I love how you always answer the simple questions of "how did they stay on" or "how did they pee" in your videos :) Fascinating.
I'm still not convinced that you're not actually a time traveller who only comes back to the modern age to recharge your camera and upload your videos
😁😁😁😁
I have to wonder as well. lol
So THAT'S what sidesaddle looks like under the skirts! I don't know why I always thought ladies just sat to the side and had to balance haha.
In my youth (several million years ago), I worked in a stable. There were some show jumpers there and on Sundays, we would be off to handle the horses at the show. I distinctly recall one competitor who insisted on completing her jump course on a side saddle. It was brutal on her. Every jump was another whip lashing, neck spraining exercise. I remember folks turning away from the ring, as her head bobbled around. Never saw her again.
To be sure, this was an isolated incident. I do hope my memory is not representational of others!!
Ive seen several women that ride side-saddle over fences. None of them had any more issue than someone astride, and I’m not entirely sure why anyone’s head would “bobble around” any more than anyone else’s would? Yes there is a bit more restriction when shifting weight forward, than in today’s short leather, forward jumping seat, but I’ve been told it’s nothing much once you get used to it. There were plenty of victorian ladies(and before and after that period) who followed hunts, and jumped regularly. Hard to imagine they’d do it for enjoyment if it was the trial you picture
Your lovely horse deserves a kiss on the nose and an apple! Such a good boy(?).
Love the clothes and the demonstration, as always. 😻💖
I had to rewatch the part demonstrating the shorter corset length several times because I was stunned at how someone could have such perfect balance
I didn't realize there were trousers worn under the skirts but it makes sense for the modesty issues and warmth
Nancy Volker and chafing!
I realize that you have been busy with your business, new book and move. But darn!! I was starting to have some serious withdrawal symptoms for lack of a new video! And I really enjoyed you showing how the legs and corset works with the habit in the saddle.
And using Wagner's "Ride of the Valkrie" for dramatic effect was a wonderful choice!
Elgar is a very good boy! Wow, sidesaddle AND pants AND a skirt. Thank you for removing the skirt so we could see how your legs functioned sidesaddle. I rode for many years but never sidesaddle - that is truly a different skill, well done!
Everytime I see a new video from you, taking place in the late victorian or edwardian era, it feels like christmas.
Ooh, I love historical sportswear more than the ballgowns and such, and this is beautiful!
A corset made specifically for ridding and other sports... Behold the ancestor to the modern sports bra!
Honestly I think I liked this outfit the best of all the ones so far; I'd love to see you do another riding habit that isn't too big for you because this sort of trim military chic really does look good on you. Elgar is clearly an absolute angel of a horse, standing there like a statue as you mounted up and messed with your skirts and the saddle girths - many horses I have met would have at least have *moved*, but wow, what a good boy!
Her: I’m not a very good rider
Also her: *does beautiful walk/canter transitions*
A brilliant and fascinating video! As someone who adores historical dress and a love of horse riding, this is so cool to see! Definitely want to make myself a historical riding habit at some point in the near future!
That horse really is an angel... mine would never just stand still for so long, always asking for treats or to be pet... and the second you put your weight on him, he starts walking....
“Cmon Elgar! Wake up!” 😂
Your waist looks so tiny in the corset! How nice to try on a garment from 8 years previous and have it too big! You go girl❤
You would have caused quite the stir if a Victorian lady was caught riding her horse in trousers and no bodice! I love your videos so educational and funny.
Gorgeous costume, well presented sidesaddle riding, and you're correct, Elgar should qualify for sainthood with as quiet as he was with all of the fuss! I've taught my quarter horse to ride sidesaddle and while he's a good sport about it, he's a lot more nervous about the whole state of affairs.
What a sweet horse! I once tried to sit sideways on my old horse (without the fancy saddle), and was promptly and very neatly deposited in a puddle. I landed on my feet, but decided not to reoffend....
