I liked the addition of the 'under the radar' section. It made a good point about good cars that aren't as popular.
My family has all Hondas now. My dad had a 2008 Honda Pilot that lasted quite well until he bought a 2019 Honda Pilot. The 2008 Pilot is now safely in my uncle's care and has take him and his wife from PA to GA multiple times. It's still going. I started with a 2016 Honda Pilot that was a lease and I loved it so much when my lease was almost up I upgraded again to a 2017 Pilot. I went down to FL with that Pilot and ended up with a 2019 Pilot that I now own. I haven't had any issues with my car nor has my dad had any with his. I've driven to FL multiple times and I love my car. My brother and daughter have Honda CRVs. We are truly the house of Honda. I don't see myself in anything else at this time.
I don't care about options, quietness. I'm interested in reliability.
Let's face it, the Japanese rule and America as great a country as it is, sucks at making cars.
Yeah when cars are this ridiculously priced, you rather just have something that will go 300k plus
4Runner. All day every day. It doesn't have all the fancy gadgets, but it's still made entirely in Japan and is extremely reliable. Mine has almost 170,000 miles with ZERO repairs and still runs and drives like a new one.
you never know true reliability in the first year, it takes a lot of units out in use over a multi year period of time before you get an understanding of popular problems of a certain make/model/year of any vehicle.
@@jelambertson Yeah? Tell that to my 2013 nissan altima that the rear control arms rotted and fell off of with less than 50k miles.
I like the Subaru Outback and Forester. Reasonably priced, reliable, good fuel economy.
Just bought a 2021 Telluride Night Fall Edition and love it. It’s beautiful inside and out. The tech in it is amazing! Put in sport mode and it feels like you’re in a high powered sports sedan! Awesome ride! The Telluride is so popular In some places there’s 4-7 month waiting period for it
I fell in love with the Telluride when I saw it on the road for the first time ever. But it’s too much of a car for me alone, it’s more like a family car and that price is out of my range 😭😭 but I still love it!
My brother has one and he agrees with you.
Hyundai
Kia
& Mazda have been kicking butt the past few years!
So has Nissan

@@lowlifeangler owned a Mazda for 10 years. In that 10 years, the only thing that needed to be replaced, besides wear items, was a water pump. Had to get rid of it due to frame rust. Bought another Mazda. Going on four years and have had no issues so far. Drives and handles nicely. Comfortable. I like Mazda's.
@@fretbrner mazda are good car , some model from few year ago gave some problems that were fixed..now they are pretty , reliable and strong cars.
Surprised not to see the Kia Seltos somewhere on the "under the radar" section. Fantastic small SUV with great mileage, and unlike the Kona which is more like a hatchback than an SUV, it has great ground clearance, suspension, and makes fantastic use of its interior space. It feels way bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. Absolutely loving mine so far!
Avoid SUVs from Jaguar and Land Rover. They break down all the time.
That's what I hear, something about them being owned by another company... though reports of the new Land Rover Defender seems overwhelmingly positive, but only time will tell..
TR13DGE 716 you never know until after about 3-4 years
Jaguar doesn't surprise me. But Land Rover? Bummer. I actually like the looks of a couple they make. What breaks on them and why don't they address the problem if it's known?
@@pathfinderLXXIV I believe one of the most brought up issues is their air suspension and electronics like memory seat settings... never owned one personally, so I couldn't say for sure. They just have a general report of some kind of failure or something falling apart. Whereas, something like a Toyota will have no issues given its been the same time.
Never had a problem with mine
I ordered a 2020 Kia Telluride highest trim. I can't wait. Thanks for your video it made me feel better buying it.
Nice! Hope u dont have to wait too long. 😬
@@alexivan8615 It was pushed back because of the pandemic.
