Melbourne to Sydney in a Tesla Model Y

- I recently drove up to Sydney with my Model Y. The idea behind this drive was to follow the nav of the car and use the Tesla Superchargers.
My next video will be the drive back where I didn't use any of the Tesla Superchargers to see what the experience would be like for a non Tesla EV. Be sure to look out for that one.

One hour, seventeen minutes, and forty seconds. Still, far more entertaining and informative than anything that's come out of Hollywood in the last few years...
Thank you, that's very kind of you to say. I was quite anxious about this being too long. Glad you still found it useful.
Be warned. I am editing the drive back video now and it may end up being a bit longer. 😲
21:00 What dedication to the viewers, spending all that time getting the camera set up, moving back, plugging in, checking speed... while you were busting!
The things we do for each other. 😂 although I find when I am focused on talking to camera it can help distract me from the “busting” issue. 😉
Thanks Lee, another really informative video 👍
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. ☺️
Great video Lee, looking forward to the next one!
Thanks, editing the next one now. hopefully will be out next week. It may end up being even longer than this one. 🤣
Lee, thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts. I love your natural friendly style and how the experiences are real-wprld and not sponsored sanitised
Thanks for the kind words. I would be sanitised and sponsored, but I’m not there yet. 🤣
Another awesome & informative video many thanks 🙏
Thanks for the kind comment. Glad you enjoyed it. 🙏🏻
Great video, very entertaining and informative. As always, love your casual down to earth attitude.
Thank you for the kind words. Very happy that you're enjoying it and finding it useful. ☺️
Very entertaining, love your style, keep it up mate!
Thank you, glad you like it. Thank you for taking the time to comment and let me know.
Fantastic video. I love the trip. Great information on the charging and route planning. It's not as simple as I thought on a Tesla. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you
Enjoyed that thank you , very informative and like your sense of humour lol 👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. ☺️
I didn’t even realise this video was over an hour long. Well done, it was entertaining the whole way through and I’ve learned a lot. Thank you 😊
Thank you for taking the time to comment. very glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful.☺️
Greetings from Chicago! originally from Sydney. Enjoyed the video very entertaining and informative.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. You must be happy to be going into Summer now on that side of the world. ☺️
Very interesting and funny, good job doing the video.
Thank you. 🙏🏻
Great video, really useful. I am considering a Model Y Performance - thanks!
Thank you, very kind of you to take the time to let me know. I think the Performance will be great! Hope if you do order it that you'll use my referral code. 😉

Another quite delightful one, appreciate your feedback along the way and your interpretations of what the vehicle is providing for you.
Thanks for the kind comments. Be sure to tune in next week for the trip back where I used all non superchargers.
You’re right, it was my interpretations as I am far from an expert and working out a lot of this stuff as I go along. 🤣
Thanks for watching. I was quite anxious about putting out such a long video.
@@notacarguy_au The length may not be great for all. Could potentially section it out in the future to maybe 30 minute windows. Your style and presence in your videos are entirely what draw me into your content. I myself own a Tesla Model 3, so it is nice to get another perspective of influence it all has. Only other thing to add is that I often have the consumption view up when trying to digest more information on the usage. Another little note is that your first drive/trip will always be not as efficient as subsequent trips.
This is similar to 2015-2022 gas vehicles in how they calculate your estimated range based on your previous trip. Along with the battery condition really helps out in range quality. For me in -20F often, the first "leg" of a trip is always worse than the rest.
I watched the lot, great video
Thank you.
You’re fast becoming my comfort CZcamsr. Thank you for these MY road trips, I’ll take all the MY content you can give me!
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment. You’re gonna make me blush. ☺️
I really enjoyed your video.
Thank you very much for the kind comment. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I made to the end in 3 viewings. Thanks.
Well done! It was a long video. Hope you found it useful and interesting. 😄
Great video I'll say.. Like your way of doing it.... Just an ordinary guy going on a trip telling what is happening...what will happen if I took the trip too.. Regular road trip for "Mr and Ms Average" to show how effortless driving long in a Tesla really is. There are other good video makers that are really into technical stuff that can be interesting too, but all in all a car is just a box to take you to a destination.. although that American box is a fairly nice and easy one. Also love you didn't edit away that you took the wrong turn into Sydney... Think we all once or twice have tried to be better and smarter than the navigation system.. And very very often realised we are totally slapped on our fingers by the car... Funny and thanks for keeping it.
