- England footballer Ian Wright appeared on BBC radio 4's Desert Island Disks. During the show he spoke very movingly about his former teacher, showing the importance of emotion in interviews. We're sharing this clip on a copyright exemption for criticism and education. Original BBC Sounds link: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m00...
When he apologizes for bumbling and crying, and the interviewer says they’ll all be crying with you…… YOURE SO RIGHT 😭😭😭😭😭
An old English Gentleman creates a new English Gentleman, no race or colour issues, just common decency. This clip is more powerful than any gestures currently going on and should be used as part of a media campaign! Respect everyone it's that simple.
It doesn't fit the mainatream media's narrative that we're all racist, so they won't want to mention it.
Incredibly well said. That's being English
Excellently said.
@@michellephillips3655 Thank you!
Unfortunately the world doesn't work like this..
Ian Wright showed how much this man meant to him. He could not hide his emotions. Ian is a real guy.
Well said brother
Watch it every now and again always picks me up when iam a bit low
It's how it used to be back in the day / all I see now is emotion being stripped out society bit by bit seens like that reminds me how society used to be
We need more people like Mr pigden God bless him
Same here
The exact reason I’m returning to it now.
You have to have had such an unbelievable impact to make a grown man cry on radio, my utmost respect to Mr Pigden and also to Ian Wright, two fantastic and humble gentlemen
"I know he loved me."
Wrighty a real man with real emotions & never forgets where he came from, and who made him the man he was as a footballer and the good man he still is!...true Legend...you never forgot your past as it make your future
Bless
Shout out to the teachers that go above and beyond just teaching.
Ian Wright is a national treasure.
I didn’t think I could love Ian Wright anymore, until this. It was so raw, emotive and hilarious in parts. It just goes to show what we can become if people take a genuine interest in us (RIP Mr Pigden). I am so glad he’s finally found happiness.
People like Mr Pigden restore your faith in human nature. Maybe he was a product of his generation that served in the military through WWII?
People like Ian Wright make you believe in humanity bruv. Fucking hero. Legend of a man
Ian and Mr Pickton are proof of why Men are important in Teaching.
God Bless you Ian, and God Bless you Mr.Pickton. You truly inspired Greatness.
I love Wrighty and I love this wonderfully emotional story - every time I hear it it makes me cry with joy. The workd needs more Sid Pigdens
Irish and yes
Very moving.. Beautiful 👍
RIP Mr Pigden 😔
I’ve replayed this clip dozens of times since I spotted this two weeks ago. I’m absolutely speechless. It reminds me of an old mentor and an uncle and a grandmother. All dead now. And I miss them everyday. Oh my.....!!
Yeah it is a cracking clip.
What a lovely moment. I pray every little lad can have a male figure to look up to like Wrighty looked up to Mr Pigden.
Dear Ian, thanks for your moving personal story! If Mr Pigton could hear you talk, he would surely be even more proud of you for daring to be vulnerable by showing your honest emotions.
Well done Ian, I’m in tears hearing your interview
Ian Wright has to be one of the most genuine people in football. So relatable and likeable. Mr. Pigden helped set that in motion. Beautiful story.
Ian Wright is a national treasure..
Can feel the guys pain. What a fantastic teacher, to have such an impact on a pupils schooling is unbelievable. The utter respect Ian showed him just goes to show what a great character, personality and teacher he was. RIP Mr Pigden.
I don't hear pain tbh. In Wrights emotion I hear his pure shock, amazement, love, and intense gratitude he felt for Pigden. An in his quote about Buckingham Palace, realizing that Pidgen loved him just as much as he loved him. Its almost as if he's saying it out loud for the first time. Amazing.
Phenomenal. I don't know what to write to describe how powerful this is.
Ian Wright is a absolute legend..Gentleman, Arsenal great, all round good guy...
For any teachers out there I hope when you feel that it all gets too much just remember some children will never forget you because you went that extra mile for them, I am in my fifties now and I still remember with great fondness a few of my teachers.
An honest man giving a genuine lad a chance in life ! Brilliant
Ian is one in a million, a really genuine top lad, if you get a chance watch him on the true geordie podcast, he tells his whole life story, it's a great watch.
Ian had a teacher in every sense of the word
The Video when Wrighty met Mr Pigdeon again years after becoming a footballer and thinking he had died is an absolutely unbelievable Video
Mr Pigton I hope you are still around to read this. You are the best of the best and as so many, a real life hero. It's people like yourself, who go about without making fuss and without financial reward, because you do it for humanity. God bless you ame Pigton you are a true hero. 👍❤🙏Shinn Rana
Sadly he passed away in 2017
Wow..just shows the power of a good teacher xx
This is so very beautiful, and in its way, quintessentially English.