Thats what i imagined. .hope it wont be too long b4 ur enjoying it. I especially like the interior grab handles and gear selector over the pallisade although they both have gorgeous exteriors. Have u seen the new gv80? Holy dang lol
Bought a new kia forte in 2014, its a 6speed, driven hard daily, zero issues just oil changes and brakes, been very reliable
@@bennyb6071 only sucky thing is no vented seats in the manual :( otherwise id b lookin at it too
Buddy your are the best doing reviews .!!!. I love the way than you exposed the car .. the pros and cons of the each model, so easy ti understand and give a chance to do my own research ..etc etc. Thanh you so much .!!!😉😉
This is a great review, Dave. I have to agree with all of these makes and models you've mentioned. The thing that truly puzzles me is HOW Honda and Nissan engineers have truly dropped the ball with the continually devolving reliability of these two brands when years ago, they were among the best. What a shame, both for the consumers and the legacy of these two brands. smh...
Nissan: JATCO CVTs.
Honda: I don't even know anymore.
@@barondystopia, I thought the CVTs were Aisin but will agree that the CVT is Nissan's/Infiniti's downfall.
@@PrinzII It's an issue if a large majority of your cars are equipped with something like that. Toyota makes them reliable AF, though. But the 2019 Corolla had some transmission issues. Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Nissan/Infiniti are huge users of CVT. I don't think Subaru and Mitsubishi have problems like Nissan/Infiniti, though. But the fact that they rely heavily on that without passing on the savings to the consumer is pretty bad. (CVT is supposedly cheaper to manufacture. But the problems are expensive to fix!)
Plus, many hybrids have CVTs.
The Kia Telluride & Ford Edge Is Best Choice For Me
Kona available from 20-45 thousand? Thats quite the range
The electric kona is the expensive 1
curious if you feel the same about the Palisade that you feel about the Telluride...? thanks!
Both are great, Palisade = Sean Connery in a Tux,. Telluride = Clint Eastwood in a hat and poncho. Under the skin they are Exactly the same. (Hyundai)
In 2008 Kia Engineering died and got dissolved into the Hyundai group.
seems like honda isnt paying consumer report fees lol
True
Totally agree! Of course the Honda/Acura will be better than the Ford/Buick/domestic alternative
I don't know. I personally know some Honda owners who would tell you that their cars just aren't what they used to be. Toyota is still the gold standard. I'd still take a Honda over a Ford or Buick, though.
As I had stated to another imbecile above - Wow - stupid much? Try accusing them in public of what you've said. Lawyer up, skippy!
@@eskieman3948 ,you are a sheep that just follows what others say ,educate you're self and form you're own opinions
Strongly Avoid : RAV4.
Consider: CX5, Telluride, Atlas.
Plus Consumer Reports is not qualfied to be considered. Edmunds is better.
The new normal: Anyone that disagrees with their own personal opinion: "not qualified!!!". Anyone that agrees with their own person opinion: "Better!!!".
"Plus Consumer Reports is not qualfied (sp) to be considered". You're funny. Their automotive testing teams are composed of AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS, NOT JOURNALISTS. The reliability information of the cars that they test? It comes from the bi-annual surveys sent to CU subscribers (100k+) on all consumer goods, including automotive.
The ignorance is strong in this one.....
@@eskieman3948 ,they are highly influenced by $$$$$$,moron
Chris Berry
Are you saying Consumer Reports is influenced by the money? How? They don’t take ad dollars nor are they influenced by the OEMs marketing campaigns. You could t be further from the truth. Hope you are thinking the other way around.
Evidently CR gave your ride a poor rating. Don’t think you have a clue how CR evaluates cars.
The Telluride is probably the best SUV to come out lately.
Wait till the new kia sorento comes out, they outdid themselves, or the genesis gv80 which is incredible
That's what happens when you hire German engineers
@Bob Smithereens I disagree. Korean cars in the last 10+ years have been very reliable. That's what happens when you combine German engineering and reliable cars together. It's not like we're talking about the 90s here. I know this from personal experience with me owning a 2012 Optima Hybrid, fully loaded.
Wait until you sell it...
