Gobert almost single handedly made those Jazz teams one of the best defenses during their time. His length covers so much space inside the arc and his timing is so good
That 2021 squad had no business being a top 3 defense.

That's why when I see people saying gobert would be trash in the past i'd get mad. Cause he's an all time rim protector playing in a spaced out era.
He would be worse though. Fir two reasons.
1. He would have to guard actual all-time centers who played down low with their back to the basket. He wouldn't be doing anything special against those guys. They were bigger and stronger than him, with post moves.
2. It's NOW that has guys driving more BECAUSE of the spacing. Which is why Gobert is so effective against today's offenses. The midrange and post moves is where guys made their bread and butter in the past. Both of which Gobert would be far less effective against.

@@Biggiiful gobert is 7'1 258 pounds with a 7'8 wingspan and nice footwork on defence. I'm sure no one apart from shaq or Malone is bodying him. And pre modern era, no one shoots three's so his weakness wont get exposed, and he doesn't bite on pump fakes. No cap, this is a hot take, but I think he'll be better or on the same tier as dikembe mutombo.

Gobert was easily the best player on all of those jazz teams. His impact was immense but basketball casuals just like players who can score and be flashy.
Brook Lopez started doing last season what Gobert did for years in Utah, as far as paint protection, and Lopez got tons of praise for it. Lopez also has never been close to the rebounder Gobert has been. The Buck's defensive schemes used Lopez as more of a hedge last season, which was a new twist on his usual drop coverage. Gobert's responsibilities have been even more complex than that for many years. The Buck's failure to make a deep run last season may be proof that putting so much pressure on the center just doesn't work in today's NBA, and that such schemes should be only one of several looks, rather than the one trick pony defense that can be exploited by the right offensive schemes.
Bucks got that fake defense sometimes it works other times it dont but when it dont they never switch it up so they just lose😂😂😂

I Remember when everyone blamed him for the 2021 jazz collapse vs the clippers. If anything I’d say the clippers going to the stretch 5 out all offense is a testament to Rudy defense.

I think I’d *probably* lean 2020 AD as the best peak of the 3, but you can order it in any way you want and I wouldn’t push back much.

@@HoopVenue For me other greatest defenders of the 2000s and especially 2010s didn't have to deal with the almost zero perimeter defense throughout their peaks like Gobert did. The value loss you ask about his relative lack of mobility getting exploited in the playoffs is magnified simply coz he has to cover everything everywhere at once which is not the case with others.

A prime Gobert playing against 80's or 90's style offenses would easily average 4.5 to 5.5 blocks per game. Versus 60's offenses it would be closer to 7 or 8 blocks per game. He's been just phenomenal as a paint protector and underrated by his detractors.

@@c_l_u_ Wilt can be a bit overrated by those who love the legends, but many today who take to the Gilbert and JJ school of thought, drastically underrate players of the past. Wilt was possibly a better defender than Rudy. He had similar height and length, but he was quicker, stronger, more athletic, and just explosive. His anticipation and understanding levels were at least on the same level as Rudy's but with better physical tools.
To be fair, there are some anecdotes that Wilt took defensive plays off during his high scoring years, which obviously Rudy doesn't do. Also defense was simpler in Wilt's days, and it's difficult to know for sure if in prime Wilt could have adapted fully to the complexities and officiating we now see. Remember that today's offensive players have tremendous help from the officiating, with no-call moving screens, offense initiated contact no-calls, and uncalled traveling and carrying violations. While some could call that a point in favor of past players, officiating is part of the game, and if past players couldn't adapt, that would be a weakness in their ability.

For the role of a traditional center he does his job extremely well. People are jaded by modern day centers and the 3pt shooting era

He's modern Jordan just more injury prone, and little less athletic.
The # 1 reason why Gobert is misunderstood is because . . . people just don't watch the teams he plays for. No one was watching the regular season Jazz when he won 3 DPOY awards. No one watches the Timberwolves. Casuals don't even *watch* half the games of the team they root for. If you don't see what Gobert is good at, and just look at PPG as the determinant of success then a guy like Gobert is going to be unimpressive. Then add on that he's foreign, French, doesn't speak English well, is an introvert, and has a too intense personality at random times . . . it's easy to see why other players don't like him. He doesn't have stars sticking up for him, just clowning on him. Rudy can't win. Feels bad for him. Even his charitable donations are under emphasized because off the court stuff are wild. (Bad PR with touching the reporters mics, but the situation was he was attempting to show solidarity because the Jazz were keeping the reporters away from the players during that day. A lot of misunderstood gestures / lost-in-translation moments for this cat.)

