  • In this video we take a look at the reason I shouldn't go to shops to just "take a look." Yes, I impulse bought a new AV receiver, a Denon AVR-X2400H to replace my ancient Cambridge Audio Azur 540r v2.0. We'll take a look at the machine, set it up and take a quick look at it running.

    Thank you for the excellent and in depth review of this receiver. Very much appreciated. I have read other reviews of the Denon AVR-X2400H and was considering buying it. After your review i am definitely buying it. It has all I need without mortgaging the house.

    I’d recommend putting your HTPC into the mode that will bitstream the audio. That way the receiver does the audio decode not the HTPC - I found with my denon it worked wonderfully and sounded better to my ears.

      He connects it trough HDMI, the audio codec interacts a connection setup, DAC decodes the original stream in the receiver.

    11:11 This is RS232 cable port. It is used for service diagnostics and configuration. To use it, you would need to obtain a service manual and a cable. The cable can be either bought from aliexpress or from Denon authorized service partners. It is not useful at all to the user. The dot specifies the position of red line of the flat cable when inserting.

    Audyssey XT has a flaw which I read somewhere. It boosts the high frequencies too much. Some say there is a night and day difference between Audyssey XT and XT32, you still have to try both to believe it with same speakers.

    My biggest pet-peeve about many of those new A/V receivers, is the lack of a phono input. I mean you'd think that w/ vinyl's major resurgence, the manufacturers would get a clue!

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 7 lety +5

      I suppose the demand for it just isn't enough to make it worth adding in the additional complexity. I imagine most people with turntables would be using them with a regular stereo amplifier and if you did want to connect it to a receiver, you can fairly easily use an external phono preamp.

    My old Denon amp had a European 6 sided plug inside a 3-pin plug like this one. So did the sub woofer. I removed the cover of the sub woofer plug and it plugged straight into the back of a matching female power out socket in the amp. So the sub woofer powered up with the amp, very tidy. I don't see that feature in any Denon amps now.

    I can't see from your video but is if possible to clean the inside plastic on the VFD front display as mine has fogged up a bit. I assume there's a gap between the VFD and the plastic but it might be a sealed unit.
    I think this may have been due to using a vape near to it (a VFD uses high voltage so static may be created drawing in particles in the air causing them to stick to the plastic) it's not life-runing but it's a pain in the arse if I can't just grab a cotton bud and give it a clean.

    Just FYI when you set your speakers on the PC to 5.1 or 7.1, you will probably not be able to use various surround functions i.e. Dolby or DTS for CZcams videos, online content or locally stored videos. This is for DVDs mainly (and who watches those on a PC anymore especially?) I had to set mine (a Pioneer VSX-44) to stereo to be able to use surround sound. Even though this a different receiver it doesn't matter, this is a common issue.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 5 lety

      Think the PC is currently set to Atmos, I needed to set the PC to one of those settings so that if it's playing a multichannel source it will actually play it properly. If the PC is only outputting stereo, using the surround modes on the receiver will just do virtual surround stuff. As it is I can manually press a button on the AVR remote to enable DTS/Dolby Stuff if I want to do virtual surround things when the PC is playing stereo audio, the most I ever do for this is "Multi Channel Stereo" to enable the rear speakers when listening to music.

  • @Applecompuser
    @Applecompuser Před 6 lety +2

    Good review. There are not many good reviews in this genre so, thank you for posting.
    I would like to get a receiver also. Your model seems very expensive. I don't think I want to pay more than $200.00 USD. Its been a while since I have had real sound connected to my TV or computer. Many of the online reviews complain about the Blue Tooth, so I think that the problem is the Blue Tooth rather than their receiver. So, I may just avoid that.
    Any tips are welcome. How did you select this model. If you are able, I hope you do some more videos in this area.

    Shouldn't skip the setup ever. It has like 9 output channels and you're running it with 5 or 7 speakers. There will be holes in your audio range unless you tell it which speakers are actually hooked up.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 6 lety +2

      I was more referring to skipping the part where it was explaining how to connect each speaker which I had already done. I wouldn't have skipped the full Audyssey setup portion with the calibration microphone. Of course that's me assuming that skipping the tutorial part would have still let me carry out the Audyssey setup.

    I'm very surprised at that not taking an earth connection, it's a metal case, and it doesn't look from the open shot like the power supply is double insulated (and I couldn't see a double insulated marking on the back)...

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 4 lety +1

      It's definitely a weird one although it does have a double insulated symbol on the back below the model number in the box underneath the HDMI ports. My Tannoy subwoofer is the same in the sense that it has a non-grounded IEC connector so I suspect there's some audio related reason for it. Had this been a cheap, unknown product I'd be a bit concerned however since it's from a highly reputable and respected brand, I'll trust that they made the appropriate design decisions to keep everything safe.

    • @camerongray1515

      It's all just connected using HDMI cables, devices all send video and audio into the receiver over HDMI then the video is fed from the receiver to the TV also over HDMI. It also supports ARC meaning that any sound coming from the TV (such as from Freeview channels or devices connected to the TV directly) is sent back down to the receiver over the same HDMI cable that connects the TV to the receiver.

      Sounds absolutely fine to me, I use it for music all the time! Only thing you might want to do is check some of the settings as by default it enables a few "Audyssey" options that are optimised for movies that don't sound as good to me for music, may just need to try turning them on/off and seeing what you prefer the sound of.