Habit is gorgeous too!
Well you do need a side-saddle ..... won’t work otherwise
Hahahaha got told by a horse
Al my life when I saw riding ladies on their side.... mostly on movies.... never imagine they wore trousers under their skirts 😂
You are a real champ by the way... getting on the horse with all the attire
You're too hard on yourself. You looked very elegant riding in the winter outfit. The horse was very gentle and a beautiful animal.
Finally after reading tones of 18th-19th century novels, I understood how amazone dress looks like and how was it possible galloping while sitting on one side! That's crazy! Thank you for your amazing videos!
Me too... 😁
I made a skirt like that, it's very comfortable. Adjusted correctly, it fits perfectly to ride in, and the graceful swoop when buttoned up is fun.
Elgar is a wonderful horse, so gentle, quiet, and patient! Well done, both of you. I bet the bodice/jacket was also great protection if you fall, and prevents scratches if jumping or riding through brush.
Wonderful video! Thank you for explaining-- and showing!-- how sidesaddle riding works. Elgar is so patient.
Very interesting. Your channel has the best fashion history videos here. I learn a lot. I did not know that trousers were worn under the riding skirt.
Ulrich Lehnhardt Neither did I, but it makes perfect sense to wear trousers under that kind of riding skirt, weather permitting.
That's the best side saddle tutorial on CZcams, and you tucked it into a fashion video. Brava!!!
I bet the ladies back in those days would have FAINTED if they had seen a lady riding sidesaddle in her only her trousers and corset!! Quite the scandal!
Or cheering lol
That was my thought. So scandalous! Lol
Thank you. Just seeing the side saddle itself didn’t quite explain to me how to use it before, but it was clearer to see once you demonstrated what was happening under the fabric.
Music "Ride of the Valkyries" - I see what you did there! You're looking stunning as usual in this video!
Well I'm impressed. Really I never thought of riding side saddle as being as sound as you showed it to be. The Riding Habit was lovely too. A very nice video thank you so much.
That is awesome. I sat in a sidesaddle at the tack shop and I wanted to take my leg out and put it on the other side, lol. Also, my horse would have my head examined if I tried to ride him sidesaddle 😂😂
Thats the sweetest horse I've ever seen.
ELGAR IS BEST BOY.
Great video! Looking forward to the Summer riding habit. It would be so fun if you went on a cruise ship and vloged your "Formal Night" outfit !!
Thank you once again for sharing your incredible talent and knowledge! I had no idea ladies ever wore trousers underneath their habits it seems much more practical than the voluminous skirts of earlier years!
That was a real treat to see one of your outfits in use and explaining and then showing what lays beneath, You always try to show the outfit in its appropriate setting, but this one was a bit more in depth.
I spent 20 odd years working with horses up and down the UK I have always wanted to try SS and before anyone comments, how do people think the old side saddle horses were trained and exercised, as the grooms in that era were almost always male and they broke and trained the horse.
I also believe they would wear a habit to get the horse used to the skirts flapping around them. especially the fuller skirts which used to cover the horses quarters and rump.
Beautiful horse and rider combinations the epitome of elegance and grace.
Elgar is a great name for a horse. And Elgar is so SWEET. If someone asks what is meant by a horse with a "kind eye" show them a picture of Elgar. Thanks for sharing and enjoy learning more sidesaddle skills.
This skirt is different from that I saw in a trunk donated to a college theatre wardrobe. Made of a very heavy black fabric, it was made in a split/open design, clearly meant to be worn over riding pants. The straps and buckles on the underside puzzled us until we happened upon a clip of HRM mounting Coronation for the Trooping of the Colors. Aha! One buckled the skirt to the legs! (And, yes, this does date me and the story...) * Someone later donated side-saddles to the college and the experiment proceeded. Takeaway: The fit of the saddles to the horses matters more than the fit of the habit to the riders.
I just love the fact that that corset as it is could be worn these days, it looks quite comfortable!
