In Philip South Dakota there's a wagon that broke down along the original Oregon trail. It's fenced-in On a ranchers property not open to the public. We were cutting wheat on the property next to it and he showed us the wagon and another area that was fenced off that was muddy ruts that was also fenced-off where the wagons traveled!
That must have been really cool to see. I remember being on the edge of an old field as a kid, found several old glass bottles from the 1800s. Neatest thing I'd seen at that point. The farmer let us keep them. They had no monetary value, but I've still got the one I was given. That was back in 1988, I was 8yo
Wagon trains typically traveled 15 to 20 miles a day-less if they had to cross a mountain or a river.

Hell of a way to go west,WALKING!to have walked from the East Coast to California was something only the young and determined would make!!! Colorado would of been a better destination,gold,people,and no mountain's to get over!anyway why would anyone try to make this treck! SUICIDE!!!🤣

What became of all the possessions that was tossed over to lighten the wagons ?
I think they used bullocks. The horses would not survive but the bullocks could eat and digest most of the plants along the way and have the strength and the endurance to travel. Horses need to bring their own fodder.
