I was hard stuck bronze, but now am currently gold 1. These videos make me think about league in a different way and have been helping me climb.
yeah me too!! its a mindset imo
With the addition of emerald . People got boosted up a league or two. Everything lower than emerald is low elo now
@ouroboros4664 what does this comment accomplish? It's very likely that OP did really get better at the game, and pointing out that "everyone is elo inflated" does nothing but bring them back down mentally. How about we congratulate people for the small wins instead of tearing them down? Beyond that, this kind of mindset is toxic to the self, too. Be proud of yourself if you climb too, and don't think abt how you are actually a lower elo or that you don't deserve it! That's the whole point of the beginning of this video.
@@fookyuen5939 i told him , he s probably still dogshit . When new account are put in plat 4 lol. If ur lower than emerald ur a dog low elo shit now. I have no mercy for this creatures to have a ego now. Back in my days u actualy needed skill to climb. Not get busted by riot because its players are quitiing i bronze.
@@fookyuen5939 yeah, it brings their ego back to the pisslow where it should be. Nothing personal against OP, great job, but literally everyone thinks they're the goats below p2-p1 because they climbed 5 divisions since S13 split 2. They don't understand they're still as bad as they were so they talk a lot of crap, that's all.
I really like the high vs low elo comparisons. It’s nice to get the feedback in a VOD review setting, but actually being able to see the differences in action makes a big difference in emphasizing why they matter so much.
I'm not high ELO by any means (emerald/diamond) but usually I can tell by 30 seconds what ELO you are ( at least if it's diamond or below). It's all the little things.
@@Elimbi1i'm diamond 3 and all i can tell is if you're below diamond i can't instantly tell if someone is emerald or plat or gold lol.
@@vladys5238 well I play botlane so maybe it's a different story. but there's like 2-3 basic signs and 2-3 advanced that are a dead giveaway how competent my support or ADC will be this lane.
I like the new segment, I think a lot of lower elo players find it hard to realise what the high elo players are doing because they havnt even learned these concepts yet, having a breakdown and a clear comparison could make fundamentals like fog of war way more accessible to low elo players, because just looking at a beifeng vod isnt gonna get a silver qiyana to abuse fog of war. But explaining it and showing it makes it much easier to spot in the future.
high elo vs low elo segment is very informative. helps put into perspective the differences between ranks, and i think it will slowly help players understand and appreciate the difficulty of the game and each rank/level of play
I liked Nathan's point at 16:04 about how most people have reached a point where they previously thought they would be satisfied with but upon reaching that goal start to strive for something even greater. This season my goal was to hit emerald with Jarvan. I hit emerald last split but only because I mainly played Maokai and Sejuani who were quite strong for most of the season. Jarvan is my favorite character, but I had a very poor win rate with him last split, so I wanted to try and get better at him in 14-1. I placed plat 3 and hit emerald 4 after 10 games of just Jarvan. It was kind of anticlimactic that I reached my split goal in the first week. My new goal was to not demote so I continued with the process. After a couple more weeks I found myself at diamond 4. I demoted and promoted back and forth 3-4 times before a recent win streak that brought me to within 1 win of diamond 3. I hovered around that mark to several blocks in a row and started to get frustrated that I couldn't win to get to D3.
That's when I took a step back and reminded myself that my goal just two months prior was to reach emerald 4. I was doing great and shouldn't get so upset about not being able to hit D3. I was also reminded of something Coach Curtis talked about a while ago. When he posed the question about what our climbing expectations should be. One division a month? Well that's gold 4 to diamond 4 in 12 months. Just one division every 3 months is a whole rank each year which I would be very happy with. I told myself I should expect and anticipate setbacks, loss streaks, 'unwinnable' games. They're all part of the journey. Keeping that in mind has helped me avoid frustration and just look forward to improving from the losses to help me continue my climb.
Hi all. Avid listener (audio only) who also uses CZcams for other things. I wish that the podcast was separate from Curtis Clip Corner and this new video segment. It does not make for good audio content, and its not clear when it will begin/end if I want to reference back to it later or skip by it.
