Falling off XC twice! | Helmet Cam

- Soooo this was an eventful lesson! I’d never ridden Herbie before, but I knew he was very experienced XC so I was really looking forward to having a go on him. Unfortunately Herbie was a bit too fresh (having just had three months off), and that plus a couple of other factors made the day a bit of a fail! Before we’d even started jumping I was already finding it very hard to slow him down and steer him, and after a while I had no brakes/steering whatsoever as he got stronger with each fence we jumped. It also didn’t help that Swalcliffe was the busiest I have ever seen it, and it was almost impossible to find a jump or complex that someone wasn’t already working over! This meant that there were constantly horses galloping all around us and there were a few times where I had to suddenly try to stop Herbie or pull him away from an approach because another rider cut in front of us and went over the jump first, which wound him up even more.
When it came to doing the water, I’d just like to mention that I approached the jump from such a bad angle because I had very little control of Herbie by this point - it certainly wasn’t a deliberate choice to jump it that way!! I’ve got no idea why he decided to take a stride out and launch over it with quite such enthusiasm, but just as I was regaining my balance from the jump (I really thought I was going to make it!) he swerved left as he hit the water and I went out of the side door! He then galloped off around the course for a bit before being caught… When I tried to remount, he decided he’d had enough and bucked me off the moment I got my weight into the saddle (from the video it looks like I catch him with my foot as I swing my leg over, but I actually only caught the saddle/pad and he didn’t start bucking until I was sat down) also notice his ears are pricked forward throughout the bucking - he wasn’t scared or uncomfortable and was pretty happy about what he was doing…! He galloped off into the distance once again and at this point we decided to call it a day with him because he’d worked himself up into such a state. I jumped onto Laddy for the end of the lesson and had a little play on him for a bit just through the water and over a small ditch, then got back onto Herbie to hack him home, where he pulled like a train the whole way back to the yard! He looked very pleased with himself when I put him back in his stable!!
I was completely fine, just a bit bruised and soggy with a very mild concussion from the second fall which I didn’t realise until the next day (I can’t actually remember falling off into the water so it’s nice to live it again via the helmet cam)! 😂 And I still had a nice time despite Herbie’s shenanigans! I’m also sorry about the audio in the second half of the video, cameras and water don’t really mix! I’m just impressed it kept filming at all tbh! I’ll hopefully be going XC again later in the summer, hopefully it will be less eventful next time 😄
🚨For a bit of balance, I would appreciate it if anyone leaving rude or negative criticism/tips/advice would also donate at least £1 to a charity of their choice 😊
Question of the day: What’s your favourite kind of cross country jump? E.g rolltops, brush, drops, ditches, water etc.

For those who don’t want to watch the whole thing, the falls start at 5:10 👍 I jumped Herbie again today in the school with no problems - it turns out he had three months off before going XC, so it’s little wonder he was feeling quite so full of himself! *PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION* for more info on what happened! 😊❤️
PonyCam hope you are ok
PonyCam Don’t worry my 16.3 tb x-racer dragged me round a XC course and then I fell of in water and coz my foot was in the stirrup still and my boot got stook so I got dragged through the water 😂😂😂😭
PonyCam I watched the whole thing and despite falling off twice it looks like you had a great practice day!! I don't jump, I ride western so I don't know what all the jumps are😂. I think the eggroll is the one I like tho
did you take herby back before all of the other horses and riders went back ??
PonyCam h
omg lol he was like *Yeet im off again*
* grabs martingale instead of reins * MEEEE 100%
bubblebella Yeah you’re definitely more sensible than me!! 😅
Literally my friend was riding my old loan and started grabbing the martingale going I can’t control him 😂
I do that when I mount up to
I always hold on to my horses reins and martingale just so I feel more balanced when walking and trotting. And I can’t canter or jump yet
@Emmatheventer can you do it now it's soooooooo fun
"I knew falling into the water was a bad idea" xD
reminds me of Harry Potter
"What are you doing down there?"
"I fell over"
"What'd you fall over for?!"
