WHY DOES YOUR DOG ONLY LISTEN WHEN YOU HAVE TREATS?
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 16. 11. 2021
- Using positive reinforcement to teach behaviors is one of the BEST training techniques you can use. What happens when your dog stops listening once you go into reality? This is something a lot of dog owners struggle with. Tom Davis breaks down what to do with a dog who won't listen without treats.

As always THANK YOU for watching, In every video I answer every one of your dog training questions so don't forget to leave your dog training questions in the comments below!
Iâve started off in positive only/force free mindset, but over time As I did there methods, especially towards reactivity, it really didnât add up putting a mini gun of treats in his mouth when ever he looks at me for a second. Me being open minded to seeing the other side of everything led me to people like you, and a few other good balance trainers and this week I started using the prong using your mindset and Iâve already got more progress with my dog then the months of the force free reactivity methods. My relationship feels stronger with my dog and he hasnât even resource guard since Iâve moved to the mindset of understanding the difference of not understanding and willful disobedience. An ideology of no stress does not over run how a animals processes things and even communicates among themselves! I wish I could take part in becoming a student of you or someone with your mindset and understanding . Thank you for the clarity you gave me!
I've done exactly the same and feel the same way. Which other trainers do you watch?
@@laurak0110 Larry khron, and shield k-9⊠they both also go really in depth and they also keep it real no matter what!

It's fun and a lot of us are as enthusiastic as you are about training.
@@Depressed_Dinosaur I think I will! It canât cost more then the purely positive online school I now owe $3,000 dollars for after leaving.
As a husky owner, my dog also listens only on the âfifth Tuesday of the third of the yearâ
I feel ya. Us husky owners have patience of a god. Lol
Dude! Huskies are so good natured, but my husky only does what HE wants to do, but he usually just want to be the goodest boyđ
Bribery and distraction with treats is sadly recommended to lots of dog owners and it will get them nowhere. Long-term behaviour change requires clear communication - both positive reinforcement AND negative consequences. đ
I don't see anything wrong with using treats in training, but you need to phase them out or you'll be cutting up hotdogs for the rest of your life. ;)
@@EvelineUK im perfectly fine with that honestly. i'd like to pay my dog for doing things i ask him.
@@meganmay2008 Sure. But 'payment' doesn't have to look the same all the time. I doubt your dog will get a food reward every time he sits when asked for the rest of his life. ;)
@@EvelineUK how do we phase out? Asking for myself...a first time dog owner of an almost 5 month old puppy?
@@Godiscoming888 By not using treats for every time you mark the behaviour as good. If at first you do that every time, then start doing it every other time, every third, etc.
As a golden retriever owner I can understand the âIâll do everything I know for that treatâ mindset from the dog. We have moved to toys and collar pressure to help reinforce the obedience.
I agree, when my golden was 6 months old I only used treats for training and he did not want to do anything if I didn't have a treat.
Ugh, I can't stand how much I freaking love Lakota's guest appearances!!!! â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
That consistency and not begging the dog is so important!!!
I love the take away of keeping your voice consistent (along with consistency in giving the commands). Another nugget to take from this great video and add to the repertoire. Thanks, Tom!
Hope it helps, Susan!
Trainers like you gave me the confidence to actually correct my dog when she was choosing not to listen. This opened up so much for us both, and now she listens without the bribe of food always being at the end. There are still rewards, and a lot of work left to do, but now I'm confident that we're on the right path with our relationship and our training
I have two huskies, a 10.5 month and a 5 month old so Iâm definitely into a lot of training. These videos have been helping so much!! So grateful for you and what you do here, man.
Wow two young Huskies...you definitely have your hands full. They are beautiful dogs.
Godspeed. (from a fellow husky owner)
Hey fellow husky person! We got our two huskies just a few months apart, too. Glad you found balanced dog training faster than we did. We're very pleased with them now.
I have a few huskies! Great dogs đ
I have a VERY food motivated dog, and I agree that when he wants something else, it doesn't matter what food we have. Definitely a great example of how balanced training works for even non-reactive dogs. Love it!
i love this video! the owner is so calm and patient, you can tell she wants to learn. rudy is adorable!
The lady asks questions quite rationally and knows her dog very well. Great video.
Love the comparison to horsemanship. Iâve been riding//training horses most of my life and have been able to apply a lot of my horse training knowledge with training my dogs
I too (not knowing better) started with a positive reinforcement trainer. I now have a big dog who is reactive (to other dogs). I've watched & learned so much from your videos! I've been able to connect with a balanced trainer who is helping me use the tools (Herm-Springer prong, 280C Dogtra e-collar) to teach me how to help my dog be balanced. Thank you for your expertise & sharing
Beautiful dog, I bet Tom was thrilled. A young looking Thompson. đ„°
Anytime someone comes to me for training, they were positive only. Their dogs by this point are bite cases, rehab, last chance and out of control. If there is no balance, you get chaos. Thanks for being a real trainer and an amazing example. What I wouldn't give to have mentored under you. When I first started out over a decade ago, I was a positive only student, graduate. But then I got into the real world and dogs do not work that way. They need structure, discipline, proper affection and standards.
