/// The story of the song "Karagym-ay" / "My dear". Lyrics written by Sariev Shomishbay. Music written by Duysekeev Kenes. Poet Sariev dedicates these poems to his daughter, who is getting married. In the poems, the poet conveys his feelings about how the life of his daughter will turn out with her chosen one. Father shares thoughts on the meaning of life with his daughter. In his opinion, the main meaning of life is Love. Without love, life is empty. The poet asked a friend, composer Duisekeev, to write music for his poems. The composer remembered his only sister who died when she was 19 years old. She didn't get married. That's why the song also feels the pinching sadness of the failed love.
/// Dimash performed the song "Karagym-ay" on April 9, 2016 at a concert dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the composer Kenes Duisekeev. The composer was surprised by how Dimash was able to understand and convey the deep meaning of the song, despite his young age (Dimash was 21 at the time.). After the performance of the song, the composer applauded Dimash with the words BRAVO!!!"
/// Composer Kenes Duysekeev was Dimash's teacher at the university. He died on July 9, 2020 from Covid-19.
/// It's a pity that Maestro Kenes Duisekeyev will never hear this particular performance. A completely new interpretation compared to Dimash' performance on April 9, 2016 at the composer's anniversary. In the current performance, each word is colored with musical colors, intonations, feeling. The song, at first glance, is simple and has several verses, without choruses. Each verse begins with the same words "Karagym-a-а-а-а-аy" ("My dear"). But there are so many accents, and each verse sounds SO different, that I personally perceive this performance as a requiem, crying for a departed irretrievably good man.
/// Dimash sang this song in 2016, when he was 21 years old. Please watch the clip with a good sound (English subtitles) czcams.com/video/Pu2g1_P60Bs/video.html

Not a new song but a new arrangement of Qaragym-ai, (apple of my eye) you need to know the reason why he did this for the 60th Anniversary KazakhConcert. His University Professor (Dimash is still a student (Phd)) Kenes Duysekeev died from covid-19 in the first wave in Kazakhstan and Dimash was very close to him, very fond of him, so it hit him very hard. He wanted to do this as a tribute to him and to rearrange the song to show the respect Dimash had for this very talented teacher, composer, poet and very nice man. Kenes composed this song 20 years ago about the apple of his eye, his sister who passed away, the poet wrote the words about his daughter, also the apple of his eye, that went away to be married and he had to say goodbye to her, so a terribly sad song, and when Dimash first asked if he could perform this song when he was around 18/19 Kenes doubted that at such a young age Dimash would be able to put across the meaning and intense emotions in this song, so he asked Dimash to sing it for him beforehand. When he heard and saw how Dimash could absolutely put across the deep meanings and emotions he was very happy to give him the song to perform. This newly arranged performance is in my opinion a triumph, Dimash's perfect vocals are heartbreakingly beautiful and just having a piano, perfect ❤
Interview with Karagym-Ay song composer, Kenes Duisenkeev
In 2016, my 70th anniversary was celebrated right here in Astana. It was decided that it would take place in the concert hall Kazakhstan.
Then Dimash Kudaibergen came to me and said, "Kenes aga," how do you look at it when I performe the song Karagym-Ay?! In fact, I already invited another singer to perform this song. But I didn't want to disappoint the boy. I thought he was a talented boy who had just gotten to his feet, so I didn't say no, but said, prepare yourself for the performance. In two days, a rehearsal will take place in the concert hall Kazakhstan, on the day of the concert day, you will come and i will hear your performance.
Dimash finished performing, I didn't notice when I got up and called Dimash. Come here dear, come here and I hugged him.
I hugged him and said, God gave you not only a voice but also a heart and, most importantly, wisdom. I didn't think a young boy who wasn't even 20 could understand the philosophical depth of this song. In fact, he realized all my thoughts on this song.

    Qaraǵym-aı
    Light of my Eyes!
Our life is truly like a flash
    Illuminated only by a dream
My beauty! You, like a shy doe,
On the verge of uncharted dangers.
    How will fate treat you?
Oh, Moonface! Life cannot be stopped!
    You flip through her pages
And if there is not a single line about Love in it,
It is not worth the paper it is written on.
My treasure! Look at her beauty!
    Isn't she worthy of love?
Such perfection is not in vain!
My beauty! If you are not worthy of love
    If you are not loved
This World is really an empty place ...