Mr Pigden is an example to us all, regardless of race or religion and uncle Ian is a living embodiment of that ❤
I found this so utterly beautiful! Such a moment of connection is such a key element of the human condition.
I am in bits. I hope and pray I can do the same for my children and others. Absolutely amazing.
I love listening to this.
A little bit of love will go a long way . RIP Mr Pigden
Let this prove that discipline done properly literally will save people's futures. Listen how reverently he says his mentor's name.
If you don’t cry at this clip you are probably dead inside.
I’m not crying, I’m not 😭
We're all crying...
Just shows how much a positive role model can change someone's life.
Absolutely beautiful.
I am so happy I found this

Thank you.
How can you dislike this ...
We love you as well Ian
I do love Ian and now Mr Pidgen as well.
I am an Irishman and listening to Ian describe the feeling that he had for that gentleman was inspiring.
What does being an Irishman have to do with anything?
@@Revelian1982 I will tell you what it means, we had very few black people in Ireland for years. Yet when I seen the actual video of them meeting many years later, there was no black or white bullshit that is dividing A lot of people around the world.
@@dublinbay2362 Fair enough.
Always have to bring Ireland into it, via the back door. Bullshit!
@@samuelpepys2108 just because your mongol nation has no culture like the Irish, don’t show your jealousy and envy for such a proud nation such as Ireland. We are loved by every nation around the world except for a few Bigoted Gobshites.
This is just so wholesome.
Verry verry raw ang emotional.
Sid Pigden man. What a fucking hero!
Gets me every time 😢❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful. Take note, you race agitators and grievance hawkers, this is what race relations in Britain are really all about, Ian Wright and Mr Pigden, and many many more like them.
this has nothing to do with race. This is about 2 people truly caring for each other. Do not destroy and drag it down with that remark.
@@Revan-eb1wb You have to look at the context man. It’s the 1970’s, a time where racial relations where very poor, and a young black child and white teacher end up forming a special relationship, it is something to be seen. The point Michael made is that there are plenty of people in Britain who like to stoke up racial divide fires in our liberal generation, and the point is that this video proves that even in times of true animosity, these kinds of relationships were possible and they ended up affecting a whole generation. It’s proof of why race shouldn’t mean a thing.
@@minkstar9021 I wish more people would pay attention to your comment.
I’m not an Arsenal fan but I love this.
I need a mr pigden in my life !! Salute to you sir and RIP
You can hear it in wtightys voice how much he loved sid. Rip sid
Love wrighty, as an arsenal fan myself, but also love him as a human being. Sounds like he was struggling at school, and that he might have ADHD. Maybe it would be easier to spot in today's education and health systems, but people with ADHD need more stimulation. They find certain tasks (usually those that are lower stimulation like sitting, reading, etc.) much harder to stay focused on. So glad that this teacher spotted that Wrighty was a restless child in these situations and encouraged him to follow the things he was more interested in and stimulated by.
Ian you are the heart and soul of Holloway road
Ian Wright is gold
Christ, that clip of Wrighty and Mr Pigden gets me everytime.
Couldn't love Wrighty more xxx
We love you Wrighty xx
Im in absolute bits. ⚒⚒⚒
Beautiful story
We all need a Mr. Pigden
I love this video
Women must have some special moments with other women. But as a man nothing moves me more than when a man sees that magic that can change the world in another man. And then makes them understand what they have. It’s magic.
My eyes are sweating
Beautiful
Honestly wish I had a teacher like that, plenty would sit me down and talk but none of them ever really got through to me.
The importance of good male role models and mentors.
Class.
I listen to Desert Island Discs on a regular basis (I work outdoors so I find the theme tune to often be taunting me, given our weather in Greater Manchester). This and the one a few years ago with the fascinating Nile Rodgers are my two favourites thus far. The last one I thought was a full 5-star rating was with Madness' lead singer, Suggs.
Try the Steve McQueen one. And there's a war surgeon called Mr Nott ( I think). Both amazing.
Man is it raining 😭😭
It’s a bit to late for me to have someone like Mr. Pigdon impact my life… may god rest his soul.
But I’d be honored if I could impact someone’s life such as Mr. Pigdon did for Mr. Wright. The way the world is today… these young children are being influenced by the wrong “idols”… and I could see how in todays age, kids think they know it all (bc of the internet and cellphones), but the world would be a lot better of a place if we had more Mr. Pigdons.
I’ve heard this story time and time again. And I’ll keep listening to it every time it blesses my CZcams scroll. Brings a tear to my eyes hearing the absolute candidness and admiration in Mr. Wright’s voice.
Best part of this is the presenter correct me if I'm wrong Laura Woods new how to talk to wrighty brilliant cry everytime
Lauren Laverne