Been using a prong for a few weeks now just 2-3 times a week and it's amazing how much of a difference it's made!
Howâs it doing now Iâm definitely thinking of getting a prong
Lost my two teenaged large dogs 11 months apart. Got a 3yo boy from the shelter who looks like maybe a Belgian Shepherd mix. Very sweet, great with kids, and loves to walk. Biggest issues are people with little yapping dogs who allow them to come at him aggressively, and squirrels. I could cut up $40 of raw steak and he would pay zero attention to it in these situations. Also, when he's distracted and I have him sit, not only will he not engage with or look at me, he turns his head away. Just recently saw Tom use a prong with a buckle, which is going to be a lifesaver for me. No grip strength (neck thing), so my collar isn't very effective because it has to be loose enough to slip over his head. Love these videos.
So helpful seeing adult dogs being trained to listen and obey with and without food!
Structure structure structure from day 1. Every dog needs and deserves that.
What a big guy! The owners just needed a little guidance, they clearly want the best for him, so sweet!
Wooohoooo Rudy got a tune up and you can see even HE is glad it happened. More balanced, less anxiety đ„°
What you were saying is totally true about how if someone does it a touch different the dog will push boundaries
Love seeing you working with this breed! Always a good day when a new video drops!
Listened to two of your podcasts on my way to hike a long mountain trail today and it made the drive go by in a zip. Looooove this content!
Once again, excellent explanation of the use of tools and how to correct when needed. What a beautiful big boy! Well done Tom. Keep up the great work.â€ïž
My dog really only listens when I treats are involved. Iâve been debating on whether or not to get a prong collar. Iâm watching your vids and others before I get one so Iâm well informed.
Love these videos! So much real world help for my 1 year old GSD and I. Love all the love you give the dogs, but also keeping them accountable! It just makes sense
So glad I found this channel! It has changed my entire training philosophy!
Love how you always start with the basics, then move to the individual needs.
These videos continue to keep me focused on training and learning more about dogs and how to be a better owner. Thank you for continuing to educate dog owners !
Thanks for the video Tom! I can relate to the issues this dog owner is having so I really appreciate the help.
Thanks for another great video! My GSD is similar in that he would love to greet most humans and pups that we pass. Having him offer me his attention/focus in these situations is the best feeling!
Been watching your videos for a while now, and have learned a lot. Owe it to you for how well our German Shepherd is doing, and we didnât have to take him to any classes. Your videos genuinely helped me grow and discover things I never knew - not only about my dog - but about myself as well. Quality content!
That consistency is KEY and being able to be short and direct with what you are wanting your dog to do!!!!
Thank you for your videos! Youâre great at breaking down the what, when, how and why of dog training. I learn something new with each video.
This video definitely helped me understand what IM doing wrong - appreciate you !!!
I've been watching your excellent videos for over a year now and learning so much from the best of the best, Subscribed and clicking the thumbs up every time. Thanks very very much Tom
Your training has made a world of difference in my relationship with my dog. Thank you.
Great video on dealing with large, strong dogs that just want to be friends with everyone because that's their nature being baby-sitting breeds.
The way you explain things is fantastic!
Iâm getting a bullmastiff puppy this week and I am super excited to get started training him using your videos!!! Awesome job Rudy
I genuinely appreciate you putting out these videos for free; you took my training ability to a whole new level, and my dog and I have a beautiful relationship now.
Love how you explain behaviour modification in an easy to understand way. Thank you
Tom you are a one of a kind human being
Ive got a 6 month old Giant Schnauzer from a working line, and these videos have been such a great resource with helping create a system that works for my family and the newly added puppy. That no bad dogs edition e collar would be a GREAT tool to have! Thanks for all you do!
I just have to tell you that you are my favorite trainer. You are just amazing with all those dogs, I see myself with many of the issues these dogs are having and they way you train them and the turn around in them blows my mind. I have been watching all your videos and applying these techniques on my recent rescue Ruby. Thanks so much for these videos and helping all these dogs that wouldnât have a chance if it werenât for you.
These videos are always great reminders on what we should be doing! Sometimes you just forget and need a little tune up.
You have been a life saver . I was at the end of the rope with my dog and you're methods are just phenomenal
Love seeing other large breeds! Thanks for another great video Tom. Super relatable and helpful!