DasMica I didn’t do it on purpose
Haha
DasMica omg yes I love Harry Potter lololol
That last fall sounded like it hurt 😖
SE Equestrian The mud broke my fall 😁
I fell like that....broke my arm and dislocated my wrist😣
@@aresblue8522 hope you're doing better now
@@ashh7169 yes thanks, not rode much I'm a bit nervous as it happened when I was mounting, the saddle slipped and he went psycho bucking bronco on me lol...I don't have great range of movement in my wrist anymore but I can still ride lol just about Haha.
I fell like that trying to get on bareback on my mare, she started moving - my leg was not placed right on the other side and she got mad , did a teeny tiny rear and i fell off 😂😂 got on right after and she was fine
What an absolute nightmare 😅 I don't think I would have the guts to get back on after falling into water 😂
Well tbh I thought getting back on might dry me off a bit quicker 😂
PonyCam haha good thinking actually!
Me too
But it was her fault, horse jumped so well.
@@cyria8836 no, it wasn't her fault whatsoever. Read the desc.
I love it how much you talk to your horse☺️☺️
Ella Parkkisenniemi , I have to do the same really, tell her what to do with commands and stuff!
Ella Parkkisenniemi i do a lot too, when I give my horse pep-talks about some difficult jumps I give myself some more confidence ( it might sound weird ,but I talk to her about how far we’ve got and that it would be easy. It actually helps 😂) ❤️
Splash! Straight in the water oops! Glad you're okay, fair do's to you getting back on especially after the second fall!
Herbie on the way home : Is ThiS A GaLlOpING StrEtcH ??
Falling off into water is the worst!
But you could tell from the moment you get there Herbie was full of it, bless him.
Personally, my favourite jumps are steps 😂 my horse does them so strangely I find it hilarious
omg you can hear him say " mum please lets jump all of them, please please all at once!" in the beginning and then just before u fall hes saying i can be a olympic XC and eventer you just have to hold on for dear life! you rode him amazingly, i wouldve lost my confidence!
I am Ellie same!
Good for you for getting back on after all that! I know a person is meant to but I guess I call it a day pretty easily! You rock! 😊
Oh no!! Your so brave to just leap back on, I love your channel and it really inspires me and Apple to improve
Eventing Apple Omg Apple is such a cute name for a pony!! 🐎💗🍎
@@beckyequestrian3891 my horses name is apple jack but we call him AJ
I love the way you tall to your Horse! It makes a happier horse!!
Oh bless you 😂 drowned and bucked off in one lesson is pretty impressive. Once they get into that state there’s no bringing them back sometimes is there 😂
I love how gentle you are with the horses! Everyone falls sometimes but I can tell you are a great rider:):):)
Juliana Linker Eq I’m yet to fall off a horse.
Today my pony decided it was too hot and rolled while i was riding him, my foot got trapped in the stirrup but i got it out before it got crushed 😂😂
hettie sidwell oh gosh I hope you were ok
hettie sidwell My old mare Copper tried that on me once but I got off her before she rolled.
I’ve been rolled on by a horse during a jumping accident. Amazingly I walked away with just very bad bruising
India M I’ve been kicked once by a horse I part owned called Tyler, it wasn’t my fault or his fault, it was his previous owners fault, she abused him badly.
hettie sidwell I don’t understand people who abuse animals. I have four cats and I am their willing slave. Well, maybe not ‘willing’ about the litter box, but then that’s better than de-pooping a field I guess!
R.I.P jodhpurs, boots and gloves .
You were so brave about getting back on I fell off twice in XC doing the highest jump you could do and I know how much it hurts as I got stung by the stinging nettles around it . I wouldn’t of got back on if I fell in water . Well done you are so brave.🤩
I love how you use your voice to reassure the horses, well ridden!
Has 2 falls...gets back on straight away
Oh no! Straight into the water! I’m glad you’re okay! He dumped you off right into it, you are so brave to get back on! ❤
Well done for getting back on both times! I'd of noped out after the second time! Glad you're not hurt!