And now I'd really like to see a tennis player from that time
As impressed as I am by your riding side saddle (and I am) I am absolutely blown away by that braid - totally incredible and beautiful!
And I want a corset - it seems WAY more sensible and comfortable than modern bras that dig in (and yes, I need the support, too)!
Trust me free your breasts ...
If I freed my breast while riding I would end up with two black eyes!
@@theamhway that can cause a lot of pain and effect posture. A corset is actually a great back support
You look very elegant-love the braid on the bodice, and the hat with it's veil in particular.I was also pleased to see the mechanics of a side-saddle, it looks a lot more secure and supportive when you can see it without the skirt in the way! Elgar is very handsome and well-behaved,too.
Not even a minute in and this already made my day
What a stunning habit. I love that colour.
I saw this Notification and couldn’t get here fast enough! Wonderful! Thank you for showing.your leg position. I lived in a town with a Round Up, rodeo to some people, and one of the much older ladies used to ride side saddle in all the glory!
So sleek and classy yet so many layers. My Nanna, born in the 1882, always wore a corset and looked well dressed at all times.
Now I understand and how a side saddle is constructed! I only know western riding and am usually hanging on for dear life! Your habit is simply elegant!
So nice to hear you speak for a change! You have a very slight but charming accent ☺️
What a talented lady you are! So much knowledge and skill in costume, sewing and riding... I salute and esteem you for all the hours you have put in to doing the things you love and bringing your work up to such a high standard. (Sighs, and wishes different choices had been made in own life!)
"Slight accent??"
A crop, necessary to beat back unwanted suitors!😁
Some might find it a turn-on though!
@@kck9742 Hahaha - so true!
I absolutely adore your videos and they have encouraged me to branch out and start making clothing from decades I love and out of materials that breathe. I got so sick of wearing things that were cotton/polyester blend and didn’t breathe and were so hot and sticky that I am starting my own entirely homemade entirely cotton wardrobe. I may be willing to throw in a few satin or taffeta as for more dressy occasions but I am thinking that everythingmade of Muslin or cotton is definitely the way to go. Especially concerning under things!
My daughter (9) and I love watching your videos together! I love riding habits, they’re my favorite kind of Victorian clothing.
My favorite because you talked!! I wish there was talking through your usual videos as it's hard to read AND see what you're doing simultaneously. This was a real treat. Thank you!!
I agree COMPLETELY! You have such a lovely voice, and it would be even more informative to have you tell us what you are putting on than trying to read it off on the side. I understand that you sometimes have to speed up the film, so talking while filming might not be possible, but you could narrate on top of the footage. Please consider it?
IrishSkyeOMalley Well said!!
Fantastic costumes with such attention to detail! Would be interesting to know what ordinary people wore throughout the ages as well. After all, the odds are that would be our attire had we lived in the past.
Love your videos! They always make me appreciate the work that went in ( and goes in) making historical clothes
I have a USA sidesaddle that was from @the 1850's it belonged to my great great grandmother - it is a western one - maroon velvet seat and offwhite and Brown skirt - the side panel has a corn stalk and oeach, red and yellow circles -it needs restored but I love it
I knew women in those days wore bloomer-type pants while exercising, but I did not know that they wore straight-legged trousers while horseback riding.
This is impressive work, all the way around, the riding and the sewing and the hand-braided cord.
I know that I would have wanted to use my riding corset for everyday wear.
I agree loved hearing you speak...most lovely and good riding!!! cheerio!!!
I love the video, I found it funny when your outfit was to big for you, for most Americans outfits from 8 yrs ago would be to small not to big. You are an excellent rider and an excellent instructor, it was nice to hear you talk again. Have a good month
often wondered how women stayed so balanced on their horses ,thank you for showing detail
It was so great to see how the outfit was conducive to horseback riding. Thank you for posting!
Beautiful video! I always wondered about the sidesaddle, now I know a little more.
