Today we're finally looking at the SmplTrek's 3 global audio tracks. From what I can tell, the internet has been mostly quiet about this feature, which is a real shame because it's amazing! The three global audio tracks feature 3 takes within, letting you splice the best bits of each take. They ALSO adhere to the length settings per scene, not clip, so you have a ridiculously long amount of recording time if you want it! Enjoy the video :)

It would be a nice feature if one of the instrument tracks could be used to record to a global track. I occasionally jam on an instrument track, and wish I could capture the jam as a track

It's pretty great!
Verslab has ot with those 16 vocal takes, limited to 6 minutes stereo, 12 mono across all 16. Can stack as many as you want and repeat throughout as often as you want to get more out of the budget. You can also sample into those takes from external or a bunch of combinations from the tracks or mix down, or resample from the 16 takes. The 7 tracks can be setup as either drum kits or chromatic samples or synth, also chord and style mode. And 2 of the tracks can be set as audio looper. At first sampling into the verselab felt tedious but there are a few shortcuts to make it smoother and quicker. These are very flexible machines, verselab is 600 often and comes with the vocal processor and a whole mastering suite including a limiter. It can be setup for performance similar to.a sp model. Have you tried the verselab?

@@FreeBeat yeah the VL... has a lot of plus's but is largely overlooked because of some issues that Roland are unlikely to improve now.
I think the smpltrek is what the OP-1 should have been...
I’ve said it before-why is the Smpltrek not getting more attention. It is phenomenal for the money.
It really is, a few more updates and it'll be absolutely insane!
Everything the Doc and team come up with, is powerful, and reasonably priced. So far, I have 8bit warps, and xfm. I'm about to give in to the SmplTrek.
Not knowing much about it .. sounds terrible to me.

Ay bro that's some masterful snapping👌this sampler didn't interest me at first but I've been nerding out on videos lately. With those global tracks this does seem like a great tool for a songwriter/lyricists..

@Free Beat well I pulled the trigger and bought one. I like how you put that..songwriting platform.. do you thunk this thing offers any advantages as far as songwriting vs the mpc. I'm definitely familiar with the mpc so I know it's loaded, I own one.. is the work flow quick? Although small the smpltrek seems pretty deep as far as features and menus which isn't always a good.
I might grab one when iv got the cash kinda reminds me of a digitak or something the lofi12 version looks pretty cool too
My Nunomo Qun mk2 is going to be a really great external voice inside the SmplTrek, that breaks samples into sequenced grains, mixes those, if needed, with good sounding standard subtractive shaped osc's, then feeds them into SmplTreks stereo input, to be sampled again, and re-sequenced. .

It’s funny you bring this up! My Korg Kronos has 16 track audio recording and every daw like tools you would need to record an entire album! Yet I have never seen a single video on this subject! With SD card the SP404 mk2 has 64 gigs with 16 tracks, not a single video on it. Other than them I have an 8 track and 16 track recorders but I’m recording, even voice on cubase3 on the IPad. With Aum, there’s there’s just more available that way. It’s all good for song writing but, I’m speaking for myself here, it’s all hooked up! Why do it twice. Just my opinion of why we don’t use these awesome tools.

After watching this video, I am SO glad I bought an SP-404mk2 for more or less the same price.
Well the 404mk2 is $600 and the Smpltrek is $400 haha. But in my opinion, they are designed for incredibly different uses. The 404 is a sampler focused beat making device, where the Smpltrek is a songwriters companion. Glad you're happy with your purchase though!
@@FreeBeat Not in Europe... The SP-404mk2 is 499 euros, the Smpltrek is 542 euros (no haha). The SP404 is a fantastic sampler definitely focused beat making even though I play my guitar that I plug into the SP and use the myriad of effects that way. The Smpltrek is a jack of all trades but excels at nothing really. I'm afraid that's why nobody wants it or talks about it even in the US where it is so much cheaper. I hope they pay you well to increase their sells because it's no easy feat.

I wanted to buy smpltrek one year ago, but back in time it was impossible to buy it in my country so I bought 404 mk2 and it turned out to be a huuuge disappointment to me. I dont wanna say that it is a bad piece of gear in general, but for my purposes i found it totally useless. Now I got smpltrek as I wanted to, and now I can definetely say that I see it (at least for me personally) as almost perfect device. It's all about your purposes

So, do you think that the three global tracks could be used as a three-track live looper? i haven't really played around with them yet, myself, and there could be major wowza on the horizon If there was any functionality for recording into GT1, pushing stop and having GT1 playing back again from the beginning, while your audio was still audible to play over the GT1 or record on GT2, etc.... A pipe dream? IT seems like all this would be more effective as a looper, than having to set the number of measures per loop beforehand on the regular tracks that you record, as no other looper on the market works this way for good reason 🤷♂️🌌
I'd imagine they could probably implement something like that in the future, but these tracks span the length of the ENTIRE song, with no way to change that. This is definitely a songwriting device haha.

I always scope out the luggage and purse sections of thrift atores when im looking for a case. If u want new walmart has some solid cases by their stationary section sometimes. U could obviously check out music sites if budget is not a concern.

You could do the same with Albeton live but you need a laptop, Or you could record the scenes into a lopper and do it that way if you wanna play live with a keyboard.

This thing isn’t really a sampler or Groovebox. It’s a songwriters portable studio.
A tascam for the 21st century, with built in Groovebox and sampler.
Although you can do the same with a Maschine plus (not with an MPC unfortunately), the SmplTrek is a lot cheaper and more portable.
Can you elaborate more on that. Especially the mpc cannot do it part.

Exactly. I think that's why so many folks were let down by it. It's not a sampler really at all. It's for actually sketching full songs! Such an incredible device, nothing quite like it.

The workflow seems weird to me but glad ya liking it, that screen seems a lil small for how much it’s needed like the Circuit tracks seems to click more but sampling looks better here
Yeah I'm really loving it. As soon as I realized it's not really a sampler and more of a songwriting workstation I completely fell in love with it!

Yes! You need the right cable though. It doesn’t take power in from the USB port, so you need a cable that converts 5v USB to the 12v barrel jack that the SmplTrek needs

Actually a sampler which samples.... like the good old samplers, but those had bad audio quality.
Funny how roland implemented all this.years ago in their mvs. Its slow but fewture wise it was never beaten even today the new sps is just a amateur device in comparison.

Albetion has one benefit that SmpTrek does not, which is midi Which means you can change chords with a keystep, cannot do that with Audio tracks. I don't like the styles my keyboards has it cheating as far as i can see. I like to make my own beats.