    KARAGIM AY / MY DEAR
More than 25 years ago, the poet Shomishpay Sariev wrote the lyrics of the song “Karagym Ay”. He wanted to dedicate a song to his daughter, who was getting married. The father puts his feelings and thoughts into the lyrics: how will the life of his daughter and her chosen one turn out, what awaits her?
Talks with his daughter about the meaning of life. The poet points out, that the most important meaning of life is love. Life without love is empty. All the wealth accumulated over a lifetime is not worth even one day spent in love.
The poet askes his friend, the famous composer Kenes Duisekeev, to write the music for the lyrics. The composer writes the music for the song, recalls his only sister, who did not have time to get married, because she died at the age of 19.
Imagines what kind of feelings the father would have experienced if he married her to a man. Therefore, the song turned out not only about the poet’s daughter, who is getting married, but also about the composer's sister, who did not live up to her wedding. The song conveys sadness, the sadness of love which never had a chance to live. (Credits to Dimash Multicultural Club on Facebook)
Kenes Duisekeev wasn’t only his teacher/mentor he was a grandfatherly friend for Dimash too. In the ~40 minutes interview with Dimash on Dimash‘s CZcams channel he is talking about him. (Btw in my opinion the best interview with Dimash) You feel the pain and grief of Dimash in everything, the voice, the face expressions... it must have been really tough to get through.
He sings this song so beautifully... in part like a grieving human, and in part like an angel giving someone a sendoff to heaven.

A precious friend who sang in our choir with us for many years, our "ringer", developed lymphoma a few years ago. He sang for all the church funerals as his voice was the most comforting and angelic. When he passed, of course we all sang for him. I never knew how cathartic it would be. It was as though we were able to give our friend a gift we never knew we had in us. Although Dimash is so saddened by his loss, I pray he felt that he was able to "gift' his teacher and friend in a way no one else could. I hope that makes sense.

Good evening to you Caleb COLES;The song performed by Dimash KUDAIBERGEN , Qaraǵym a is so beautiful, melodious, the clarity of his voice and the power that he exudes, when appears several times, the portrait of this man I do not know, just like you. the choice of the piano brings all the sensitivity of the words it expresses. The emotion is so present and vivid that it is not difficult to understand that it is a profound and sincere tribute that he gives to this person. In this case, language is not a barrier, only a contribution of musical and vocal riches, available to all, simply by listening to and appreciating pure talent, music conveys, in itself enormous intensity and voluptuousness, to the point of giving us chills and an indescribable global feeling. Congratulations to the artist! Take good care of yourself, protect yourself from the Covid 19 and good end of the day to you, Franck from France.

In an interview Dimash said that this professor was one of his most treasured teachers, had taught him as much about life as he had about music. Dimash worked with him for several years and they were very close. As for the song, the title has been translated as "My Beloved". It was written on the eve of the professor's daughter's marriage. The lyricist also had a daughter who was to be married, but at the age of 19, she died before the wedding took place. So the lyrics are sad, speaking about how life can be too short and it's better to have spent one day of love than to spend a lifetime accumulating things. It's heartbreaking at the best of times. Singing for this 60th anniversary of the Kazahkconcert, I don't know how Dimash got through this performance.

Now beginning his Doctorate and still does not consider himself worthy of such honor as he gives them.

This is the instructor that Dimash would call long distance for advice. He was very, very close to him and looked up to him. It was COVID and the loss was very hard on Dimash. I am convinced the video he did where he catches on fire had to do with his professor's death. They show the man playing the piano falling over dead and I think it represented his professor. That is just my take. It could be totally off.

Thanks Caleb. Your observations are very true. The song has a poignant theme about loss & uncertain future, for family & ones we love, from parent to their child. But Dimash is able to express this across generations. Its timeless, and seems relevant for loss & uncertainty we are going through now with COVID.

I love this... Just lost my mom, and she will always be my "Quaragym ai". I like the other video cos of the pianist.. my mom played piano, and when she dissapear in the video..it's like my mom. She is gone.. but the music, memories still goes on... I think Dimash is even more emotional in the other too..

hi Caleb, Beautiful reaction to this very emotional performance (for Dimash). Your info was all correct, Dimash lost two mentors to covid in Jun/July this one his beloved music teacher who composed the song, the words were based on a poem written by a friend of his teacher whose daughter died at the age of 19. This is not a new song Dimash performed this at a concert in 2016, held to celebrate his teachers 60th birthday ... (that is on YT also) this time a much sadder time and held in an empty theatre. 👌👌👌👌😢😊