The skirt is so cool! What a clever design. Thanks for showing. Also LOL Jesus strap.
Great video, it was very interesting to see how the side saddle works. thank you
Women equestrians who rode with the hunt were jumping fences on a side-saddle !!! That took serious skill. You look good up there.
Jumping side-saddle is much, much safer than astride. I will jump well over a metre without much problem side-saddle but not astride !
priorattire perhaps I should give it a try - improve my limited skills!!!
That horse truly is a saint! Last horse I was on was biting other horses, walking away when I was trying to get on, and randomly hunting apples in trees
I love side saddle. I think its an elegant art.
Thank you for that demo. I've always wondered how they stayed on but despite the security, I'm not sure how comfortable it would be after a while. Cool. Really enjoyed that video. You look beautiful by the way!
Omg!! We got to hear you talk!! Beautiful voice! You always have me cracking up at your jokes when you dress!! As far as not a very good rider id disagree! It takes work to do what you do!! But u did give me i minor heart attack when you were sowing us how secure the saddle is!! Of course love for eldger🐎❤
Fascinating. Had no idea ladies wore trousers underneath. I'm schwitzing just thinking about having all those layers of wool on.😁
1. A wonderful outfit, as always
2. It's nice to hear your voice
3. I always wondered how one got up on side saddle. In every other video I've seen the groom was always in the way or the angle was wrong. Now my questions have been answered
Side saddle riding is an art. Gorgeous to see women doing it. Seeing women do it while on the hunt and their horses driving through brush and hill and the horsewoman staying in complete control is gobsmacking. And the men called women the weaker sex! One celluloid image sticks in my mind - in the mini-series Parade's End, the anti-heroine Sylvia is mounted side-saddle, has a few choice words with someone, then she wheels the horse around and it promptly leaps over a fence and her not even fazed. UH-maze-ing.
Thank you especially for this one! I have some very old 1890s, I think, photos of my great-grandmother and I believe her mother or one of her sisters on horseback. I had no idea how side-saddle was accomplished. This was great. I am trying to fathom my great-grandmother wearing a stay, and since she passed away in 1954 (born in 1871), she would have had to make the transition to brassiere. Can't imagine her thoughts.
i always wondered how side saddle worked ! thanks for the video that was so so interesting! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Elgar is a sweetheart! Loved this video 😄
14:15 I am sure the Dowager Countess of Grantham would have fainted right there 😝🤣
Charming as always. Love it.yes! Horse is a dear soul.great demo of saddle mechanics as well. Charming.
What a fun video! Thanks for posting it.
That last still- so saucy!
I was thinking the same thing! Scandalous!
Is there no end to this lady's talents . Good stuff and thank you.
Galland 34 not saying I necessarily disagree but I've only ever seen her put on clothes. No matter the difficulty it seems to me that is a pretty clear and concise ending to the talents represented here. I imagine she can do anything she sets out to do but I see no evidence of that here. Unless what she set out to do was get dressed then, as I stated earlier, there is a multitude of evidence to the fact that she is exceptionally gifted and practiced in that area.
@@jimmyshrimbe9361 I think they meant her sewing talents. She makes the clothes herself.
@@jimmyshrimbe9361 I've started to watch the videos in reverse. Rrrrraaaaaaaa v sexy!!!
Love Elgar...wish I had a horse like him...and love the costume.
I never realized there were trousers beneath the skirt - amazing and sensible. More sensible than riding side saddle...
Actually side-saddle is very sensible- much safer than astride riding!
@@priorattire I have read that some riders, both men and women, switch to side saddle to help with back pain or muscle injuries. This is not just a modern or enlightened thing, but in the past, for disabled men, a practical choice back when riding was essential for transport and recreation.
I didn't expect the trousers either. Or the more comfortable corsets
I was surprised with the trousers! When did that start?
priorattire I would think your balance is entirely different - I learned quite a bit from your video.
