  • In this elk hunting episode by Gila Monster Outdoors, you will get to see Nick on his first archery hunt. This hunt immediately followed Gaven’s elk hunt which meant Nick was going to be by himself for most of the hunt. After months of scouting and with the help of prior knowledge from the team, they had some good areas marked for success.
    Nick was able to get close to multiple bulls throughout the hunt. Most of them, however, did not give him an opportunity for a clean shot. After being joined by Gaven, they were able to get into a good setup and get a shot on a bull. Sadly, it was a shoulder shot that the bull thankfully survived from.
    After covering miles of forest land, they decided the bull was okay. There was not a good enough blood trail to follow, and the bull had hopped multiple fences. The uneasy feeling of shouldering a bull made them second guess going after another bull but in the end, they were not able to put one down.
    There was a lot of experience and knowledge gained on this hunt by both Nick and Gaven. The new area that was hunted provides points to chase elk again in the future. Although they did not punch Nick’s tag, they had a blast chasing elk in the backcountry!
    Hunting elk in New Mexico can be a tough ordeal. We are blessed to have the opportunity to go out in the mountains and chase after these wonderful creatures. It is not always about the animals you tag out, sometimes it is about the memories you make with your hunting partners that last a lifetime!

    Good video. Unfortunately, animals are sometimes lost hunting. Stay positive it'll come together on a future hunt.

      Thank you for the feedback. That can be the reality of archery hunting sometimes! We’re looking forward to a better year this upcoming season!

    Dang! What an adrenaline rush that probably was!

    That’s why they call it hunting and not killing. Sometimes it’s tag soup.

      Sometimes we don’t fill tags. It’s all about the experience and memories. We learn and wait to draw again the next year! Thank you for watching!

    The Gila is a special place. Nice hunt.
    Just an FYI- You have the shoulder straps hooked to the wrong point on your Kuiu pack setup. They should be clipped to the bag for normal use. You have them clipped to the straps you use when in load sling mode.

    What was your arrow setup?

    • @gilamonsteroutdoors
      @gilamonsteroutdoors  Před 2 lety

      Easton Axis 340
      Slick Trick Viper Trick
      3 Fletch
      Nockturnal
      Arrows flew great, had good speed, and were setup nicely. Nick took the chance on a slight frontal shot and ended up hugging the shoulder a little too much!

      Decent setup. What about weight? I'm a big believer in Ashby, because I've been in your same shoes. You guys draw this year?

    • @gilamonsteroutdoors
      @gilamonsteroutdoors  Před 2 lety

      Arrow weight in total is 430 grains. Ashby broadheads are tried and true. Nick decided to stick with the Slick Trick Vipertrick broadheads due to the fact that our other team member had a double lung full pass through on an elk in 2020. Those larger and solid broadheads do perform well on bones though!
      We drew a few tags, in total we have 8 tags across the team. Including family and friends, we have about 15 tags we will be covering this year! How did you do in the draw?

    You can't shoot a 3x3 where your at??

    • @gilamonsteroutdoors
      @gilamonsteroutdoors  Před 2 lety

      It’s completely legal to shoot a cow or any size bull on these archery hunts. However, we try to go for more mature bulls! Not really trophy hunting for record elk, but aiming to harvest bulls above 300 inches!

      @@gilamonsteroutdoors That's a choice but remember when the meats not in the freezer you go hungry. All though, if the freezer is full of meat then the choice is all yours. Keep up the hunting! Don't let content consume your life.

    • @gilamonsteroutdoors
      @gilamonsteroutdoors  Před 2 lety

      We greatly appreciate your feedback! The freezer is definitely full, but the wall is not. Smaller bulls like this are not really what we’d like to harvest, but we would gladly harvest a cow elk if we have to! It’s nice seeing those smaller bulls mature as you keep hunting.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!