I think any video segments would be better as a standalone CZcams clip. It would make it easier for me - an audio lister - to find and enjoy it. You could even consider using them to entice CZcams subs - ex. subscriber only content.
Keep up the good work, I love the podcast - that segment just really deserves to be on video to be best understood, and detracts from the audio experience in its current distribution format.
I actually think I agree with this. I am more of an audio listener for these podcasts, and I love listening to them in the car or while doing other tasks so separating the clip corner into a separate video I can watch on its own would be very helpful to me
I have to agree also, I like the clip segment I think it's good but yeah podcasts are so much more flexible if you only have to listen to them.
BTW OP learning and climbing is an amazing experience if you respect the process and grow from it. Good job keep it up if it brings you joy
Also an avid (watcher) and I really don't wish this was separated from the podcast. Wow someone has a different opinion than you; GL catering to everyone.
Podcasts are an audio medium. They can make a youtube video for video analyses.@@pseudophi
As a self-taught artist and a person thats been playing league for 7 years I always tell myself
"You can't be jealous of the work you haven't put in"
Like I have no clue how much more work x artist or x player has put in compared to myself so I dont feel as bad about what i put out
Oooh, that's a really solid quote
What he said
Timing lined up nicely for me, just watched a Dr.K video on "Moving the goalposts", which in short described the same idea of never patting yourself on the back for a good job, leading to feelings of failure and insecurity. Small wins mindset can and should be applied to all endeavors. Thanks for the ep once again!
I talked to the guy that did the silver 4 to plat in under 20 days and he did have a pretty long competitive gaming background. Played a lot of counterstrike I think. Essentially his baseline play level was probably closer to plat and if you're still working through iron or bronze or silver I wouldn't worry about it.
Ι haven't watched the entire video but I want to comment early so that you guys will see this comment. I want to say thank you for doing your best in this podcast and really presenting your best selves. The words heard in the first part of the podcast I think were really important for people to hear. Showing a bit about the "behind the scenes" of Curtis' life makes everybody's journey so much more meaningful. Seeing the person who I have looked up to for years - and still feel so thankful for - struggle is a really powerful moment that I am not sure with what words to describe except for "positive". Just as Nathan said, hardships like these really are true, and instead of getting complacent with our journeys (since "even your idol feels like shit"), I feel like this is one more reason to strive for your goals and express your best self in all ways shapes and forms.
Thank you Curtis, Nathan, and everybody who read this, and let's keep doing our best, as we all have our own journey!
High elo v low elo section is a huge win!
Love the new segment!
I just finished the episode and i have to say i really do love the new segment of low elo vs high elo details segment, definetly needs a new name and a little jingle song to it. I feel like its eadier to put things into perspective when looking from both viewpoints.
Sticks really hard with me recently. I hit diamond after chasing it for 8 YEARS, and yeah it felt good to finally achieve it, but it didn't last. I thought it was the #1 thing that could instill unshakable confidence in myself, but that couldn't be any further from the truth. Achieving is cool, but just as the cliche' saying goes: It's about the journey, not the destination.
to add my learning: The goal is the future, but we are at our happiest when we are living in the present. It's the small things that we DO and appreciate in the NOW that really define who we are. The shiny titles and achievements are really just as temporary as the day-to-day activities we decide to partake in, so enjoy what you do TODAY.
Fking Amateur... Ive been hardstuck silver for 9 YEARS
@@eyo8766:o legendary!
congrats though!! 😁
The first chapter in this is so real.
Curtis, I think you should check out the book "Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic-and What We Can Do About It" by Jennifer Wallace.
While it's focused on American kids of today, it's been an eye opening read for me even as a childless millennial. It has been helping me unpack and process my own toxic achievement mindset (not that I'm cured of it, but I've gained a new understanding and can see the problem now). It has concepts that can be related back to league, our own negative inner monologues, and comparing ourselves to others.
The social media feed Curtis spoke of I have experienced that too! I can't speak for everyone because like you say it could be because of the algorithm but I have experienced it too. Curtis actually gave me a very different perspective of it when he was talking about it and it's made me think quite a bit about it. (Forgive me my comma key does not work.)