Thanks for the lovely comments. That's very much my intention. There are loads of amazing video creators out there who do very good technical stuff that is amazing, but my aim is to try and show the view of someone who doesn't really know what they are doing and how I try to approach it. ☺️ Always learning.
As for leaving in the bit with me getting lost, I thought it was quite funny. And I figure there's not point in trying to pretend we aren't all human and all make mistakes from time to time. ☺️
Watched/listened to your whole video while working :)
Regarding your efficiency question at 58 minutes.
Living in Canberra and driving to Sydney your will pass a sign saying that you have reached to "top" of the Great Dividing Range. So, basically just think that about 30 km before Goulburn you will be heading downhill from about 690m above sea level.
Great video. Seriously looking at getting a long range Tesla Y within the next year or two - or something better depending on what Tesla may introduce.
Thanks, that's good to know. 👍🏼
Great video Lee, the temp was 11 % when you started and was 30% when you near Sydney May have helped the efficiency.
Thanks John, still learning. ☺️ It seems like there are quite a few different factors that can effect efficiency. I think when it comes to it, it's best to "just drive" and not worry about it too much. 🤣
But I know my viewers are interested so I go into a fair bit more detail, or at least try to. ☺️
I own a 2021 Model-3 long range. We drove from Albury to Lilydale and arrived with 36%. I love this car range is really good.
Glad to hear it. I must say, every long drive I do makes me a bit more chilled about battery and range.
I see the length of this upload, and have got snacks with me; banana, chocolate and bottle of water....right!?
Much healthier than my snacks. 🤣 I did consider bringing bananas with me, but what to do with the peels whilst driving? 😉 glad hear you’re hydrating. 👍🏻
@@notacarguy_authrow them out the window they are organic. They are not plastic etc.

Thank you. Very informative as usual. Has the return journey using the non-superchargers been posted yet?
Thanks. I finished editing that one today. Should be up by Tuesday. I think if you click a bell somewhere on one of my videos it then notifys you when new videos go up.
I just did this drive myself - First MEL > CBR > MEL, and then MEL > SYD > MEL. It's a lot different in the M3LR. The predictions have been spot on +/- 1% at most for all the charge stops. Also another interesting thing i found is that Chill mode, is actually worse at efficiency than standard/sport (yes I bought the acc boost) and the only thing I can think of is that the regen on the downhill sections are working better on sport.
That's really interesting. I wonder if maybe it's because I haven't really done a lot of long drives in my car before and BMS hasn't had enough data to be more accurate?
52:00 Exactly 💯 SUPERCHARGER TEAM INTERVIEW ❤
Would be nice to arrange that
This is terrific, because of your video that my father bought the model Y last week, and today he just went to get his car from the dealership!
We love it! Cheers mate!
Thanks for taking the time to let me know. Hope you and your father enjoy the car as much as we are.
The fact you ordered and were able to pick it up a week or so later. I’m guessing you’re not in Australia. 🤣 the wait times here are better, but still not that good.
Me again... I'm just watching you leaving Olivers in Gundagai, noting that this vid was 1 year ago... Since then, there have been many changes. The ChargeFox charger has been moved to the front of Olivers, there is a whole new SuperCharger site in Albury, and another at Holbrook (neither of them on the freeway).
On to Goulburn, and your comment on why the charger is where it is.. It's because it was most suitable for Sydney-Canberra traffic. You were lucky to be able to just drive in & charge. Re spending money in the town, we have spent many a night in motels in Gundagai, and been out for dinner & breakfasts even more, so I guess placing the chargers there IS making some extra money for the town. The reason for staying there is we are usually skipping Sydney on our way to Coffs Harbour, or even further (like the Gold Coast or Cairns for example).
Now after the Sydney Harbour Bridge... I had a similar issue as you, except, I WAS following the Tesla Nav, and due to it not knowing which lane I was on (heading from Manly to Goulburn again), it put me on lane 2 of the SHB instead of Lane 1, on to the Cahill Expressway. I ended up with a 40km detour via the western arterial (and an extra $25 in tolls). Lucky it was 3am and virtually no traffic (in fact we were the ONLY car on the SHB = unheard of !). At least the view was nice ;-)
Your summary re costs compared to petrol: We drove from Melbourne to Cairns via Dubbo early 2022 in a 1.4 litre Kia. It cost $1600. Did the same trip In our newish Tesla Model Y in Sept 2022, up via Dubbo, and returned via Coffs Harbour. It cost $380 in EV juice. We used a lot of SuperChargers on the way back - it would have been less if we had used anyone else but Tesla. So there you are, it cost $1220 LESS in the Tesla.
