for years and have aa cheeky sip and watch some bands. Theres even a family day

My father was born in Ramsgate in 1928 and he had old sepia photographs of his grandmother and aunts sitting eating sandwiches in a hop field.. Most of my father's family worked picking hops and apples..

Sounds like they were running "Open Mic" sessions which can lead to a very eclectic mix of sounds, which always sounds better after the 5th pint and you join in. Where I live (Essex) we have Beer & Sausage festivals quite often, only about an hours drive from you.

I was waiting for this video. My sister lives in Faversham and figured you would go one day. She invited me to come but I gave it a miss. Gutted I missed seeing you staggering around in your crown. The hangover must have been a doozy. A boozy doozy.