I love when curtis starts cooking with the self-love ❤
Went from Silver 2 to Plat in about a month. Was really underestimating myself but I think your advise, Curtis, has helped me a lot on my midlane journey(Small champion pool and etc).Didn’t think I could do it.
in chess you more think in how many lines could they opt to go for and calculate based on that, when you are good enough at chess then there might only be 3 to 4 moves an opponent can reasonably make at any given point, and then if they would make one of those moves you would calculate where that "line" would lead, so its more like thinking on the 10th order with several different lines so 4 branches 10 long so to speak but you can definitely apply this concept to league
I think it would be interesting to have you guys discuss the difference between reviewing a game from a lost match vs one from a won match, how can you find the pattern in what you did was leading to the wins
I appreciate the message about champ pools/mastery. I've only ever climbed when I play 1-2 champs. If I play 2 champs they need to be similar or I don't go anywhere.
22:10 love the journey not only the destination
I was hard stuck e 4 and had been playing since season 3, finally climbed to emerald 1 just by a switch in mindset watching you guys, I still struggle with keeping a real good process and find myself sometimes just playing to play
I have been playing since season six, and I've never had the confidence or mindset to play ranked for longer than my placements (always placing silver or bronze). Since coming back to League a few months ago I found this podcast, and the information in it has been instrumental in giving me the poise to take this game seriously. I just hit gold IV for the first time yesterday!
14:37 from this point the next two minits is peak Curtis and I LOVE it!
Love your podcast
Thank you guys for these amazing podcast I managed to get to plat 3 in a day on my fresh lv 30 account easily. My Main account that’s like lv 260 or so is silver 3. I made a new one to just start all over and re play the game but actually trying to focus and work on my Lane phase and how my champ works as well as a bit on champ mastery.
I needed this video
Hey Curtis/Nathan, appreciate your content and been following since the start. Feedback from me would be to have High Elo Low Elo, Summoner school and Curtis' clip in a separate vid. Appreciate the hardwork since yonks and always love to listen to ya bois to continue having a healthy relationship with the game
Need Nathan’s classic intro. No offense Curtis lol
I absolutely agree on the point Curtis makes about understanding what you are trying to do instead of how. I've been trying to get better st invading and counter jungling, so I went back to playing BelVeth (mained her for almost 6 months after her release). I had a game a couple of days ago where we had a very fed Varus, but the enemy team had Vi, Malzahar, ChoGath, so I figured my best bet was to be the engage first, so they are forced to ult me, while giving Varus space to free fire. Problem was Varus didn't want to fight. He was taking tier 2 top while Vi Malz are flanking him and he didn't even think about turning, so when I turned he didn't notice and I died for nothing. After a few fights like that I understood that he's not interested in grouping and teamfighting despite my efforts to make space for him, but I still wanted to draw pressure to me instead of him. So I started side laning. I knew I couldn't be beaten 1v1, so I kept forcing multiple members to me and let him do what he wanted to do without forcing fights near him. Same concept, different execution
I struggled for years to get diamond and listening to yall I realize I was a high plat player missing something. I started to adapt a couple years ago then finally getting diamond I legit cried feeling so relieved. Now I’m looking to grow more and hoping the process to masters isn’t as long. Already struggling but reaching out to friends who are masters to help me see what I’m not seeing
If you are willing to not have a huge ego and instead recognize mistakes, you will get to master no problem.
If you blame games on other people I don’t see you getting out of dia
@@takumu781 I don’t blame others. I make it an active thing to never blame my teammates. I do get frustrated like anyone. But I always make sure to focus on what I could have done to make the game better. There is always something I could do to improve the game and possibly turn that into a win or something more positive for team.
@@bucketboysx3129 legit the best mentality, nice to hear!
Hearing how Nathan is so easily predicting my all-in brainless diamond head as an Irelia main is pretty eye opening to be honest xDDD
I like the new segment
I'm sure you guys may know this, but these videos are CRAZY GOOD.
Liked the new segment!