Yeah, things have changed quite a bit since then. I've been through that spot quite a few times in the last 12 months. 🤣
Same trip however 179kWh/Km with 3 adults, luggage and an esky fridge full of b...refreshments. We were convinced the 12v plug for the fridge was the culprit (cough)
Of note, the other 2 gents were non EV owners and any FUD and range anxiety they had previously heard by the end of the trip was clearly gone. Both impressed by the fast charging and felt better for the frequent stops and leg stretches. Thanks for sharing
Considering how much more weight and stuff you had 179 doesn’t sound that bad actually. Not that I know that much. 😀
I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was. If only we could get more and more people to experience it and see it’s not just doable but a good experience.
That would be 17.9kWh/100km. It can be very confusing with this Watt-hour (Wh) figure some people persist in using.
15kWh/100km is the number to aim for.
You had me at Biltong 😂
🤣🙏🏻
Hi Lee. I have been checking out your content recently as I bumped into your channel. Love your work. I have been thinking about pulling the trigger on a Model Y Log Range now that has become available. Have you considered towing anything with your vehicle? As you can see I have a boat fishing channel and will be towing a boat with Model Y when I get my hands on one.
Funny you should ask, I was recently chatting to a mate of mine who has a Model X that he tows with all the time about doing a video about towing. I probably won't get round to making the video till some time in July as my schedule is simply packed with stuff at the moment.
I know that towing certainly does effect range in a noticeable way, but it also does mean you can't. What type of info would you like covered in such a video?
I always charge to 90% as there is no difference in speed to 90% or even 95%. Great video, I am a similar driver as you.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes I am seeing that other than the 100% you can do at home before you leave, for the sake of efficiency, it's best to not go above 80%-90% at destination chargers. Unless of course you've stopped for lunch and you're there anyways. 😉
Interesting video. It's certainly not simple.
In my old diesel Mondeo you'd just fill up at the start and drive. Non stop all the way as far as the car's concerned.
And you'd arrive with just under 1/4 of a tank.
Of course in reality there's a couple of stops. Coffee in, coffee out.
This was of course over a year ago and was my first long electric drive. It's pretty straight forward these days. Also if I had the long range version of the car I could probably do it in 3 stops.
I find the older I get the car has more range than my bladder and so I need to stop every 2-3 hours anyways. 🤣
I did Gippsland to Albury the day after I got my Model Y - used super chargers on the way up but one single stop at an Evie charger on the way home.
A literal baptism of fire but it all worked out.
I'm still wary of planning to use non-Superchargers on my long drives though. Heard too many horror stories.
You’ll wanna watch next weeks video were I used all non superchargers on the way back.
I had me some adventures. 🤣
My aunt took me, her two kids and another aunt to a sydney trip back in 1995. It was great.
👍🏼
of course it was it was in a ICE car
Great video, not your fault you got lost in Sydney's highways. The exit's are so confusing along with the signage and hopefully one day Maps can be updated accurately with the various lanes and turn offs.
Further to this I don't know if you went back over the Harbour bridge on the way home but I think it's slightly worse.
Thanks, I did got back via the bridge, but it was at about 5am, so wasn’t that bad. 😀
Just got word that out MY delivery has been pushed back to sometime in January.
It was originally meant to be the start of November so not a happy camper at the moment.
Going to watch this again to cheer me up.
Sorry to hear that, that's really frustrating. Glad I can offer you some comfort. ☺️
Yes Tesla knows weather and topography, so it should be considered in it's planning of the trip. Noticed you didn't put the entire trip into the navigation, I think you should, it makes a better planning, i think! ;) The time remaining for continuing the trips is only as a minimum, you can stay longer ;) And you can back all up to the concrete bumper stops the wheels and you are good! 👍
Thanks, always learning. ☺️
55:35 - The reduction in consumption is because of the elevation drop from Goulburn to Sydney. Goulburn is at 650m, Sydney is at 0m. In reverse it would be 180kwh/km
Thanks for taking the time to let me know. It's pretty interesting how much of a difference elevation can make. ☺️
Thanks for the video, Lee. Really informative!
