Well, hate to break it to you but...those are real. They happen when a whale dies and the decomposition process releases methane gas inside the whale, since a whale's throat collapses when it does. When the pressure inside gets higher than the flexibility and strength of the whale's fat, skin, muscle, etc it ruptures/explodes.
