Your explanation and techniques have helped me learn sudoku from basic to "quite advanced" stage and am still watching, learning and practicing.
After watching both parts of video for Empty Rectangle, I have a suggestion- instead of bringing in various shapes we can simply say that if a small number comes in only one row AND one column in a block- this covers all your shapes and with this look out in explanation, both parts may get condensed in one video and I feel much easier to look for.
    Thanks, Rajeev from Mumbai.

This was so helpful, thank you. Every explanation of empty rectangle I’ve seen has explained the logic of why, once you’ve found the pattern, you can eliminate a candidate, but you’re the first I’ve found to explain what to look for to actually identify them.

This is a beautiful tutorial for this advanced technique, which I was struggling to master.
As a non-native english speaker, the terminology “empty rectangle” sounds pretty queer, but after this tutorial I’m remembering this as “LlTt+” (big & small L, big & small t, and a plus”) and ... oh now I’m spotting them so clearly. Thanks again and pls keep posting your fantastic tutorials !

The two numbers in the conjugate pair form one side of the rectangle (the two 5's in the top row of the image shown before you start playing this video). One of the numbers in the "SHAPE" is the third corner of the rectangle (the 5 in the top row of the middle square in the image referred to above). The number that forms the 4th corner of the rectangle can be eliminated (the 5 in the red square in the image shown before you play this video). Thus only 3 of the 4 corners of the rectangle remain. Hence the 'empty rectangle'.

I'm guessing but fairly sure this technique is called the 'empty rectangle' because it is a proof that a candidate number cannot go into one of the 4 corner tiles that make up a rectangle of tiles that the candidate number otherwise can go into in each corner. In other words, the candidate number can potentially go into only three of the four corner tiles of the rectangle.

In your example, what if the Y and Z are also conjugate pairs so that Z can now be X, and Z be X? The Z certainly has to be eliminated? Please advise. Thanks

In this example, the Z could also be an X, right? Or am I seeing it wrong?

One has to be extremely patient for there is just too much repetition.

That is because I am a teacher and know from experience new players in particular need this technique. of repeating. Thanks for your comment. You are obviously an experienced player. Many new players somehow go this advanced puzzle before learning from the beginning.

You confused me with the positions between 6:22 and 6:28. Why are you emphasising a difference between them?

I was confused by the concept of the 'empty rectangle' before I watched this video. I am now completely lost. I'm not even sure what I'm meant to be learning, it's never explained. I'm not 'hating' on the video but can someone please tell me what I'm missing here.

Let’s make the 5 in the red square and the 5 in the yellow square the conjugate pair. The red square is now “X” and the blue square is now “Z”. Now make the new “X” true. Now all the 5’s in the “T” are false.
Same thing if you make the 5 below the “T” the “X” and the 5 to the left of the “T” the “Z”. All 5’s in the “T” are false if "X" is true.
Why would the 5 above the “T” be “X” and not the 5 to the right of the “T”?????

Never mind. I've spent time trying to work this out in my mind (and on paper) and I now understand it.
I love your tutorials, but I think more time should have been spent working the conjugate pair forward and backwards. In this example, the "Z" square could ,in fact, be the "X" square. The system still works.
I didn't really grasp it till I saw Tutorial #72 and at down and worked it out on my own. I think there just wasn't enough numbers on the board, (In tutorial #71) for it to make much sense to me.
I have been a Quality assurance Tech and Mgr. for over 40 years. I've been building computers since 1986. Too little information means too much room for error. I see too many options, and too many directions.
I've been working Sudoku in the paper and in books for many years. Learned on my own, and never knew of most of these patterns you teach.
The simpler ones, like the matching pairs, were easy to figure out on my own years ago.
Since I've been watching your videos, the time to solve puzzles has been greatly reduced and I am now working harder puzzles.
    Thank You.
Love your videos, Robin. Keep up the good life.