How did you find the ride on the highway? I've heard really poor things about the Model Y's ride quality and it's the only thing holding me back from ordering one.
Outside of this road trip, how are you finding it around Melbourne?
Thanks again 👍
Thanks Jacob, I haven't really found the ride good or bad. I came from a very low coupe so the ride is much better than what I was used to. ☺️ So for me the right is fine, but I am not very objective. Also, I believe the new models arriving in Au now have better suspension adjusted for our roads.
If you have the ability it may be worth going on a test drive or maybe renting a Model Y for a few days and trying it yourself?
Grid Power availability is an important consideration when locating charge stations.
That's a good point. So many different variables.
30:30 Good discussion point... the "original" SC sites (Wodonga, Gundagai, Goulburn) are now over 7 years old and at that point Tesla had to beg and convince sites to host them... it wasn't like now where host sites would be lining up! As an example, the Wodonga site at 38:00 has 4 of its 6 spaces signposted to effectively, permit ICE-ing. That's the only way Tesla could get it approved. No wonder Tesla is turning to Albury to install a 15 stall station!
And more recently I've heard other charge network operators agree with your point about local councils preferring them to be in the town itself.
Thanks for the insight, good to know. ☺️🙏🏼
I agree with doing long stops/charges... my wife however, hasa tiny bladder 😂 in saying that, good to know we have options
Always good to have options. 🤷🏻♂️😀
First time viewer of a video of yours Lee. Was entertaining and informative. Liked and subscribed. I live in Melbourne (Beveridge) and am thinking of buying a Model Y. I drive a VW coupe turbi diesel atm. Would love to catch up sometime and have a chat if you're amenable. Happy to meet you anywhere. Is the a regulat get-together for MY owners in Melbourne? Cheers, Mark.
Catching up may be a challenge, as I am pretty busy most of the time. But if you’re looking at catching up with Tesla drivers, it would be well worth joining TOCA, which is the Tesla owners club. You can join as a non Tesla owner and they have a monthly catch up that I’ve gone to sometimes, when I have the time.
Would have been good to have found the Trip section earlier when it was out.. I suspect it may have been because you started in mild temperatures in the early morning, and it got hotter as you continued
I'll often be changing my destination to work out whether I can make a further charger... Very comfortable targeting a 0% arrival these days
I think you may be right. Temperature seems to effect things a fair bit more than I thought it might.
Then again. Seems to be so many different variables. I think most times it’s a bit of this and a bit of that. 😀
I think it may be a bit of time before I am as confident as you to get to 0% 🤣
That's why it is called a GOM (Guess-O-Meter) :)
Indeed. ☺️
I would have never gone into these towns while driving an ICE car.
I reckon the charger are away from highway to probably cater for locals as well. 6 k one way is a bit a of deal. Hopefully, the petrol stations will have chargers soon like ampol, bp etc.
Someone else commented a few days ago that apparently there are some stories out there that these chargers were put in the towns to encourage folks to drive in.
I am seeing that not so much the Tesla chargers but certainly non Tesla chargers seem to be setup closer to the highway for long drives.
Hi Lee. I do the Melb-Syd run quite often, and I usually recharge at the ChargeFox 350kW charger just northeast of Euroa. My memory must be playing tricks on me though because I thought there were Tesla chargers right alongside the ChargeFox chargers? (I just confirmed with my navigator (wifey), and she agreed there were Tesla chargers at the Service Centre on the freeway). Plugshare says there aren't any, so does the Tesla map - I reckon they have been removed, which is a bad choice IMO. I'm not too keen on having to make 10km detours into a town, I prefer to stick to the freeway (especially on the Hume Hwy) so this might be another reason NOT to use the Tesla chargers. I'm looking forward to viewing the NON-Tesla charging trip in a later episode, which I tend to do a lot, mainly due to the huge cost difference, 70c at Tesla, compared to 54c (or less) at ChargeFox 350kWh or 32c at ChargeFox 50kWh. CF is a HUGE saving ! BTW, I am a TSLA shareholder, but that doesn't mean I will be screwed at a Tesla Charger...
The Tesla chargers must have been there quite a long time ago, as they have been in the town on Euroa since I started doing these videos and that's about 1.5 years now. Would be more convenient if they were at the Shell with all the other chargers.
