The plane crash, contrary to popular belief, was not the point when FARM was dropped from the title. This happened in 1989. The racier edge had already been made apparent since just becoming "Emmerdale". Rachel and Kim's affairs, Sarah's kidnapping, Lorraine's sexual abuse, Zoe coming out as a lesbian. This actually happened before the plane crash.
It was huge in its time but now there is a sensational disaster inflicted on the soaps every other week, so it really marked the beginning of a decline into sensation and predictability.
It was down to Lockerbie - a real event which happened in 1988, and many thought Yorkshire Television were simply taking a real tragic event and use it for entertainment value, helping to kill off some characters to bring in a new refreshed cast.
It's clear that the two actors don't support the principle of having the storyline. And they agree with Eamonn's spiky comments. I don't really see the problem with it. Fiction should have the freedom to portray any subject matter. I do understand how painful such a story would be to anyone closely impacted by similar real life disasters. But equally, so would a storyline about any general topic affect somebody who have that subject matter prominently in their lives. I think that the media provoke responses and help create outrage without level minded consideration.
Emmerdale took a gamble that paid off with the storyline and the Post Office Robbery/Home Farm Siege which both kind of got them in hot water with the ITC. I see 1989-1994 as a major period of change for the show, Chopping off the "Farm" title but not chopping out the Farming, Introducing New Families (Tates, Feldmanns, Windsors, Glovers, McAllisters and of Course Dingles), Coming up with a couple more interesting storylines, bringing in slightly younger characters without comprimising the integrity of the show. Some of the new characters took root and were in it for donkeys years.
The ratings weren't that bad as people would have you believe but unless at the time wasn't EastEnders, Coronation Street or Brookside, The press didn't give a shit and the fanbase was near-nonexistent. Incidentally, they did call in Phil Redmond (creator of Grange Hill, Brookside and Hollyoaks, respectively) to oversee the programme for the next 12 month.
+Hulk2k6 oh yes I know they brought him in to increase viewers apparently. you are right though, the media has often seen ED as the poor relation probably because of its humble beginnings. kinda get the impression that emmerdale and it's cast are much more genuine and down to earth because of this (not that I'm biased living a few miles away from it) :-D
I stopped watching after the plane crash. Prior to that this was a quality soap. Ever since the crash its been one of the biggest episodes of self diarrhoea ever...
It over 25 years ago though now. How can it possibly have any impact on the show now? Especially as there is only 3 characters from then who are still around. Even the early days of the show had murder, rape and suicide. The show was never boring.
This got me into emmerdale I loved the plane crash
Very generous to say that if we dont want to watch it, we dont have to. 😅

Again this annoys me they say before the Plane Crash that Emmerdale was known for Annie making cups of tea when you had murder kidnappings fires etc.

What's the big deal? It's a dram. Lorraine Kelly and Eamonn Holmes being your typical do gooders.
They're taking it way too seriously

Clive Hornby Is A Bit Moody Here😡
Scouse Lad Hornby RIP

those two are the best actors evvvver
Madeleine Howard is so much more attractive than Alyson Spiro

so agree with you I fear it would have been axed if not for this. the show has never really received the recognition it deserves

I thought the home farm siege happened too quick after the Plane Crash
@@leejones8582 They wanted to show that the show wasn't your Nanna's Emmerdale and that they weren't a one-trick pony
eamonn holmes is a knob. It was a fantastic set of episodes, highest ever ratings and changed the soap forever.
Is it true Madeleine Howard left cause of the Plane Crash storyline?
that’s what has been rumoured. She’d done about 6 years by this point too so maybe felt it was time to move on as well.
Madeleine Howard - beautiful, charming lady. Not so keen on Clive Hornby, to be honest
I liked both
Madeline Howard played Sarah brilliantly- much better than Alison Spyro
RIP Clive Hornby
Shame the plane didnt land on the dingles before they arrived
I see Eamonns point, but if storylines are unfilmable because the content might be insensitive, we wouldn’t dramas of any kind.

Emerdale is the most boring show since the moving image began , it needed a crash