I’ve been watching a lot of ur videos recently and one thing I’ve noticed is how much u encourage the horses and talk to them even if their being naughty, it’s so nice to hear as a lot of people just shout at them u don’t! I love u and all the cheeky horses🐴❤️
Good job for getting back on 😊 I love water complexes and Storm loves to splash in them 😂
u r meeeee in the show ring “trot....we’re troting...tttttttrot....trot trot trot.....we’re trotting” 😂😂😂 i ride a half arab so that’s always fun😂
Same mine is thoroughbred cross Arabian xx
@@izzydelaney5636Arabian throughbred?
“Tea-rot”😂😂
You was so brave getting back on after getting so soaked😂😂
I got bucked off and it’s took me a year to get back on, I think your brave for jumping back on and well done for keeping calm on him x
Your so strong falling off 2 times I would be so scared thankfully your ok
I love how you were so postive about the first fall, but the second fall It sounded like it hurt and I felt so bad. Im not a rider, but I do have great knowledge about horses! I plan to become a western rider, or a equestrian! And this channel is one of my favorites. Love ya!! ❤
I was doing a riding assessment and fell off yesterday. It was so embarrassing and I really hurt myself but seeing people like you fall off makes me feel a lot better about myself.
apart from the fall, you rode very well - you kept a nice, calm energy. i loved how you kept talking to the horses! hope you've recovered well from the falls ❤️
Love watching these videos before I ride! They get me so excited 😆
Now this makes my horse look like a saint, good on you! ❤️
Great video!i love how you talk to Herbie to calm him down. I wish my riding school offered cross country! i would love to do it! You're such a great rider!
You’re honestly so inspiring and brave! ❣️
Ouch! I really felt for you watching that. More so the second fall. I think your confidence (or at least your ego!) does get bruised after a fall, no matter how potentially insignificant, so to have another so close to it must have been devastating. Pleased you got back on and popped a few fences, and then to get back on Herbie. Well done x
I love a good ditch! It’s thrilling once you gain the horses confidence and finally get them over, plus, spreads/oxers are my favourite show jump
Aw, you are such a good rider!!
Like the exact same thing happened to me today, i was having a lesson at my riding school and i was on this pony who decided it would be fun to bronc me off twice in the space of ten minutes!! 😂
That must be awful! Herbie is probably just really excited! You did really well and you're so brave! I ride horses as well and i have a horse named Rye. You inspire me to improve what i can do and you make me happy!!! I hope your okay x
Ugh this is my dream! I just adore you and what you do so much! I’ve started jumping lessons and I absolutely love everything about English riding ❤️ much love to you
I felt it all, I felt the wet, and the sore hip lmao. The gopro does an amazing job at showing what happened xD
Amazing job getting back on after falling in the water! A true champ u r
Herbie acts so much like my horse. Ears perked up always wanting to go go go. Even on a day where my horse is a bit tired you get on and he's like "LETS PARTY"
This gave me so much anxiety! Props to you for continuing to ride after the second fall. I would've chickened out after the first one.
My age is 9. But when i gallop with horse i i i... Just fall down..and that wa so creepy fall! I can believe how u not scared when u fall down!! YOURE FANTASTIC!
Oh bless you! After the second fall I think I’d have called it a day! You did so well to keep going x
Im at work and people looked away me funny when I basically yelled "Augh! You little -" when you fell off the second time 🤣 glad you're ok though!
You handled him so well! You stayed so calm! Hats Off to you 😂🏇
Well done - you are so brave for getting back on
I’ve been waiting for this video all week💙
Those other jumps were HUGE, I can even get my Arab over a tiny jump and your going through water and everything, good job for getting back on!
very late, but my favorite xc jump is between rolltops, brushes, and water jumps and also, awe!! laddy seems like such a gentleman!!
Wow what an eventful lesson! Well done for getting back on
This video got me super excited for cross country again. I haven't been in a while because all our fields are flooded!! My horse gets super excited and I hope I will be able to stay on!