Particularly as other than the toilets, there really isn't any shops or anything near the Superchargers now to support the local economy? 🤷🏻
Thinking of getting an EV , this is the most important 1 hour + video i have seen. Thank you for sharing , I started thinking i will not watch the whole video and before i knew it video was over. Can you please tell me your total spend on charging ?
I’m so pleased to hear you found it helpful. That’s why I do it. 😀
For the trip to Sydney I think the total charging cost was about $66 from memory.
The snacks would certainly super charged the driver 😂
This is true. 🤣
The reason for the better than usual economy between Goulburn and Sydney is that it is actually slightly downhill between those 2 towns, not so much Sydney traffic helping out.
Thanks Doug, good to know. Interestingly you’ll see in next weeks video the overall efficiency was better on the way back to Melbourne. Is that whole direction more downhill?
I thought maybe it being warmer may also have some effect?
@@notacarguy_au Not sure about that Lee but if you check the section between Sydney and Goulburn you will probably find it was not so good. The Great Divide does make it's presence felt.
Unfortunately it was a bit cold and rainy as I left Sydney so conditions were quite different to compare.
Hey Lee, does Tesla give you the ability to remove a charge stop when you start navigation? For example- at the beginning of the video you said it wants you to charge for 0 mins and top up to 100 and continue, can you remove that from your navigation trip so it doesn’t take you there…
I'm pretty sure it does. I am not near my car at the moment to check, but I'm fairly confident I've seen that option.
Nice 👍. Are you planning to drive Sydney to Adelaide?
Probably not as I live in Melbourne. 🤣
Hi Lee. I forgot in my last post to ask you, if you could do a comparison between the estimation given by ABRP and that given by Tesla's own navigation. I created a trip from our house to my sons home and return, which is 245 km. ABRP predicts that we will return with 11% SoC (starting charge 100%). I suspects ABRP to be a bit on the conservative side, but cannot test it my self yet, as my MY is still on its way.
In my very unscientific testing I did find the result different. But I wonder if the car nav gets “smarter” the more I drive long distances. 🤷🏻♂️
In regards to why less power usage from Goulburn to Sydney, living in Canberra we can drive to Sydney using 6.5L/100km on e way to Sydney, coming home is always at least 1L more, so it's more downhill.
Goulburn is at 642 metres elevation. Sydney is about 20 metres.
That's interesting. So many different variables to consider.
Sure it’s not the car just reflecting that it’s a lot more of a drag to go back to Goulburn 😂
I reckon you should do a full uncut road trip, maybe ~1hr with a fast charge. Melbourne to Geelong perhaps? Better still, live stream it 😮. Could be good content 👌
That's a cool ideal, I'll look into what's involved. Though I'm not sure there would be that many people who would be that interested in tuning in to see me live stream it. 🤷🏻
@@notacarguy_au safely get live chat up on a screen for a Drive & Q&A.
40:30 The car will tell you if there's a head/tail wind! Edit: Which you mentioned at 43:00. Perhaps I should wait until watching the whole thing :)
To be fair, it is a pretty long video. 😂 I think in future, I’ll try to plan them out so I can edit them as a series instead of one long one.
Great video. Very useful. Loved your down to earth attitude.
I have a question though. I just bought Model Y Standard Range RWD here in Netherlands just before the new Model 3 Refresh/highland is launched. Seeing the nee features and better range of new Model 3, i am thinking shall I cancel my Model Y? What do you think? Shall I keep it or shall I cancel it.
I am only thinking of extra range. I am mot concerned of sedan or SUV. Both works for me.
Thank you for the compliment. In regards to your question, it depends on what your driving needs and habits are.
If you find that you do many long drives, like over 300km-400km, then perhaps the long range would be of benefit to you. But if you do mainly city driving and then a long drive every now and them, I think you’ll be fine with the RWD model.
Our experience has been that the RWD model is fine. I’d imagine that you have even more superchargers and fast chargers in Europe than we have here in Australia. Because all the cars charge so fast on the superchargers, we find that we don’t need to charge for more than 10-15 minutes on most long drives. So have not found that having the long range model would have made that much difference.
Of course I’ve never driven a long range model and I may be wrong and it may be better, but the RWD has been fine for us. We just did a 1600km drive this week to Adelaide and back (video coming in about a month) and we didn’t find the charging stops and issue.
