      Yah its common in east indian script like (bengali-assemese)nagri, tirhut, kaithi, syllethi, modi, landha, devnagri while scripts like meiti, gujrati, sindhi have no upper slants and in south too no script has that

    • @thehawkseye3412
      @thehawkseye3412 Před 5 měsíci +4

      One can write Hindi without that line... I used to skip it when in class just to get the speed of writing. But later, while revising I would add it. Just a personal quirk and it looks neat. And I have seen some older manuscript without it. But when people do not use that upper line and their writing is not neat enough with enough space, it causes confusion.
      Letters like dha and gha and Ma and Bha can cause confusions without that line. Many people even today cannot see the difference between Dya and Dha. They write sanyuktakshar d and ya for vidhyalaya as Dha. They cannot differentiate between Hindi/Sanskrit "Vidya" and "Vidha".
      One wonders what schools are teaching today.

    • @thehawkseye3412
      @thehawkseye3412 Před 5 měsíci +3

      Besides southern script use rounded letters. They won't use a shirorekha like that. I read somewhere that shape of letters was influenced by of the writing material they used. I think it was because of the use of leaves to write. Though it has been a long time since I read the article so I may remember it wrong.

    • @Candate
      @Candate Před 4 měsíci +1

      I also remember reading something similar that writing is based on what material people used to write on like stone, paper, leaves so they are more efficient example circular letter like Telugu are easier to write on leaves etc

    1:29:39 I have a theory on the "roof" of Hindi.
    Hindi is written today in Devanagari script. Unlike other major scripts in India like Grantha, Sharda or Modhi which originated in writings of brahmins, Nagari is more of a "royal script". The "Dev" in "Devanagari" is actually the King, not God. The kings would issue their edicts and coinage in Nagari script which would be carved on metals and stones. Now, for the stonemasons, it must have been hard to carve words without messing up their alignment (like some letters would seem up, some down). So, they would begin with carving a reference line and then hang the letters from that line. Later, when people started to copy royal edicts and their script, this practice became more common.

    Few comments after watching the full episode.
    Always, great insights listening to AIM.
    First, the colonial hangover that prevails in us is depicted in full glory. We Indians would rather learn French, Spanish, or Italian, but never learn the Indian languages (I mean North Indians learning Kannada or Tamil or Telugu or Malayalam and the same way South Indians learning Hindi or Marathi or Gujarati or any language of the north), and both North and South Indians learning Sanskrit, but we take real pride in learning the languages from those countries which we were enslaved. (French, Dutch, British, and Portuguese ruled us before our so-called Independence). When are we going to understand the languages of our own country?
    Secondly, Indian literature until the early 19th century has been mostly related to our philosophies, devotional, traditional, and belief systems. Later the country started witnessing writings on Politics, freedom movement, anti-British, anti-colonists, etc., However, once the Macaulay education started its effect on the people, the writings also saw a sea change, thoughts, views, and ideologies changed, though the country did not witness writings that impacted globally but started to impact India in general. Umpteen writings can acclaim global credits today, not the English writings but many vernacular writings. One such writer Shri S. L. Byrappa (Kannada Writer) and his Kannada novels have been translated into many Indian languages, the context and ethos are completely Indian but many of his novels are none less than any acclaimed global novels. One should read them if you get an opportunity. (Eg., Vamsha Vriksha, Parva, Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, Yana, and many more)
    Thirdly, your comment on Rightists and Leftists, different types of Rightists (French Rightists, Italian Rightists, German Rightists, Indian Rightists, etc.,) the rightist views are generally relevant to the locals, whereas the leftist views are more global and hence it is easier for the leftist to weave a narrative and viral it, which is seriously a matter of concern. The woke culture is becoming a new norm in the academies and is also getting heads up in the corporates. Our rightist ideology “Vasudaiva Kutumbakam” (meaning the world is one family) has to get promoted across the globe. End of the day, we need not toe the line of other rightists, we are going to be the globally 3rd largest economy with a huge potential to grow and become a 25 trillion-dollar economy over the next 15 to 20 years and in parallel should become one of the major force in the world eyeing for a global role.

    Devnagari may have roof because of lots of compound words in poetic sanskrit , having all of them together conveys the meaning that it is a single word rather than multiple words. In the same way Gujarati which doesn't have lot of poetry and it is a transactional language doesn't have a roof on it
