Classic Guns. I have a Charlies Boswell double Box lock from 1904 Shoot it on Blackpowder days at Clay's Points well for me i Smile all morning and every time i pull the Triggers,Thanks for a Grand Video on a fine British made gun.Cheers from Australia
The sport is being killed off by ammunition prices where only the very well off can shoot! I shoot only vermin, but will be stopping that soon! A good friend gave me some cartridges 50, and when they are finished so am I
You aren’t wrong. When I got old enough to by my own ammunition (as apposed to dad) so I could finally shoot as much as I wanted, you could buy quality shells for just under $4 a box. Just last week I ordered some 2 1/2 bismuth and they were over $60 plus shipping. 😞
Happy to shoot a George Fuller 1898 hammers and a Thomas Bland box lock. Both get more attention at the shooting school than fancy OUs. Novelty value I suppose.
I see your concern but that bench is actually an extremely soft wood, so soft in fact you can put down on it with your thumb and make a dent. I can assure you if any damage was done in this video it would have been to the mech and not the gun 💪🏼
I’m keen to start , would love a side by side hammer gun. I own a Enfield SMLE , but wish to take up shotgun, and it’s vintage guns 5hat interest me , so much history and so well made
I imagine if the gun has 2.5” chambers use cartridges which are suited to a chamber of that size like 65mm cartridges maybe max 28g 5/6s for game and 21g or 24g cartridges for clays
@@tst698 that's basically the idea. Load manuals show pressures so you start there. look for the powders that are low pressure but good velocity. I have a 16 gauge load with 8000 psi that chronos near 1300fps and one with nearly 10,000 psi with similar speeds the low pressure pushes smoothly the high pressure is a snappy recoil. For these old guns you want that smooth push.
Just come across a A Nester of Limerick which I believe closed down in 1880 . It’s a hand built sidelock with 30 inch Damascus barrels hammer gun . The side by side has been handmade to a superb standard and is still solid and slick to this day . Someone has put on a Bakelite butt plate at some stage but it still points and shoots like a dream . I believe a lot of Irish gunsmiths were forced to close around that time and moved to England and went to work for gunsmiths like Purdey and Holland and Holland etc . The skill they had is superb and although this gun is not worth nowhere near as much as a Boss , the mechanics and action are on a par , in my humble opinion . I am in the process of bringing this piece back to life . I found it on a shoot and the owner was putting 2 3/4 steel 28s through it 😳 . I pointed out it’s only rated for 2 1/2 lead only and he saw the error of his ways . My problem is that if I owned a £30,000 gun I would still shoot it weekly , after all that is what they are for 😁 . Do you have any info on A Nester of Limerick guns David , maybe not . Ps that Boss is exquisite 👍
@@gazpal ya but it does happen. Here in the states a company galazan arms is in the business of fine doubles. Theyre building a horrid plastic double barreled pump thing to make their payroll.
@@pbgd3 yes, it does and is happening, but the greatest influence stems from the clay pigeon shooting crowd who tend to think heavier wildfowling loads using larger shot are a necessity.
Finding a nice side by side is like when you find the woman of your dreams. You see the gun, fall in love with it and never let it go until you pass away
Rough, careless handling of this gun. I wouldn't want him handling my side-by-sides in such a cavalier manner. I saw no attempt to keep staining or tarnishing finger prints off either the gun or in handling all the accoutrements. No gloves nor clean wiping of the pieces after handling. He seems clueless.
Lovely old English side by side. David looks like he doesn’t want to put it down, clearly enjoying it!
Ive got an Army & Navy sidelock , damascus 12 gauge hammerless
In equal cond to this. Its an absolute gem to have in the field.

The most elegant of all shotguns and they also shoot superbly!👌
Can you give an indication of price ranges?
Thank you for putting a smile on my face David , fond memories. great video .
Love the old English shotguns
Beautiful firearm and nice shooting! Thanks for bringing us along. Those old works of art are simply magnificent! 👍🏼

A lot of Charles Boswell guns were sent to Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately, most of them are ruined

So pristine I know I'll take it out on a damp drizzling drich day on that concrete bench .priceless
It’s wood
@@alanchadwick2646 really I do apologise now slightly inebriated on a rather fine claret very nice gun though don't you agree

It’d be worth 1200-1800

Nice gun but your probably going to need a mortgage for bismuth cartridges for it or get it sleeved for use in the future

i own charles boswell side by side damascus barrer 30 inch lovely gun to use u excelent condintion
Very nice , look great in my cabinet
Love to have something like that Boswell here in the US but it seems too complicated to get it here
Fantastic review , a beautiful investment !
Superb gun.
With the price of ammunition. Its easy to know why a gun has not been shot alot.
that is a beautiful gun
I'm an American interested in buying and English side by side.
What if u don’t have a licence? Can you still buy a gun for purely investment interest?
In the USA how do you find a SXS like that
My AYA’S are nice but it’s not English
beautiful
Great video, very pretty, but very pricey, I'd bet it would kick when you put 32g of no5 shot through it, 😀
So use a lighter cartridge. This gun was made to shoot 28gms not 32.
I shoot 32 gm and 28gm In my side by side no problem!I’m quite a hefty chap mind!🙂
Can anyone spell what shop is mantioned at 6:20?
Carey Gunmakers, Ledbury.
thanks, unfortunately they are permanently close according to google@@TSCTheshootingchannel

This is on for £6,000 if you email conactus@theshootingchannel.co.uk Alex will pout you in touch with the right person. Thanks TSC Team.

I can assure you the guns are looked after and maintained to the highest standard, regardless of wether it is shown in the video.
He makes me nervous watching him handle that gun. That fellow seems a bit twitchy.
