Just to let you guys know, the tabla players do use talcum powder on tabla heads. Talcum serves 2 purposes, one it absorbs the sweat off the players hands and two, it helps with sliding left hand (wrist) on the larger drum to get a specific sound.

Its Talcum powder. At least I have only ever used powder, not grease. The right hand (Small Tabla hand) gets sweaty. Due to sweat, while playing the hand starts sticking to the Tabla creating weird noise and reducing hand speed.
He may have seen someone putting _syaahi_ although it is hard/near impossible to see this process in a concert.

After playing Tabla fingers badly hurts specially nukkels n sweats a lot as well n tabla is made from skin I think so I think vaslien or petroleum jelly is rubbed on tabla to keep it in good shape n soft
