      The cut looked really nice to me. but what does a retired white guy know about black hair.
      I got a hair cut in Shanghai once and it appeared they really wanted to touch my hair. Very odd I though. but then I learn Asian hair and Euro hair have a different feel.

    • @jimw544

      @Cee Cee that would weird me out to. My wife is from Shanghai and I'm a white guy from Atlanta. Our first trip back to Shanghai with our son (about 1.5 years old) I noticed the wife's friends liked to feel his hair. That is where I learned the term half-half. :) No meaning, just a descriptor. I was really worried he would be mis-treated because he was mixed. He wasn't. He was treated as special. He carries an American passport but did not require a Chinese via because of Mom.

    When I lived in Korea I went through 3 or 4 barbers until I finally found a lady who could cut my hair correctly. The first ones I experimented with had me covering my head with a hat everywhere I went; it was a disaster (they just buzz cut it! You don't buzz cut black hair!). However, I finally found someone I could trust. At first she was really nervous so the lead barber (the shop owner) demonstrated how to cut my hair. Once the newbie was "trained" I always went back to her. She was also cool because she actually researched on how to cut black people's hair because of me! Who knew the barber shop could be a great cultural enlightenment opportunity...

She does ok but every once in a blue moon I'll get: "Oops, it will grow back." A few years back I let my niece (she works in a salon) in Taiwan cut my hair just for kicks to let her get the experience with black hair. It was funny. I am Japanese. I always cut my hair for $9.
    In Japan, you cut your hair at either a beauty salon or a barber's shop, and there are many shops that can cut your hair for eight or nine dollars.
    Of course, some expensive shops are 50 or 60 dollars or more, but you can choose freely.

    I doubt they get to cut a black man's hair often, so I think they did very well. When I land, if I'm close enough I will seek them out.

    • @13gan
      @13gan Před 2 lety +1

      Depend on places and how much you pay, you can get extra service even at a budget barber. Hair wash is almost standard in higher end places as its included in the package. Massage is not common nowadays but some barbers do that as part of the service especially among the older generation. Basically, anything above budget, the need to give extra service is there just to justify the price because it doesn't feel right when you can get a quick haircut at the corner barber shop. You can skip all the extra if you talk with them or if you're in a rush.