Your videos have shown and inspired me to start my own dog training business! I started watching because I got a new dog (German Shepard/huskey mix) . I started watching before I got her and applied all your tactics to build my relationship with her. You donât just show how to train a dog but you show us how dogs communicate. Calm and assertive. Youâre great and your videos are the best!
Building that foundation of structure and obedience before you need it was nicely conveyed. A relationship and bond that will grow moving forward.
Thanks Tom, I always learn something new.
Such a beautiful work being carried out. I've been learning so much from your videos! Thank you so much!
Love your videos! Thanks for being an inspiration!
Another great video! I've learned so much from your videos in the last new years. Thanks for the chance Tom!
Thankyou for making free videos like this, helped me so much on my belgian malinois!
Rudyâs owner did great with him. Love how your direct yet gentle way of reaching. Great video again!
Love the explanations you give each owner.
Another excellent video!! Always look forward to your vids. Thanks Tom and Crew!!
I'm really grateful for your videos. We still have a lot to work on with our gsd, but thanks to you our walks are no more a nightmare with the prong collar. It changed our relationship for better .
I've been watching your videos for over a year, and was so happy to see this video. Having a 120 anatolian Pyrenees mix that wants to say hi to everyone, this video is so relatable to me. The herm springer has worked wonders this past year, and our communication on walks is great. Like you said, when you have a big dog, the world expects more from them. Misbehavior is treated differently between small and large dogs. I think Augustus my pup, understands that if he's well behaved, people will come say hi to him.
yay for consistency! another great video
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you!
Great stuff! You are helping me a lot with my dog
The owners were awesome! Super receptive.
As a new dog owner this video helps me build a good foundation for both our training and relationship! I appreciate it very much since my dog is just about the same size and has the aforementioned behaviour problems! So thank you very much!
Always such fantastic information! This has been great for my two standard poodles!
These videos are always so helpful even if my dog doesn't have some of these issues it's always great to be able to add to my training knowledge.
Love to see you work and dedication! Thank you for helping me work with my best friend
I have watched your videos for about two years now since I got my first GSD and I canât thank you enough. I now have two and are pretty well trained. When I feel Iâm like Iâm not doing something right I look up your videos and rewatch them. To make sure that Iâm doing it right. Thanks again!
Your videos have helped me be a better hooman so my dog is a calmer dog
Thanks Tom for another great video!
My Presa Canario does this exact thing. Listens perfect when treats are out and then goes deaf when I put them away. Thanks for touching on this topic!
Great video Tom! We watch your videos all the time to help us be better leaders for our pup.
So glad you touched on how to get away from treats when the dog only listens when treats are present. Having reinforcement when the dog blows you off is a huge thing most people don't understand. Love how you break everything down for people to understand.
Appreciate the balanced training!
You have open my mind about prongs, Tom. Thank you for explain the correct way of use.
Love it! I'm allways learning from your videos âșïž
Again Tom is a great mentor for not only the dogs but their humans. His advice has helped me help other people understand and communicate with their dog, so thank you Tom Davis. Would also love to have one of your collars to show other and explain how it could benefit them.
I am learning so much with your videos!
Love how in your intro your black shirt is COVERED in dog hair! I just imagine you cuddling with the dogs after a good training session.
What a great Friday evening, a new video from Tom, yes!
Love the content, man. Keep it up
Fantastic video as always!!!
Such a good boy!
These are always great reminders â€ïž
Skill and consistency. Great video
This is such a great video and has helped so much with my pup!
What a good boy! your vids has given me a new perspective and I can't thank you enough, definitely shows that proper use of tools and handling makes a big difference. I just got a new furry buddy (australian shepherd) and our training has been kept inside the house and the backyard due to her not having all her shots yet BUT I think that all this mental training (and your vids) will really set her up well to when we take our first walk outside...hopefully.
Amazing workđđ»đđ»
these videos have been so helpful thank you!
Beautiful dog! As always great video!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and showing us how not everything should be positive only.
Thank you so much for your videos!
Love your videos!!!!!! You work so well with dogs
Hey Tom, thanks so much for the video and information. I love the content so keep the videos coming!
Thank you! Good reminders and a detailed breakdown of pressure/release times.
Been watching your CZcams videos and I have a 11 month old shepherd/husky mix and been lucky enough to say I have been with her since she was 2 weeks old. I started training her around 8 weeks and have fell in love with dog training, your videos have taught me so much and made my connection with her that much closer! I am excited to keep learning the art of training and to see how far I can go with my dog!!
It is so good to see these tools be used right, and the positive effect it has on the dog! its amazing. My malinois's life has changed after I've switched to a prong! Would love to e-collar train her too for off leash reliability :)