@@periodt4651 Unlike most people, I keep my vehicles for at least 5-7 years. My ROI on my current vehicle has been at least 5-6x as well for what I originally bought it for.
The Kia Seltos is another alternative to the HR-V. Doesn't ride as nicely as my wife's 2018 Crosstrek, but I find the seats a little more comfortable and it has plenty of cargo area. Rides similarly to what my Soul did, perhaps a little smoother. The FWD version (available only in the S Trim) surpasses most competition in terms of gas mileage rating. Haven't had mine long enough to see how close it gets to the rating though.
I own the Hyundai Kona for in-city daily use for almost 2 years. My review for this so far is Excellent in energy efficiency, quiet, quite spacious, great safety options and incomparable costumer service.
My husband owned the Ford Fusion for 6 years then traded with the Mazda CX-5. No regret!!!
Mazda feels more sturdy than Kona because it’s a bigger car I think.
We both are big fans of Hyundai and Mazda.
I really think Subaru's only represent good value at the lower trim levels. Once you start piling on the options and the price starts rising there are far more compelling choices available out there.
Interesting.
Scotty Kilmer when he sees Honda’s on this list 👁👄👁
Me when I see people use apostrophes to make nouns plural. 🤦♂️ Hondas
This is way more informative than I expected. Good stuff
Is the a Hyundai / Kia commercial?
Japanese make not particularly good. All suv now average ok.
I voted with my wallet after looking at all the options. We have a Telluride SX-Prestige on order. Quite frankly - the only thing I don’t like about the Telluride is the wait to get what you want. The biggest disappointment for us was the new Ford Explorer. Loved the handling - but the interior had the worst interior quality and control feel of all we looked at...at any price point.
I would appreciate this being based on your opinion from your reviews vs having you speak to Consumer Reports. Thanks for all your hard work Dave!
curious , no jeep mention ? wish I knew where the grand Cherokee fit in. ~. JDS/CT
"Consumer Reports" is the top choice to avoid, not the Honda.
I liked the old consumer reports "frequency of repair" ratings.
But that is when they had credibility.
I have a 19 Honda HRV and hate it. Never again....
mark oldendorf Why do you say CRs lacks credibility? That's what they are supposed to be all about! How have they changed?
@@daviddoyle543 Should have bought a CR-V. I bought a 2019 and love it.
After owning a 2018 Expedition Max Limited for two years I wouldn't buy another one. The unreliable engine was a huge disappointment. Never used for towing but had cam phasers go bad multiple times (always took multiple weeks to get replacement parts) and had a high pressure fuel pump that was missing a bolt and after 15k miles the second bolt failed. Ford service was a bright spot but I'd rather not have to get if fixed as often. I'd stick with a Suburban, Yukon XL, or Sequoia if you want something reliable and something that will hold its resale value. Expedition has more passenger room but its not worth all the hassle.
Hyundai is killing it!!!!!!!!
I totally agree with you. Please do not forget her cousin KIA!
Ugh
So is McDonald’s.
Ha lol
KIA = Kill In Action
Thank you for actually looking at consumer reports and reviews and reliability.!! It's the number one thing people care about but most reviewers don't even look at it haha. This was a very helpful video thank you!!
FEEDBACK: “under the radar alternative”. Nice! A second alternative! Thank you. A perspective unique to your channel. Now just don’t drown anymore 4runners and we’ll be good.
Reason not to buy Kia telluride. Dealers are still selling over msrp. Wait a couple years for discounts to kick in. Would have already happened if production didn’t slow because of well you know
I have a 2020 Honda Pilot and I love it!!
Brandon H were looking at the 2020 Pilot. Scared to pull the trigger.
We have the Honda Pilot too! No complaints here. Super roomy & great car
Hyundai Santa Fe in the states lacks so much equipment compared to the Australian spec models, number one being the well proven 2.2L CRDi VGT Turbo Diesel, superb torque & decent power for a small 2.2L
They're solid, safe, reliable & dependable, suprisingly decent off road in mild/moderate situations with a good set of tires.