In regards to some of the other features of the new Model 3. It’s a challenge, there are some really nice features in the new model. I suppose if you’re not in a hurry to get your car and you think you’d rather have all the new features, then may be better to wait and get the new Model 3, though the current Model Y is still a great car and we love ours? But only you can make that decision. 🤷🏻♂️☺️
@@notacarguy_au Thanks for the perfect answer. Appreciate it!
I am still going ahead with my Model Y.
@@nitishkataria91 No worries, glad I could help. ☺
Do you have rattles in the car or is the mic picking up all the snacks rattling over bumps? Its been my biggest gripe with my Model 3 LR ownership, i love the car and Tesla ecosystem but I had massive bang rattles like surround sound. For example at 52:03
Luckily, I haven't had any real issues with rattles and noises. the noise you heard at 52:03 was me going over a grate or something in the road and yes I did have the box of snacks next to me the whole time and so I'm sure you could hear those from time to time. 🤣
How long have you had your Model 3 and what factory was it built in. I think all our cars in OZ are made in Shanghai and for the most part the build quality has been pretty good. Of course nothing is perfect, but overall I think most of the cars in the last year or so in Oz have been ok.
Very sneaky, leaving out the recharge cost of the final leg, Factor that in ($17 Syd charge up) and it takes Mel to Syd one way trip to around $84.00 actual cost, which makes the EV trip dearer than a decent diesel car. Also, a diesel car will easily go the whole distance without needing to refuel, so no need to make excuses to stop so often, and for so long at each stop. You took near 11hrs, about 2 hours longer than an ICE car needs for the same trip. Most people only need a quick 2 minute dunny stop or two. That extra 2 hrs could be the difference between extreme fatige setting in.
Not sneaky at all. When I got to Sydney I was staying with my cousin and so did a quick top up at shopping centre we had dinner at, as they had a free charger there and finished charing by simply plugging into a normal wall socket at my cousins garage overnight. 🤷🏻
It's a fair point that you could do the trip in a single tank on a diesel and it would be faster. For the one of two times a year that I do a long trip like this, I don't mind it taking a bit longer and having a few breaks along the way. For everyday use, the EV is heaps better than an ICE car.
I think you may be interested in a recent video of mine were I drove up to Sydney with a mate of mine who has a diesel and we discussed his thoughts on the trip.
I will call you out on something. A 2 minute dunny stop? If you can get out of your car, get to the dunny, do what you need to and get back to your car in 2 minutes. At best you're not washing your hands, at worst, you're not drinking nearly enough water. 😜
Does it tell you whether the charger is available or occupied? It would be good if one could book the charger for the approximate time of arrival to the charger
It does tell you how many stalls are in use/free and when the busier times are in general. So, yes it's a pretty good setup.
Haha, I have been watching this video like it was a movie on Netflix. I am constantly learning and preparing for my Y. I was wondering. Can you instantly see the efficiency change, if you dial down the speed from lets say 110 to 105 and sort of play with the efficiency ?
You kinda can. Now that you can see your efficiency in the bottom right hand corner. And I haven't tried this per say, so this is a theory rather than "I know" but I'd assume it may get harder the longer the drive is, as it' even things out.
So you can see right away what you're doing as you're driving. On the converse you also don't get a good indication as you start a drive as it starts really high and then evens out over the first 5km or so. I should probably make a video about it once I understand it better. Would be easier to show, rather than to try and explain here in text. ☺️
Yes you can see live efficiency - it’s a separate tab labelled “consumption” and you can choose a last 10, 25 or 50 Km scale which also gives you a close to live track of your efficiency (5-10 sec delayed)
In march ,in France, the Model Y is first car,6455 in one month!!
Wow! that's incredible. magnifique!
Upvote for use of both padkos and biltong in a car review video!
🤣🙏🏻
The reason your efficiency improved down to 120 Wh/Km from Goulburn (642 m elevation) to Sydney was because you dropped down off the great dividing range and lost significant elevation overall - thus your dramatic improvement in your efficiency - energy put back into battery due to going downhill - or just using less energy overall ie rolling down the hills sort of thing. When you drive the other way - Syd to Goulburn - your efficiency suffers as you climb up the mountain range - energy consumption is much higher as you climb up in elevation and go over the great dividing range prob average more like 180 Wh/Km for the same section.
That a what happened to me when I drove my model y from Syd to Melb.