I didn’t realize this was the safe horse Herbie you told us about until I read the description! 😂😂 you handled him well!
I HAVE WAITED FOR SO LONG FOR THIS
Wow! Right into the water! Props to you for getting back on! I would’ve gone home and taken a long nap 😂
you handled the situation pretty well, you fell into the water, went to get back on and off you go again. i dont blame you for getting onto to laddy. glad your ok.
I could feel his excitement through the video, I could feel the energy he had in him haha he holds his head the same way as mine when he gets excited
you did well to control him, he looked very forward and strong!!
I can’t believe how well you handled that! I would be a bit angry after that, but you didn’t seem to be angry at all! I always end up getting back on, and if the horse got spooked or I just lost my balance and fell off, I just laugh it off and I’m fine. But, when it comes to them being completely fine with bucking and that, I will say, I get a bit pissed off😂
Well done for getting back on!! It’s the worst being soggy and having to ride on with it 😫 (if that makes sense 😂) My favourite xc jumps are roll tops, steps/drops and water complexes (minus the falling off! 😂😖)
Haha that last fall was a bit of a big one, love ur vids there the best!
both of those falls were brutal! u handled the situation so well x
Thank you ❤️
You are such a talented rider!!
Love your vids, remember falling off only helps u learn♥️
Yeaj... ive waited for this to come up when i saw the video on your insta😍😍 lively ridden the strong excited pony
What a lovely ride home!!
Did you have a nice swim there🤣 hope you didn’t hurt yourself
Aww glad your ok! I have been told that you always have to fall at least 1 time before your horse is really yours! Looks like he is!!
Glad your okay!
Ah!So glad your ok!
Oh no! Hope your okay, take your time to get your confidence back if you need it! X
Same boots haha. That must have been so soggy and horrid! Good job continuing!
hope you're okay! totally know how it feels to bucked off when getting on, happened to me at xc too, not a nice feeling at all!
You can ride so good 😍 keep uploading i love all of your videos eventhough i just subscribed ❤
Thank you for subscribing! 💗
Idk y but I feel when I fall off I get way more confident to get back on and do it better and again. It just gives me that extra determination
I hope you and the camera survived! I just starting filming my jumping journey and I hope I can be doing some small cross country by the summer. I've jumped in the past on a pony just like Herbie, and she was aiming for the 3ft jumps when i was aiming at the 1ft'rs honestly terrifying and put me off jumping for life so now im going back to basics and building myself up from the bottom.
I love rewatching this
It sucks that we can’t see herbie in you videos anymore
Laddy’s mane is majestic
Excellent! I came here for a water fall, and I wasn't disappointed :D
Thing I have learned especially when it comes to strong horses, when they are in their element and you tell them no or stop, they don't want to! Lol. My grand prix jumper was like that, and then he found how fun xc was! Oh boy!
Omg 😂😭 hope you are doing okay! 💕
Always a excited herbie x
Well ridden. I remember riding an ex eventer tb fresh a few months out of work and I was the first on him in about a year....he was fresh too, lol. Xx
Oh my gosh, my lesson horse, Logan, would pull the whole "I know you're telling me this way, but I want to go over there" thing ALL THE TIME! XD Fell off a few times because of that. It was a pain in the rear end, that's for sure, but you just hop right back on and go at it again. 😂😂😂
I see that he was really excited 😆
Ha ha OHHH I do love when riders can be humble enough to post videos such as these... they kinda make me smile... I was around 13 or so & had been at my Eventing barn for about 4 years & had been a part time working student for a little over a year one summer when I remember just catching the tail end of a sentence with my name in it- something like "...just have the Cole hop on him for a few minutes... she rode him at a few events last Fall." (I usually got called by either my full or just my last name since there was a VERY hectic 5yr period or so when at the barn there was myself- Carlie Cole- which had an easy enough ring to it to just say the entire 1st & last name, luckily for me- since there was also: my trainer's sister, Karlyn, who went by Karly also, another Karlin, 2 Karens, a Karla, a Carla, a