There was two sets of this more than two decades ago in the very early history of the game, it turned out people didn't really like that much, and then they never went back again until some random secret lairs and the sets mentioned in this vid

Meanwhile I find the actors a bit strange, but find the historical figures to be a neat addition. We already mythologize many historical figures to the point they seem magical, might as well have fun with it.

yeah, people like Musashi Miyamoto, Oda Nobunaga, Ghengis Khan, or Coligula all have outlandish tales associated with them. but you cant tell me that Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee cards wouldn't kinda work with how romanticized their "feats" are as well (although i guess they aren't "characters" so much, so i guess its still kinda the same thing)
This is basically legends all over again.
With each new release, we get closer to being able to play a commander game to reenact the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny

I mean yeah but at least back then we weren't losing our base magic sets for pop culture sets like we are now. And wizards wasn't selling those cards directly to us as players. And they weren't pushing the power of those sets to sell more. It's almost like there's a ton of differences between what's happening now and then and this time it's a lot worse

Based on Islamic/Middle Eastern myths and legends, and *ancient* China respectively.
P3K and Arabian Nights are exceptions from 25+ years ago. I don’t think it’s ridiculous to not want real people being depicted on cards in the game to become the norm. Wanting the game to focus on its own flavor is not just complaining.

I think actors is probably the most weirdest. If there is a matrix and john wick crossover or cyberpunk2077, it means there will be keanu reaves up the wazoo and thats quite frankly strange.
I don't have a problem with it. Sure, it's weird seeing these irl people being on cards that mostly have fantastical creatures but I like to think that this makes our world part of the MTG multiverse as one of the many planes. Where else can you get Will Smith slapping Nicol Bolas? That sounds wacky and fun.