200hp/325lb-ft
Even better fuel economy
Combined: 30mpg
City: 25mpg
Highway: 37mpg
Vincenzo G...That's the one most people here in Korea buy too. I love that engine.
@@johnholst They aren't speed demons but they're solid engines.
@@ThomasFG Right! It's all that beautiful torque!
It;s good to see the Telluride as best choice for luxury suv. Kia's luxury flagship is beautifully elegant and posh. Dealers are getting BMW Cadillac, Mercedes, and Lexus trade ins for new Tellurides. That tells you it's market niche.
kinda surprised about this since Mrs. Erickson didn't like the SUV...
I find it funny how the Korean brands are the better alternative for basically all of the categories 😂 (not tryna hate on Korean brands, I personally like them more than any other brands)
Where does the VW Atlas fall? I’ve owned many VW over the years, so I know they are quirky but man it’s a smooth ride and the interior quality is top notch.
It's hard to believe that the Ford Edge winds up being more reliable than the Honda Passport.
Honda’s reliability ratings are quite low when looking at issues per 100 vehicles. Although the Ford Edge is not much better.

I’m glad the one I want, the telluride, seems to have done the best.
It’s literally sold out in my state! It’s such a hot commodity
Yep. Best SUV.
Oh yeah I want one bad!!!!
Telluride was also an automotive triple crown award winner for 2020. No new model has ever done so well! I love my new Telluride! So luxurious too!
Love 'under the radar' CX-9, just bought a 2020, nobody in my hood has one - badass luxury baby mover 🤣
Good choice! The CX-9 is nice!
Kia and Hyundai. Kicking butt again.
Good review but consumers should do there own research. Some of the vehicles on this list were recommended by other reviewers. I personally think CR is a bit bias.
Poppycock. They take no money from corporations.
The fact that to Americans a small SUV is a Mazda CX5 (for example) is baffling. That's a medium SUV here in the UK. A small SUV is a Mazda cx3 for example and a large SUV is a Nissan X-Trail (for example)
That Armada is a great truck. Gas mileage what do you expect it has a v8 engine with plenty of power.
Where does the Subaru Ascent fit in? It's probably the most underrated SUV. I own one with absolutely no regrets at all.
Did not mention price points for AWD or FWD or RWD and what is available on each
The passport has a stiff ride for better suspension for offroading. it also has tons of ground clearance
The Passport was definitely tuned more for offroad use than the Pilot.
Kia sure has glowed up! 💙
@ Agreed CVT just got thing for cheaply Built but expensive to repair.
@ One good thing about the Kia CVT though, is that it's a chain design, usually the type they put on much more expensive cars. It has a better feel as well.
@ Yes. But in this post, we didn't mention a model. Just CVTs in general.
@ You absolutely cannot go wrong with the Kia Telluride worth every penny!
I LOVE my 2018 HR-V.... Maybe because I have a rare 6 speed EX. More power would be nice, but i recently got nearly 44mpg on a 252 mile drive.
Great Review! Are you ever going to review Awd/4x4’s at the ORV course again?
No
I bailed out when he recommended a Ford Edge. Little homework will show you those horrible engines.
Its because this review focuses on reliability and customer reviews. I'm not a big ford fan but the new Edge has really great reviews (overall and on reliability).
BUT fyi the santa fe has even slightly better reviews :)
A little intelligence will show you that MUCH of the BS on the "horrible engines" are just that - BS.
Which engine is "horrible"?
@@eskieman3948 The V6 has an INTERNAL water pump. And water pumps DO fail. Call your local garage for an estimate to replace that pump. It will run around 2 grand. It's driven off the timing CHAIN and the front of the engine, timing chain, tensioners, guides, and cam synchronizers ALL have to come out first.
The white Telluride on the thumbnail is Booooooooyahhhhh hot!! ✌🏾✌🏾
Do you own one? If no....what are you basing your decision on?
