    Today is my birthday. Hit the damn 👍🏻 for my birthday if you appreciate Sean and Cathy’s content. 🤘🏻🎸❤️‍🔥🥳🎂🎁🎉🎊🧁
    Another fine job! Fun to watch you work. The kit turned out great, but it could use different pickups for sure. Sometimes Epiphone pickups are awesome, but guess these weren’t so special.
    Did I hear you say that Fender sent you a guitar?! Congrats!! You know, maybe that’s a good thing. If they’re open to having you tear apart a Fender, then they’re clearly looking for honest feedback. Gotta respect that. You have said a million times that it hurts you to think Fender and Squire guitars are crappy and can’t compete with all these budget brands as of late. Well, maybe Fender is being open to hearing your feedback and values your opinion so they can make improvements - at least that’s what I hope their goal is. They have a long history and tons of longtime customers are complaining of QC issues regularly. Maybe Fender is ready to for a legit tear down so they can build themselves back up. But anyway, for real, congrats on getting their attention - it’s an honor to be offered a free guitar to tear down, and it may end up helping loads of guitar players if Fender really implements any changes/improvements you suggest.
    And stop parking your bike by the front door like that or else Cathy might hock it to get cash for her hobbies! 😂😂😂

    My friend, Grover tuners are manufactured in South Korea, Taiwan, and yes, their G2 model is made in China. They are not “fake”, just cheap. IDK about Firefly, IYV, or anyone else, but the G2 tuners are definitely licensed by Epiphone.

    As a long time wood touch up/spot finisher, for the glue spots on the neck, I would try a Mohawk, wood touch up pen. Always start lighter in color than you think you need. I also have many colors of powder that can be custom blended , but that is quite a bit more involved. Keep on rockin'.

    • @markpell8979
      @markpell8979 Před měsícem

      Yes, lacquer pens are awesome secret weapons for finishing touch-ups! You can even cover flaws in wood grain/figure before final overcoats. Furniture finishers use this technique often, sometimes combined with spray airbrushing using stain or tinted lacquer. If you use 'em right, nail polishes with brush applicators work pretty well for touchups and spot repairs too and they come in every possible color, and can be mixed. These usually have an acetone solvent. When you use any of these tricks just be sure the solvents are compatible. Test when in doubt.

    I have those same pick-ups in a Glarry I just purchased. The only thing I have figured out is the 10 and 10.4 represent the center spacing between pole pieces in mm. This is to match string spacing with 10.4 mm at bridge and 10 mm at neck. Other than that no one seems to know anything about them. Keep up the good work because your channel has helped me restore my 1981 Fender Bullet. Ivory with white metal pick guard. Plays like a 2000 dollar guitar. Thanks.

    Great job Sean! The root beer color finish looks awesome. I come to understand that actual true original Grover tuners have a beveled flare on the end under the thumb key and the font, or lettering is smaller and closer together than the cheaper knockoffs. There also may be a slight difference in the height of the tuner once installed on the headstock. I am just learning myself, and I really enjoy your videos. Take care and God bless.

  • @dreibel
    @dreibel Před měsícem +1

    I find with much of the cheaper Epis that the neck pickups are way too muddy - it's when you get to the more deluxe and signature models where the pickups are alright. I have a 2002 Epiphone 50th Anniversary Les Paul model that came with Gibson pickups and hardware stock, and it's killer. That new Epiphone Green/Moore/Hammett signature model has really nice pickups, particularly the neck.
    That guitar kit looks great. I'd drop in a set of Cathy's pickups, open face with zebra bobbins.

  • @esmfotoz
    @esmfotoz Před měsícem +1

    Yeah, the middle and neck sound a little muddy but that can be played around with no problem. Gain, tone, etc., and it will sound pretty good. But, yeah, I think with all that work I'd put in some Seymour Duncans (Pearly Gates) or maybe some regular generic PAFs. Nice work, Sean. Wood looks great!

    • @markpell8979
      @markpell8979 Před měsícem

      @jazzdrumguy5044, they usually scrape the binding/purfling at the factory because in the long run over a number of guitars it takes less time so is more profitable. At the larger factories they have specialized people that just scrape bindings all day so they get damn good at it. On individual projects you can do a good job with tape but there is an art to that too and it does take a lot of time to do it right. Good tape ain't cheap either. You can get good results either way but it's nearly impossible to keep stain from leaking under the edge of your tape somewhere no matter how well you think you stuck it down. Speaking from a lifetime as a woodworker here. So how do you fix that when it happens? Scrape it off with a single-edge razor blade.