    Hello, thanks for this review from unboxing to testing phase. Not so common to see an actual test, instead just putting pictures and some on screen specs that everyone can check in manufacturer´s website. But I have a question for you mate if you are able to help me. Or for you all mates that offer your comments in the video.
    I first bought my first AV receiver (Sony STR-DH550) a couple of days ago. And I have checked that in your video (12:18) your receiver does a short metallic noise, and then you say "...it´s clicking and shooting at me..."
    These noises happen inside my new receiver as well, but x4 times.
    1st noise - When I push the ON button. Short humming noise.
    2nd noise - 5 seconds later. Short metallic noise.
    3rd noise - When I push the OFF button. Short humming noise.
    4th noise - 5 seconds later. Short metallic noise.
    I have 2 speakers wired to it FYI, but noises come from inside the unit.
    Can you let me know if these are common in AV receivers of any brand?
    I am worried about having a faulty unit.
    Sorry fot the long text.
    Thanks.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 7 lety +2

      Those clicks are fine - It's the relays inside the unit which are used to allow the computer inside the receiver to switch on and off different parts of the unit. Relays are effectively little mechanical switches that can be triggered electronically so it's normal to be able to hear them click when in operation.

      This AVR only has speaker level outputs whereas your powered monitors would require a line level signal. You can get converters that would reduce a speaker level signal down to a line level one however they mostly look like they're designed for car audio so no idea how well they'd work with this AVR or whether they'd have a negative impact on audio quality.

    So I'm quite stupid with AV Receivers. My question is: You can only have a total of 8 inputs at a time? Meaning, if I connect, let's say, my SNES on the Analog input labelled 'Game', and my PS4 Pro on the HDMI port labelled 'Game' it would not work? Considering all the other HDMI inputs are populated. Do I have to choose one or the other, or can both work at the same time?

    Hello Sir, How the Denon receiver is working after a year

  • @Sarge92
    @Sarge92 Před 3 lety

    its not that it costs less its that if you do put a 3 pin iec on a NON earthed cable people will plug it into items that require a earth which is potentially dangerous as youve disconected the earth from the device
    by giving a 2 pin for a non earthed device it stops people trying to use that cable with devices that need earth

    Please test if you can attach a microphone in the Receiver

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 6 lety

      It doesn't have a microphone input so you'd have to use an external preamp and connect it to one of the line inputs. These aren't really designed for PA use, if you were to connect a microphone you wouldn't be able to have any other source playing at the same time.

    Hey can I ask what volume level you usually view/ listen on ?? I bought one recently and set up the calibration which was fine but I basically cant hear anything even when the Vol dial is on 30. It needs to be around 50-60 to get a decent sound. And that just cant be right. Any ideas ??

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 5 lety +1

      Seems about the same here, 50 is generally an acceptable volume for me, probably depends a fair bit on your speakers.

    • @lawofaverages5373
      @lawofaverages5373 Před 5 lety

      Cameron Gray Yeah, I managed to fiddle around with the settings and did a manual speaker set up which seems to have corrected the issue. My next problem is how do you switch between the two HDMI outputs. Like yours I have my TV and Projector plugged in but no idea how to switch from TV to Projector.

    I know this DOESNT have the THX cert, but does that even matter?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 5 lety +1

      I wouldn't read too much into it, all that cert means is that the manufacturer paid THX to validate that the receiver meets a predetermined standard, changes are many other models also meet that standard but the manufacturer hasn't paid for the official "certification" - To me, I'd rather the money was spent on the product itself rather than "certifications"

    Why does it not have earthing, it's a metal case isn't it?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 6 lety +2

      Technically it doesn't need earthing as long as it is double insulated which I imagine it is. I'm wondering if it's to prevent issues with ground loops on something as my Tannoy subwoofer is exactly the same - a 2 pin version of the IEC C14 connector.

    X1400h model has coaxial input and pre out rca connectors..too bad this one does not.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Před 5 lety +1

      This one does have the same Zone 2 pre out as the X1400H - it's located next to the subwoofer outputs. The coax input on both appears to be a regional difference as both models have one in the US but neither have them in the UK. Not a huge issue for me at all as all my devices are HDMI.

    • @camerongray1515

      +Tech Today Satellites are Mordant Short MS302 with an MS304 center. Subwoofer is a Tannoy EFX. Nothing super special and pretty old although I got it all used for around £130 used and to my untrained ears it all sounds really good.

      As I stated in the video, I normally used a projector but was using that TV for the video as filming a projector is a nightmare. I've now upgraded from the projector to a 49" 4k TV

      Yet you still understood what I meant, no point being pedantic over terminology... 😉 "Filming" is still perfectly well understood. In the exact same way that you'd "rewind" video playing from a DVR despite there not being any tape being wound...

    • @Rocketryman
      @Rocketryman Před 2 lety

      @@camerongray1515 seems to be your limit to language. You pedantic friend. It's not just terminology. It describing a process you clearly know little about. And rewind is an action appose to a process being film or video. This is not an issue of semantics. Filming is understood but wrong. See when I talk with pros in the business we understand the difference. The amateur consumer does not. Sadly it drives marketing and misinformation. Learn about what it is you use and
      be better than those in the industry that don't. Way too many like yourself that take a pedantic approach to the craft. Not any better than the rest.