Yes, I’ve done that drive a couple of times now and noticed that. Thanks for taking the time to comment on it. It must be pretty gradual, as it doesn’t feel like your going down hill that much. 🤣
Hi Brother Excellent experience and Analysis; one missing point: are we doing this for fun or for real living? BJ
Thank you for the kind words. In answer to your question it's a bit of both. This channel is for fun mostly, but for a living I run my own video production company. So the two things mix well together.
@@notacarguy_au Great Guy; you are a real Hero Brother BJ

Bjorn regularly does Tesla 1000km test runs in under ten hours.
I'm certainly no Bjorn. 🤣 He has been doing this a lot longer than me. Also my intention with my channel is to try and present how a person who isn't really that knowledgable about EVs would use an EV.
I think there are lots of really good channels out there that are creating fantastic content and really push the limits to see what is possible. At least for now, that is not my intention for the channel.
I also think Bjorn must have a much bigger bladder than me. 🤣
@@notacarguy_au Bjorn has started including ICE cars as a comparison, the Nissan X-trail e-power e-4orce did it in 8h35m and Kia Ceed PHEV in 9h vs cars like the MS LR in 9h5m or M3LR in 9h20m
Although he did say it was more stressful due to having to rush to use the toilets and eat while driving
It goes to show we aren't quite there in terms of battery storage yet.... too much hassle in having to plan stops every 200km or so....
This video is from over a year ago. 🤷🏻 Also it was my first time doing it and so I was a bit more conservative than I needed to be.
There are already more chargers along the route and you could do it quicker in a long range as my Model Y has the lowest range of any Tesla.
Also, I find that my bladder has less range than the car and I need a potty break every 200km or so anyways. 🤣
And Finally, I didn't plan any stops, the car did it all for me. ☺️
3 hours longer than normal IS that much longer ... You can keep your ev !
Thanks, I well. ☺️

In the referral link, it's only showing model y. Why not model 3 m
Since the new Model 3 was announced Tesla has removed it from the referral programme. Not cool, but it’s their party, their rules. 🤷🏻♂️
47:04 winning 🏆dont cry😢 go pee mate! 😂😂😂
Gets more challenging as I age. 🤣
It's completely odd that service stations don't have the Tesla chargers. They're not losing customers to people with EVs as the people that stop at chargers aren't going to be using petrol anyway but they might like a snack or three - which is where service stations make a fairly large percentage of their dollars.
It is odd, though with the speed that charging stations are being rolled out at the moment, I think things are getting better all the time. I can see why now that for example BP Pulse are putting out chargers they wouldn't want competitors chargers at their stations.
Then again, as you say, they probably make more money from people buying snacks and such at the service station, so maybe they should want all the chargers they can get there no matter who puts in the chargers.
On the other hand, I can see how if you own the service station, you'd want to control the experience. As much as you'd think it wouldn't happen. I can assure you if the chargers aren't working at a service station, even if they aren't owned, controlled or maintained by the service station, folks would get grumpy with the station if the chargers were down. 🤷🏻
In an LFP you are incorrect re charging. Up till just over 90 you stay at a high rate. After that it slows down and there is no point hanging around You are always better to go as soon as you can with enough buffer at the other end.
That's not been my experience though. I'd found the charging really slows down at 80%, now it's entirely possible that it slows down even more at 90%. 🤣 But yes, I agree that ideally I would get to chargers with a low state of charge so that I can optimise my charge on long trips like this.
Things will get better once we have more chargers at better spacings. But even now, things aren't that challenging.
Haha I tried to report that loose charging cable a few weeks back in Euroa, but Tesla have no official way of reporting issues.
I like the suggestion of 'play games while you wait' . Hadn't seen that one before
Alright last comment 😂 Awesome video mate, appreciate the incredible effort you go to with filming+editing. You are very good on camera, great at explaining things, whilst keeping it light and entertaining.
I'm not sure it's just there. I think I managed to drop the other cable at everyone I tried. May be my clumsy hands. 🤣
Aww shucks. Thanks Ryan. 😊 I just finished editing this week's one which is the return journey.
I think in future I am going to try script/plan these better so I can break them up into 2 or 3 parts.