Carrie, a Carol, and a Caroline, and a Carolynne... and I might very well even be forgetting 1 or 2 more C/Kar-s! God it was NEXT LEVEL confusing! So. Cole/Carlie Cole I was.... never JUST CARLIE!) Anyway... the trainer simply asked me if I would quickly just groom & tack up this horse to hack for a few minutes to see how sound he was- I guess since I was not pnly the only barn slave currently "on duty" but also probably because I was just about the only person up there who was at all familiar with riding the big lug after I had Evented at just a couple beginner novice & novice level events the previous Fall when my own horse turned up lame after he got a nasty stone bruise. I didn't even question it- for one, I was still at that fearless, UNTOUCHABLE, *apparently* immortal riding-age when nothing could go POSSIBLY ever go SERIOUSLY wrong, getting physically HURT was so far removed from my realm of thinking it virtually ceased to EXIST as a possibility I life, and even falling off AT ALL was simply a VERY UNCOMMON, very minor little side note in my every day riding life that it might as well have been simply a cautionary tale of what "COULD HAPPEN SONEDAY!" told to me by over-anxious, OLD, ridiculous, fraidy cat ADULTS... Plus, Cortez was one of the quietest, most calm, lazy, fat.... borderline tranquilized-behaved big oaf of a Quarter Horse cross gelding that I almost wanted to come up with some sort of an excuse to NOT ride him simply because he was such a BORE. But, within about 15 minutes, I had lead him tacked up and lead into the indoor arena to the mounting block to hop on... bored already... And no more than perhaps 90seconds later, I was flat on my ass in the hogsfuel footing, sprawled haphazardly across a couple broken arena rail fence boards, with little tweety-birds circling my head....
Welp. I guess getting unseated, let alone bolted off with bronco-style with only 1 foot in the stirrup and launched into the side of the arena WASNT just something that happened in old ladies' riding nightmare stories...? Apparently that old louse Cortez had LITERALLY been on 3 solid months of stall rest until the very moment I took him into the arena that day, unbenounced to me! I was fine... but... I never looked at that old slug in the same light again... Nor did I EVER underestimate the POWER of true "STALL REST" again!!!! .... Twas a very humbling experience to the invulnerable 13yo Event rider.... to say the least!!! Hahaha.
Cheeky little Herbie 😛
Nice job though. The last fall sounded kinda hard but looks like mud broke your fall. Laddy is super cute hehe 😍
what a shame! whenever i've gone cross country schooling, the horses have been uncharacteristically fresh. something about the grass and the novelty i presume! hope you enjoyed anyway. glad to hear you're ok xx
Riding horses when they're fresh is really eventful! I somehow managed to cling through mine launching through the air with his bucks before taking off through my pasture(with me hanging down his side like a spider monkey XD). I was quite lucky all I got was a sprained wrist from the reins being yanked out of my hands!
He was like *yeet I’m going home*
Awh! Herbie look just like a horse at my yard called Herbie!! ❤️
Aww, i must say you handled it very well though, once I went on a beach ride (this was when I couldn't even canter LOL) but i fell of once because Nova galloped down the sand slope, and the next time because the other girls all bunched up behind me, and Nova... she needs her space.. or else. so she was temporarily a bucking Bronko, thankfully she missed the others but I flew through the air because I had no muscle to stay on whatsoever Haha, and I was the only inexperienced rider their and I felt so stupid to fall off twice lol, I can relate to this, but I hope your okay, the water was annoying to fall in because of the wet lol but the ground sounded very hard when you made contact the next fall... he was very cheeky though, when your mounting especially from the ground he knew it was easy to fall off, cheeky boy.
Oh no I hope you were ok! ❤️
You know what they say! You aren't a rider until you fall off more times than you can count 😂😂😂😂 your an amazing rider btw
I've never done Cross Country before but I hope your ok because that fall would've hurt me xD And I am a new subscriber but I just see that your a great rider! I would love to see more of your great work :)
Thank you for subscribing! 😊
No problem :)
What a naughty pony!! Good on you getting back on though!