-- Dwight can score 22ppg based on dunks w/ Defense. Rudy? Better defender but a very limited scorer b/c outside of 1 dribble, he's rather atrocious.
If either had a better post up (like Ewing, Duncan, Hakeem, even Shaq), they go from very good HOFs to great HOFs.
I think in the absolute sense (stacking skills against each other), Gobert's the better defender and it comes down to discipline. Dwight chased blocks (and goaltended) a lot more, which I think hurt him as a paint protector, as well as not being nearly as big as Gobert.
But because of the drastic difference in playstyle across that short span of time, I do think Dwight was more valuable relative to his era.
So to answer, Dwight in his era, Rudy if they played at the same time.
Great video man! Definitely agree with what you've said, which echoes a lot of what Thinking Basketball have said about Rudy too. He's never had great defenders around him, especially big wings or hybrid bigs. I think the main issue with Rudy is his offense, and you see that especially in Minnesota next to KAT. KAT just ends up being a spot up shooter since Rudy can only operate inside. He's just so limited offensively that his defence can't make up for it especially in the playoffs when teams can gameplan (imagine if he could hit a floater or a short middy). Also just some feedback for your last few vids, while they've been great, I think they could be a tad bit concise (and therefore a bit shorter). Otherwise keep up the good work man!

Those Jazz squads were always weak on the perimeter, Mitchell cant guard a traffic cone and Conley can hold his own but not against a top pg like Dame or Kyrie. This years Wolves squad is SIGNIFICANTLY better on the perimeter than ANY team Rudy has played on
And Rudy's on pace for the 4x!

I've been a nuggets fan since about 09, and during the whole Jokic era, it's been Rudy and Wendell Carter Jr. Who have ever been able to consistently give Jokic problems, and as a result, I've always been very keenly aware of Goberts defense even when casuals have tried to run his name through the mud

Rudy had a several year stretch leading the league in: FG %, rebounds, blocks and dunks.
Today's Minnesota team is the perfect fit for Gobert! He's the missing key that catapulted the Timberwolves, and only the Minnesota realized the full potential of Gobert!

I think it was a tale of 2 seasons for Gobert.
For one, I think he noticeably lost a step, he'd miss rotations/fail to cover as much space, which I think started to slip his last year in Utah.
He struggled to start the season, and Minny's defense underperformed as a result, but in the 2nd half, play-in, and playoff series against DEN he looked really sharp, excited to see how he looks next season.

All I want is for Rudy to at least try to develop an offensive skillset he’s a all time great defender but he’s a poor offensive player outside of rebounds. After Rodman rudy is my 2nd favorite player of all time and he has all the same problems Dennis had plus his perimeter defense isn’t exactly great I want him to either take more post ups or or develop a midrange shot he can shoot like 45% from mid for all I care I just want to see him try

It's not just about the blocks, it's about altering any shot that gets near the rim.
Teams typically shoot 60-70+ percent at the rim, and turning that into a 50% one completely changes the dynamic of how the game operates.

He get paid way too much to be a rim protector. 14% fg when he take one dribble is terrible. He can easily be erased in the playoffs if you put him in a perimeter shooter and force him to be a help defender. Either he block a shoot or defend the 3 point line. Against a playmaking big man he’s exposed (Jokic). He’s overrated as a defender, yes rim protection is important, if he wasn’t being paid that much he wouldn’t be overrated.

There are simply guys who are either:
- More versatile, while matching his paint protection (Olajuwon, Robinson)
- Boosted by era, with a similar skillset (Mutombo)
- Good enough rim protectors, that other areas take them to another level (Garnett)
When talking the totality of defense, I feel confident in 10-11 guys over him in the playoffs.
There is no argument for Gobert being top 10.