Shame about your level of play in League is pretty rampant in the below platinum experience. One of my recent teammates added me after a block and I thought, "It's the end of my block, let's see what he's got to say." He said that I was so bad that I should NEVER queue ranked again. He looked up my opgg and saw that I placed Bronze in season 13 split 1 (I started playing in season 12) and he was shocked to find "a genuine bronze player." Of course it didn't matter that I'm gold now and so is he as I will "never improve beyond a bronze level."
I felt bad for him. The amount of SHAME he must have for being gold is astounding. He must be so LOST in his journey to the point he's contacting his teammates after the game to find any little thing that he's "better" at and then ridiculing them.
I blocked him rather than directing him to Broken by Concept. Couldn't be bothered to be honest!
Thanks for everything guys. I was stuck emerald 4 for 100 games trying to improve my map awareness and not dying to ganks. Having clear things u can improve upon make the game so much more fun! Climbing feels more rewarding as well!
Bit off topic from the video but, I recently revisited HotS since it's easier to digest for my friends who are really new to MOBAs as a whole. While playing though, I realized HotS feels better than League if you take the term MOBA literally not so much for being "Massive" but more for the "Battle Arena" aspect.
But comparing HotS and League, I noticed the map is substantially smaller and more objective focused. Which has made me wonder if League could benefit from a smaller 5v5 map
Rank this season is in such a weird place, with the addition of Emerald, many hardstuck players (such as myself) got boosted up a division and as good as it should feel to finally hit that milestone after years of playing.. It comes out as a cheap reward and feels unwarranted. I now find myself seeking the tier above it just to compensate with this illusion of improvement.
For my background, I had been Gold since season 7, floating around G3 to G1 for many seasons playing casually as a toplaner, now with the addition Emerald, I can easily exist in plat and went up to plat 1 last split, but it is honestly so hard to say if I’ve improved at all or if this game is just shoving me a brand new rank to make me feel better. I’m currently sitting at 70% winrate over 35~ games on P4, I’ll be once again aiming for Emerald this split and only after hitting it will I feel like I have improved at all from my general gold skill level.
I normally encourage new players to try every role and a bunch of champs, then once they have decided what primary and secondary role they prefer, then narrow down their champ pool to 2-3 champs, with heavy emphasis on one. Basically one trick at that point.
One trick is by far the easiest way to climb
@@takumu781 I completely agree. I just really want new players, when starting out, to experience different aspects of the game before deciding to focus on ranked. Then OTP when trying to climb. Just seems sad to not try a lot of things before OTP for ranked.
I love the high elo low eli comparison so much as a topic and seperate video, but it does disrupt the podcast format, especially as a mistly audio viewer
We have the jungleMaster☠️(JUNGLE CHALLENGER NO???)☺️ Thanks for a good episode. The competition always lead to a top down shamming

You are forgetting that Platinum is the same as gold was before emerald. He has not improved his rank. He is is still late the same skill level
I would actually say Emerald is between old high silver to low dia because it only takes 7 wins to reach emerald and emerald literally feels like old smurf que its actually terrible sometimes u win without impact just because ur team is 3 divisions higher than the enemy one.
Not exactly, the distribution is different. Everyone didn't just move up a division.
@@randomnobody9229 Riot even made a post about it and the vast majority did get inflated for free.
Rank-shaming is the worst. Even friend groups at school were very clearly divided by rank in the game, it's not just social media. I grinded a ton of ranked just to maintain certain relationships, but tbh I probably should've just found better people to hang out with
You should have! I always was plat during high school by my friends that played varied between bronze and gold aside from 1 diamond friend, and the point when we played together was to have fun, no bully eachother
yall should do a video about loltyler1 havign a challenger account but also being 40% winrate in emerald
comparison is the thief of joy
I made a rapid climb from silver > plat and now i cant seem to climb anymore. I out climbed my ability and have to go back to the process that caused my climb in the first place.
Sucks, but it's good you noticed it and can now work on specific things
I like the concept of the high vs low elo clips. But with the skipping around with Karasmai vid was a bit jarring it might be a pain but editing the clip a bit more, might be better with options for you to pause.
