    In this video we’re taking a train from Newcastle upon Tyne to Durham - a historic pearl known for heritage attractions, hidden gems and gorgeous countryside breaks! We started with exploring the most stunning Cathedral (featured in Harry Potter!), strolled through winding cobbled streets and had a few fun breaks, including the cutest tea room and rowing the boat on the river.

      Awesome! Welcome aboard! We had heard reviews that the north of England was beautiful and the people were lovely, but really Newcastle as well as Durham exceeded our expectations! So much so that we are really considering settling in the north in the future (when we can afford it 😂).
      Thanks for watching and for your compliments - it really means a lot to us :) And if you have any suggestions for videos let us know too! We would love to go to the place you want YOU to see the most ❤️

      Glad your having a great time in the North East. As someone who lives in the North East, I love to see folk visiting where we live. I think we're among the friendliest and welcoming people, especially to folk from outside the area, as were extremely proud of our area and want you to enjoy like we do. In a way it's quite lucky that the main tourist route is York to Edinburgh, as it's all a bit more rewarding to find that Durham is very much worth visiting. The cathedral is an architecrual masterpiece (I've yet to visit a more impressive one), and the site has historical significance too. Hope you get to visit the nice villages, castles and beaches in north Northumberland too at some point - the most unspoilt area of England.

    • @JayandKarolina
      @JayandKarolina  Před 14 dny

      We totally agree! We had felt in Durham like we were the characters of the medieval movie :) Literally not long ago we've visited York and it's equally beautiful but way more commercialised resulting in tonnes of tourists, so actually it loses its charm a bit.
      And talking about the Cathedrals: Durham Cathedral was absolutely our favourite and we were truly happy to pay the fee and go to the top of the tower 🏰❤️ Whereas, we didn't even enter York Minster because the entrance fee + the viewpoint was 25 GBP/person which we found too pricey.
      It's a bit sad that you need to be mindful of the costs when exploring the city but I guess every county has its own rules.

    I'm born and bred in Durham City 😊 Durham Cathedral is amazing, especially at Christmas! They do a tree lighting service which is so beautiful, especially when the choir sings by candlelight in the darkness.
    Also, its not just Harry Potter that was filmed in the Cathedral, Marvels Avengers Infinity War was too! Im sure there have been a few other films filmed here but the most recent 'big' film would be the Avengers film 😊

    Durham is a lovely little place. The cathedral has a lot more that you missed because of the service. You can stay in the castle when the students are not there, although it is basic student accommodation. The Oriental museum is worth a visit, it is very small as far as museums go but it packs in a lot of quality rather than quantity. There is another small museum on the palace green between the castle and cathedral which has a couple of nice pieces but small. The walk along the river has some lovely views of the cathedral. If you want to walk further afield, then upstream from the river will take you to Shincliffe and Butterby wood which has an incredible display of wildflowers in early June.
    If you walk downstream passed the prison, it will take you to Finchale Priory. Slightly south in the city, is Observatory Hill which offers great views of the Cathedral. Behind the station is Wharton Park which also offers great views of the city. At the university library on South Road you'll find a geological map of the UK which is interest for rockhound nerds like me. On Church Street you will find one of the creepiest children's parks in the UK, built on top of a graveyard. If you hit on the right day, you can visit inside Durham town hall which is a lovely little space. A short bus ride away is Ushaw.

    If you want to see a Cathedral, go to York Minster, the largest & most spectacular in northern Europe. Durham is a City because of the Cathedral. In the old days having a Cathedral made the place a City, not just a town. Durham Cathedral is 1000 years old. Some towns have been made cities in modern times have had their main church elevated to Cathedral status, though not all have done this. A Cathedral is the Church of a Bishop, in Durham it was a Prince Bishop. He had the right to raise an army to defend the north of England against the Scots, who were often at war with the English. Only 2 Cities have Archbishops, who are in charge of all the others, these are Canturbury, because London was enemy territory when the Church was first set up in England, the other was York, who was Archbishop for the northern part of England. This was designated by Pope Gregory in 598 AD, when he sent Augustine to convert the English, because York had been the Capital of the Roman Province of northern Britannia in ancient days. This is another reason why York has such a large Cathedral, Minster being an old English word for an important church, related to the word Monastery.

      @@alanbrooke5006 Yes I know Durham Cathedral is great. I did my Degree at Cuthbert's Durham University. It has Norman power & grandeur, but York Minster is more spectacular in its Gothic splendor, & it is the head church of northern England, having the only Metropolitan Archbishop except for Canterbury, as designated by Pope Gregory when he sent Augustine to Britain in 598AD. The Archbishop of Canterbury was meant for London, but that city was barred to him at that time, so they had to settle on Canterbury, the lead town of the Kent King.

      Durham cathedral is the most spectacular Romanesque building surviving in Western Europe, even the very early Gothic additions hardly detract from its solid majesty.
      York with its Gothic technology was re-built two centuries later, and the amazing building it is, it still competes with many dozens as the greatest Gothic cathedral.