I liked it so much I bought one! And I have to say I prefer it to the Range Rovers I considered. As a former Audi owner, I prefer Telluride. Local dealers are getting Range Rovers , BMWs, Mercedes, Cadillac , and Lexus trade ins o new Tellurides. That indicates it's market niche. Telluride in luxury oriented, not just a family hauler for soccer moms (although I'm sure it could do an excellent job). My friends describe my telluride as a luxury limo with suv capabilities. .

This is definitely true about the types of vehicles Honda is producing these days although the Civic is still the Civic if you can stomach the styling.

Face it, Honda has now dropped below GM. A better choice than both is the GMC Acadia
Our neighbor liked the 2010 KIA classic body design, but did NOT purchase it because it did NOT have a 4-cyl AWD and timing CHAINS. He bought a used 2006 Honda CRV instead. The old Corollas just keep going and going, NOT anymore NO more.
You have a Great voice
We've been looking to replace our old Ford Escape; I'm leaning to the Ford Edge. Our Fords have been very reliable over the last 30 years. We bought a new Honda Pilot last year - meh.
at this rate Honda is going to be the next GM.
I took my ‘09 Ridgeline in for service and got a new Passport as a loaner. On the second day I had it, the radio completely died (wouldn’t connect to CarPlay, Sirius, or even FM radio), and the screen itself wouldn’t shut off even when you shut off the car. The backup camera also quit working when this happened. Totally disappointed with newer Hondas and will be keeping my old Ridgeline as long as possible!
i have a 2013 Honda Accord, i have it for five years, 100k miles in odometer and no problem so far, only brake pads change transmission oil and nothing else, excellent car .
Augusto Junior Same! All I’ve done is change the oil...sometimes a year between changes
@japanwatchconnection how do you know that? Ever purchased the recent model year?
Augusto Junior but it’s so boring and hallow feeling.
I have a 2020 Kia Telluride and love it. It has the 3.8 L V-6 FWD. I get 24-25 MPG around town and 30 on the highway. I've had it a year and had "0" problems. Very comfortable to drive. Lots of room in the back for all my fly fishing gear and my dog. The only problem that I know is that you can't hardly find them at the dealer because production can't keep up with sales.
How the mighty have fallen. Remember when Honda dominated in quality and reliability?
Don't listen CS
I have a 2016 Mazda CX5 and it has been a decent car over the last 4 years, good mileage and handles well.
So all he did in this video is re-hash CR's opinions. Why make a video at all??
Great summarized video. Thank you.
No mention of the Subaru ascent even though it scored 96 on safety
Transmission issues plague the Ascent.
Very safe.. But seems to be very unreliable. Boxster engine and CVT Transmission... Those 2 components overshadow ALL of the safety positives.
Safety and AWD is the only thing subaru has going for them. The cars themselves are not as good as they once were.

I'm amazed how low Honda has fallen. They used to be some of the most reliable vehicles and in recent years they have all kinds of reliability problems like oil dilution and oil consumption.
no Toyota highlander ? I was hoping to see that on the list :)

It's Toyota, does not deserve to turn your head to.
Glad I saw your comment, I was looking to see what he said. Saved me time!
I would include text at the bottom of the screen of what vehicle you're reviewing.
We should redefine the term "SUV".
I know, right? Most of these are either hatchbacks with the suspension jacked up an inch or two, or beefy cars with the same low ground clearance and street-hugging bumper shape as a sedan.
Extra safety features like blind spot monitoring etc should not be only on higher trims, it's kind of gross if you think about it.
It's like "are you spending enough money to potentially save lives?"
It's odd

So happy I chose the new Santa Fe..
You didn't mention how many different vehicles were tested in each group. I just bought an Xc-90 Volvo that I think is pretty nice and it compares with the Audi and other luxury SUV's like Infinity and Lexus, BMW and of course Mercedes.
Any models from VW has to be avoided as well because of poor reliability, poor acceleration, lurchy transmission, and poor customer service.