Something that nobody talks about when it comes to talent is that you objectively learn things faster when you are younger than 8 years old. Theta brain waves stop at about this age and you only really get them while you are sleeping after this point. Some people start skills/games before 8 years old and have had their brain physically mold around that skill/game. Faker has been playing competitive strategy games since he was very young. So he learns more champs faster cause he is literally built to play the game.
Most people either lean too much into talent as a concept, and use it to demonize themselves. (ie: I'll never be good enough, I'll never beat these talented people)
Or they go the opposite and say talent doesn't exist at all. Try to discredit it ect.
It's environment. It's just the same thing that causes us to have other mental strengths or weaknesses. It's not genetic, it has never been genetic. It also exists, but it's not just some magic number.
...and of course "talented" people who have found success work extremely hard
im more confused about ranks now vs past. is it harder or easier to get a given rank?
Way easier I got placed in plat and everyone seems so bad and I haven’t played since 2014
Easier until high emerald. Then it evens out again I‘d say. But its easier to Hit Master than a few seasons ago (percentage wise)
About the same but less compressed so barriers aren't as hard. Gold 1 vs plat 4 is no longer a canyon because the old plat 1-3 players are emerald now along with the bad d4 players.
@@tpl1339 ur older probably smarter, its pretty rare for player bases to get worse on average overtime
51:08 actually, no. At least not at first. Faker was one of the worst in his friend group when they were into a fighting game (according to the gbay doc on YT). The difference is Faker, well, he seems to genuinely love the process of learning and mastery, especially of puzzles and games. He's a freak of dedicated, quality hard work. Those types are not uncommon but put them in the right environment and given enough luck and support, they can go far.
... As you basically later state. It's the rigor and rapid learning cycle.

Before i watch this video i'm going to declare Leagues Zeroth Law, Anyone at or below thine Rank is piss low elo, and anyone higher is boosted.
Thus sayeth our king Tyler1
what if they implement a system where they randomly drop a gold player (basically any rank under gm) in a challenger game, and neither side will gain/lose lp if the 5-chal side beat the 4 chal side. However, if the 4-chal side beat the 5-chal side, the winner wins 2x and loser loses 2x lp. Additionally, you'll gain more lp carrying a high plat vs carrying a low master, or lose less if you lost to 4-chal + low master than 4-chal + high plat. The carried player has to sign up for this, and won't lose or gain lp no matter what happens. Challengers will also only get games like this every maybe 20 games. Maybe it'll speed up their q time, and humble the majority of the player base lol
No. Just no
Im a emerald player, i know that me and my fellows plats, golds and all below sucks so bad. We compare shit with less stinky shit, at the end of the day we are all shit
Very good episode. I'm emerald but I feel like I'm really low elo when actually emeral is medium elo. I think there's a narrative perpetuated by pro players and league content creators that even masters is "pisslow". To them I'm sure it is! For the average player though and taking into account percentages gold or plat even is a solid rank. Ofc any rank is fine cause that's your journey but I just find it funny that even high elo and pretty good players are considered bad. What's not factored in is all these content creators, CZcamsrs, streamers etc and ofc pro players ... they live in a bubble and play at the highest level. The real raw percentages of ranks is suprising, for instance Gold bracket is top 40%.
Masters is high enough to win lane against challenger if playing a good matchup and not getting camped.
Challenger games literally have masters players as roster fillers. They're not as good but it's not completely out of reach.
% are not significant. Too many casuals and trolls inflate numbers
I am unranked and I beat gold, emerald and plats on a regular basis. I even once got a friend request from a GM asking for my rank because I stomped him in lane (he was practicing Quiyana, not with his main). I know is not the same but it is an example on how many factors may have a higher impact in game than your Rank
@@sebastiantroncoso2958 I think percentages can be taken seriously.