The quality and quantity of work involved in the making of this outfit are astonishing. You are a wonderful exponent of your craft. And you look fabulous!
Very beautiful dress (I adore your tailoring) and very elegant on the horse! It works! By the way, a very good attitude on the horse! The saddle calls in German "Damensattel". Magical, thank you!
I love reading historical novels and I have had so many questions and you have answered so many of them that's why I love to watch your Channel
I had noticed the change of styles between the 1870s and 1880s. The 1880s seem to have simpler cuts and have a militarized influence to it compared to the 1870s' focus on lace, trains, and all that frou-frou.
The 1880s womens jackets like this one seem to be inspired from military uniforms. Although, I don't recall if there were any wars and other conflicts in the 1880s, and wars somewhat affect fashion silhouettes.
The Crimean war?
The riding habits are all military and masculine looking. Dark or plain colours, simple design with minimal decoration (almost not decoration), a hat was necessary plus the veil if you want to add it. It's different from the other garments women wore.
I never knew that women wore trousers under their riding habits! Thanks for a very informative video!! ~Janet in Canada ❤
Your work is absolutely devine! The videos are so informative to me. Teaches me a lot about the clothes worn back then. Inspiring to me to make my own! someday i will be able to make stuff of this quality!
You look beautiful all done up proper.. kind of wished us Women could still dress like that. And thank you for breaking down the side saddle and how you sit... cool to see.
Very nice bodice with the hungarian possament buttons 💙 having such jackets myself, i recommend to start the closing of the buttons always from bottom first and upwards. Its way more easyier to close (especially around the chest area) and you dont miss any buttonhole. Closeing: upwards, opening: downwards.
Sounds like a solid piece of advice! (Thanks, I'll try to remember it if I'm ever in such clothes!)
I always wondered how the side saddle worked. Thank you for making such an informative video!
I love the horse, he is like... mmm, nope, not today
Very Jenny Jerome Churchill who loved hunting when she was younger. Elgar was a very good boy too.
Could you do a video on bust support through time please?
I am so excited. After trying sidesaddle for my first time back in July I will be doing a small sidesaddle demonstration in our Fall Festival this month. I have been riding twice a week with a quality instructor and can now walk and trot sidesaddle. It's GLORIOUS!! I will keep you apprised of my progress. Thank you for inspiring me to try this challenging way of riding.
I'm always surprised to hear your voice! It's amazing that you learnt sidesaddle, so cool! Mind if i ask where the accent is from?
I found your videos, quite by chance a couple of days ago. I’ve watched so many already, just love seeing clothing from different eras and class and enjoying watching how they were made. Thank you for sharing
Really enjoyed this clip. I watch you often, especially when I need a lift or touch of class and elegance in meold life. It was nice to hear your sweet voice toward the end too. You don't usually speak. I'm not sure why I was surprised to hear your delightful English accent!? Your home and program are so obviously UK, LOL. Thank you for sharing again. Your channel is a delight. Ax
I found your videos today and have been binge-watching!! So interesting! This one is fascinating and so educational on how our fore-mothers managed to ride side-saddle! Thanks for all the information!! (I sent the link to this one to my daughter, the horsewoman of the family!)
Loved this! Have always wondered about the machanics of riding side saddle. So interesting to see how the fit of the habit served a practicle function as well as a fashionable one.
Were trousers always a part of habits, and if not when did they start being used? I've read/watched so many scenes of women getting dressed in habits and have never heard it mentioned.
Jumping in sidesaddle? I cant even imagine trot let alone jumping!💛😄
much more secure than astride!
@@priorattire really?
Kertu Jõul Due to the way your legs are arranged around the leaping horn, side saddle is much more secure as you can just lock your legs, and you aren’t coming off! You need a lot of thigh and core strength though.
Gorgeous. However,I am glad I was born in the 20th century!😂 I was exhausted just watching that get-up be applied.