    Sean, I was thinking, which is a dangerous place to be, you have made just about every iteration of a guitar that you can make other than 'the log' as far as I know, but one I haven't seen yet is a double neck 12/6 like the Gibson that Page plays on Stairway to Heaven. I saw one on Amazon, a company named Tario was making that they sell for 359.00. Now I know that 359.00 is about 159.00 over your usual max budget for a guitar but double necks are hard to come by unless you want to buy a used Epiphone version of the Gibson in that real cool SG style or the Real Gibson for 6500.00. Maybe you might take a flier on one and show us if they are any good for 359.00, that is unless you want to build one from scratch which I don't think you can do for 359.00. Shoot the wood alone since you would have to use a stout wood like Alder or Mahogany would cost over 100.00 and that is before you get to 2 necks but hey, if you want to do it in either way, I think a lot of the membership would love to see it and maybe would buy it from you. I know that you put a set of Cathy's pickups in it and real Grovers and mahogany set necks and you could easily get your money out of it on eBay or even Reverb. Yeah, I wrote a book. lol That's it. I Hope to catch up with you guys Saturday night. I have some family stuff earlier in the day and hopefully I get back in time to log in for 'Hangin'

    I bought a tailpiece and ABR-1 for the LPS2 It had a lightning bar tail piece and no bridge at at. The intonation was awful. I ordered a tailpiece and an ABR1 for it and it was stamped Wilkinson on both but you could see where it was attempted to remove the stamping. I ordered it from Guitar Center for the guitar specifically. But it used graphite and you could see it clear as day, my wife could. Wiped it off and you couldn’t see it . But you could feel something. Anyway we used Gibsons instructions and put them on and restrung it with Billy Gibbons 7s because I knew I was giving it to her and they would be OK until her fingers get stronger. But it intonated well. Her guitar teacher said that it needs a $50 setup. I told what I had done already. The neck is dead nuts and no bad frets. The best he could come up with was it sounds like a Sitar. I said until her hands get stronger the 7s stay. He was like, oh 7s. I laughed. I told him, nice try and he laughed and texted me and said his boss always does that. I told him I am fine with a string change to 9-42s when she is ready. And I have him looking for a hull to put my Cathybuckers in. Seems like a good kid, but Ernie Ws is going to have to win my trust. It is 24.75 and not a thing wrong with it except my hands are too big for the neck. lol.

    I bought one of these kits from a company I won't name (nor recommend, they are bad) for about the same price. I actually bought 2 from them because I cracked the first one in half. (It fell in the bathroom)
    The binding on that one is MUCH better. However, I recently had a change of heart towards the one that is not cracked and I pulled out the expensive SD 78's and put them into another partscaster I have, and ordered some strange "brown sound" polished humbuckers from Guitar Fetish (The set was like, $40) and am waiting for those to come in. I had 4 CTS Push/Pull knobs lying around that are brand spankin' new, so I am going to load one in with a nice re-wire job using some Gavitt wire, and a better 3-way switch....I hope it sounds as good as I think it will.

    There was a saying going around among tech reviewers that went "cheap stuff is getting good and good stuff is getting cheap." Apple and Samsung heard that saying and raised their prices. Gibson, Fender and the other big manufacturers must be following the same playbook. Every factory from Indiana to Indonesia has a CNC machine and they all work the same no matter where on earth they are.

      @glenndavis479, that's a good point a lot of people are not aware of. By setting the overall pickup height from side to side and adjusting the individual pole screws for the best sound and balance, it's basically like you're tuning an antenna for best reception. Most folks already have decent pickups but just don't know it.

    The 3 ply binding is called purfiling. I found the term while looking for regular binding.

    Hi Sean, really nice kit, when you get the chance of some other dye, could you try a silverfox colour finish please. Cheers.

    Thats okoume, sometimes It looks really really close to african mahogany... sometimes they use peach blossom too. And since china only gets khaya from congo it's easier to identify due to the black mineral streaks. Price it's good though. I bought an all khaya sg kit (4 pieces in total with no hardware for 300 bucks). But it sounds like the real deal.

    I thought the stain on the binding made it looked good. Aged even. Personal preference I'd left it.

    Agree. I prefer clean especially with Fender guitars and amps (twins). And a Les Paul through a VOX…………tasty.

    Excellent video today. Two scars up. I was looking on Ebay before the video even finished. I wish you would have swapped in the N10 pickup to see if it was better. Keep it up. This was a nice break from cheap guitar reviews.

    The fake-fake one (if you didn't open the bag and switch with another one of the other 5) is the LOW-E string one.