Casual players are still players because if they're playing ranked they're automatically competitive as they are playing a competitive gamemode. Why are bronze or iron players casual for instance. They're not necessarily they are just below average. You could say a casual player is someone who takes it less seriously maybe? or puts less time into it which is fair but I don't think that's enough to negate %'s
I'm a bit confused on your unranked argument because if you're unranked then you're playing normals against these players? If that's the case then that's no way to evaluate your rank or skill level since normals aren't serious at all, or at least compared to ranked. A GM support player isn't a GM mid player, maybe they're low plat for instance - this is even true for different types of champions considering what they main.
I think too that you're using unranked like it's something where you're below iron even, you're not even ranked when you could be a solid player but you've never decided to measure your rank or skill which is what playing ranked does. You could easily be a plat player for instance, saying you're unranked is pretty meaningless ... just means you haven't discovered what your rank/skill level is.
@@KD-_- I'm not sure what your point is. Is it that the top % of players who are challenger isn't that unattainable as they often play with GM's and Master players?
@@hadessonofcronus1826 if masters is attainable, then challenger level skill in some aspects of the game is attainable.
The full package of a challenger or competitive level player is what is elusive. You will find masters level players who have mechanics or wave management at the challenger level but are deficient somewhere else and that's why they're not GM or Challenger.
This difference is more subtle than differences between gold, silver, and plat players because as you move up the ladder small advantages start to matter more.
Great... This video made me feel more like shit
i’ve been a perennial silver player until last split when i finally broke gold but with the whole rank inflation thing i know i didn’t actually improve as a player. i just want to not be in a mickey mouse elo lol
minimum 3 games a day on average puts you at 5 years of consistent work just to get mastery hours with one champion.
Comparing myself with others is what helped me push myself and improve and climb. I don't think I would've ever actually gotten "decent" at the game if I didn't, I would never have put in enough effort.
Same
I have the same thinking process of comparing and “competing” against my friends to get better, or just get a higher rank. been going pretty good so far and it pushes me to do my best and never surrender
I was better in silver than i was in plat. Worked back into league after a nasty hand injury to my mouse hand. I got flamed for not playing like a silver every game xd
They kept begging me to gank dudes with flash still up while i have 300 gold in another quadrant. Lmao noob mentality. Go for more gold and 100% play like emerald when I was there
I followed some of the trash talkers. Hard stuck. I went back to plat myself
Is there any episode talking about premades?
I have been tracking match making and there is no coincidence here. Every time I have a winning strike, the game matches me with a poor winrate premade that perma feeds and flames and ruin your game to the point it is impossible to carry.
I know you don't believe in this but I have been tracking it out of curiosity and it is no joke, premades break matchmaking
The more I hear your podcast the more I realize how different LAS server experience can be.
Here, poor connection can make your game go 4v5 so frequently that you wouldn't believe it. Also, the average player plays from a potato pc, so your Brand support may not be a bad player, but there is a high possiblity that his pc performs so bad that he can't even position himself to press R in a team fight.
Of course, you have to add the usual toxicity and ragr quitting, making LOL the most miserable experience you can imagine.
All of that make people don't commit to their games. No joke that 7/10 ranked games you will have an AFK for the first 2 or 3 mins because they just don't care and your team will vote "no" to remake because they juat dont care.
Srsly, I play online games since i was 13 y/o and never got so frequently frustrated over things that are out of my control as playing this game
I just see no point in going past gold ... Youve got ur skin and uve proven you're not completly terrible at the game like unless you're coach/pro/streamer whats the benefit? Just seems like torture id rather derp around in normals /arams / fun modes at that point
Yo y'all completely missed the point with CasualGamer's question. His friend's behavior is not justified and is not healthy. It's a case where his "passion for the game" as you put it is clearly negatively affecting his friendships. I think CasualGamer was looking for support from you guys to call out his friend's obnoxious behavior. Maybe ask jonathan brown what he thinks.
If you think you’re good at the game because of your higher elo rank then go play a block of normal PVP games. You’ll get ego checked quickly by some random in Gold 3 with hundreds or thousands of games per season.
People only talk about about low and high elo but mid elo is real.
A platinum player is like a god compared to low silver and below. A plat player will even win losing matchups like vayne into caitlyn or draven against gold players except for like gold 1.