Why do Tesla owners seem to think non-Tesla owners don’t know how to use adaptive cruise control? Believe it or not many brands have had most Tesla ‘features’ for many years and are not new or innovative. Charging is a massive negative in Australia. There is one Supercharger where I live (which I wouldn’t need as I’d have a home charger) and nothing at all, Tesla or non, in the two towns I need to visit regularly which are 220km & 320km away from me. I MIGHT make the shorter one return on one full charge, but couldn’t afford to do any local driving. The other is a no-no. Additionally, there are no chargers ‘on the way’ to either destination. Apart from the initial cost, THIS is why many people in Oz won’t buy a BEV. I also don’t have to use a computer to ‘plan’ my trip around refuelling because I know there are service stations everywhere I want to go. I’m not against electric cars but I am against battery electric cars because they cannot compete with existing products and infrastructure.
You make a lot of good points. I can see that for your particular situation it may not be the ideal solution.
Not sure where you get needing to use a computer to calculate your journey as most EV's have a built in computer or system that does it for you, as you see in this video.
Absolute agree that the infrastructure needs to be better, which it is getting better all the time. I may argue though that most Australians, live in cities and perhaps do a long road trip once or twice per year. So for day to day use electric cars make perfect sense for many people, no?
I don't know how high the density of the SUC is with you, but for my taste you are far too often on the SUC with a battery that is too "full". If your focus is on fast charging, I recommend driving at least below 10% (more towards zero if possible) to an SUC, as far as this is possible.
What does SUC mean?
@@notacarguy_au super charger (Tesla charging)
@@MemphisMG86 Ok that's makes a bit more sense. In regards to your advice, the challenge is that the spacing of the chargers here doesn't really allow that. They are either too close or too far apart.
I realise that may be the ideal way to do things but I am not trying to show how things work in an ideal situation, I am rather trying to show folks how things work in a typical situation. Hope that makes sense. ☺
Remember, you have to add about $25 to the cost for Victorian EV road tax
Don't get me started on that topic. 😳

That's pretty cool. I do use rooftop solar at home which is great. I know some people want to barrel through and go straight, but I like the fact that I need to stop and stretch my legs every few hours.

@@notacarguy_au 😎 great!
"promosm"
Sorry, I don't understand. Is that something that I said in the video?
In the realms of a Hybrid car, we just fill the petrol tank and lead a life that is beyond charging. Our trips are usually a couple of hours shorter and cost quite similar.
And in case you thought you were being green / enviroconcious, well, let me remind you that 70 percent of electricity that is used to charge the cars is generated by coal in Australia.
Congratulations on the inconvenience for nothing.
Thanks for your feedback. Not that it matters but 96.3625523% of my usual charge comes for free off my solar panels. 🤷🏻♂️
I’m glad you’re enjoying your vehicle. 👍🏻
@@notacarguy_au That's brilliant. Buy a car that's expensive when compared to it's hybrid equivalent in the first place and then get a solar panel to run the car, and then assume that there were no costs associated with running them. Very Smart.
@@prasadkolluri4877 I'm curios Prasad, you clearing aren't a fan of electric cars or renewables, yet you've taken time to watch a video, a rather long video, about an EV road trip and then taken even more time to write, edit, comment and respond to my comment here. Why?

You know what was not mentioned!!! Road Tax on ev per kms. This ads 25$ to the trip
Don’t get me started on that. 🤦🏻♂️
There is a court case going on for that.. hopefully gets abolished 👍
And how much would it cost for the trip in an ICE car? People seem to forget that ICE vehicles get charged a road tax too, it's called fuel excise, the difference is that it is hidden in the price of fuel and is per litre
ZLEV=2.7c/km
Fuel Excise=47.7c/litre
That works out that for litre an ICE car uses an EV can drive 17.5km for the same cost, or for every 100km an ICE car requires an efficiency of 5.7L/100km to pay what an EV will
I live in NSW so no ZLEV yet(but is coming), but even if I did, to visit my grandparents 221km away it would cost me as low as just $12 round trip(using free chargers/solar)
I drive about 100km a week, so "fuel" would be $2.70 a week or if charging at home on peak rates a staggering $9 using the avg 15.1kwh/100km overall efficiency from the video and rounding up
@@brandonokeeffe1193 It's going to be interesting how costs work out going forward.
I appreciate this isn't for all people, but for a lot of people at the moment, they charge at home with cheaper timed rates, or like us "free" solar. Of course there was the install cost, but that's been spent anyways.
I think what would be fairest would be a usage fee for all vehicles depending on their usage or something. Luckily, I am not in charge and so don't have to work it out. 🤣