Overall a good list. Nice that you called out Honda over the second SUV they've introduced that has had major issues in the first year. I sincerely hope the KIA Telluride is as good as everybody thinks it is. Otherwise, a lot of people will have egg on their faces. It's hard to knock Jeep on the Compass. It was cheap to produce and sells well. For all the "not a real jeep people", nothing they sell is a "real Jeep" but the wrangler, and even it's debatable since it relies on huge 4 door variants for sales these days.
One that will outlast all these: 4Runner!
But what if I was leasing

@@ashleycorbin5920 There is nothing wrong with the 4Runner it just isn't the most practical choice due to fuel economy and in many people's opinion lack of amenities when purchased primarily just to haul the family around in. The Explorer looks finally grown on me. I like the Telluride it's nice that would be my choice Kia has gotten better even CX-9 too both manufacturers are highest on my list. The Armada is beautiful but interior looks outdated and Expedition is nice looking.
Keep in mind the Explorer shown in this video was an ST model, which looks way better than the standard version, but probably garners the same criticism.
That ipad is a big eye sore. And a decent trim for $55k? Overpriced. Ford Co should get their heads out of their behinds.
What about the 2020 Honda CR-V? Issues with fuel in oil for cars in northern climate is the problem resolved?
Hi there , what do you think of the new Hyundai Palisade Limited trim test drove one today and was actually impressed mind you last time I owed a Korean vehicle was Pony in the 80s
Wife and I own a 2nd Gen Subaru Forester XT and a 2020 Hyundai Kona both are great cars we use the Roo in the Winter because it’s one of the best cars ever made for winter driving and we drive the Hyundai in summertime because of it’s MPG and Handling
The Ford Explorer ST is great, fun to drive!
Sadly, the Explorer has many glaring weaknesses that make it a poor choice in this segment. But yes, it's fun to drive!
I didn't know it came with a 6 spd mt. The old Explorer sport 3 doors w/ 5 spd are fine as hell though
@@AIDAHAR210 It doesn't come with a stick in the US, or any market as far as I know.
@@johnholst sad
@@AIDAHAR210 It would be great to have the option, wouldn't it?! But nobody buys manual transmissions anymore. Even Genesis, the only conpany to offer a stick on the small lux/compact cars is getting rid of theirs this summer. Truth of our times I guess.
I bought brand new Ford F150. 2017 After 2 years I was on a dealership. For some repairs by warranty and repairs again 8 times. Japanese car number one. American number 100.
I guess Honda’s check didn’t clear.
Says the drooling fool....
@@eskieman3948 ,great comeback fool
@@eskieman3948 u work at CR? Or have a significant relative that does?
And apparently Kia/Hyundai's did
Yes they're reliable, and things work like they're supposed to, but they don't really make "good" cars, they make a generalized car for lots of people, and for those who have no passion for driving. The crv is not for people who like to drive. It's for the very very old and lame.
Great and Thorough Video! Thanks so Much!
I thought you did your own reviews?? Not just read out others opinions. I've always been suspect of Consumer Reports. Always remember back in the day when they rated the Toyota Matrix highly but the Pontiac Vibe as poor. Same exact vehicle with different trim built in the same factory.
I'm confused about the Armada vs Sequoia. I test drove both and the Seqouia was worse in almost every possible way. Interior quality, refinement, ride, engine power, infotainment....every way. How is the Sequoia an "alternative"? Plus if you listen closely to what they say about the pluses of the Seqouia, they turn right around and say those are the reasons to avoid lol.
I would buy the new Telluride but my 2011 optima has 150k miles and is still running strong. Was debating on gifting it to my sister then buying a base model Telluride and lifting it with some large off road tires with mabey some roof lights.
Do it 🙌
Surprised not to see a Toyota RAV4 on this list anywhere
Kia Sorento’s are smooth as well!
He was wrong about the Kia Sportage only getting 23 mpg. Mine gets 30 mpg as an average and 28 mpg around town. (2.0 litre 6 speed AT).
