Kafka is especially great in German, deceptively smooth and simple, making really elegant use of German’s features. It’s amazing that there are translations that are also enjoyable to read.
Octavia Butler really was all that. Profoundly engaging and satisfying. Her stories feel true.
Dune shines in a whole different light when you realize that Herbert intended Paul to be a villain from the outset, even while portraying him sympathetically in many ways. He wanted to show that great threats to humanity don’t all have to be like the Harkonnens to be dangerous.

The books I haven't read from this list sound great, but all I could really think while watching is "Wow, Willow is so pretty." 😅 Also Blackbriar's song "Crimson Faces" started playing in my head when you talked about Rebecca, so I watched the music video. Blackbriar's music is so beautiful. Anyway, Flowers for Algernon has been on my tbr for a loooooong time and now it's a higher priority thanks to you. 😊

Dune is my favorite science Fiction of all time and The Hobbit is a fantastic start to my favorite genre Fantasy and has much deeper themes than some people think. I also loved 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, I really want to read Kindred, The Trial, Flowers or Algernon, and An Artist for Floating World. I will put them on my TBR for next year! Thank you so much for a great video!

Fully agree on Kafka, he's a superstar here in Poland and where I used to live, Czech Republic. I'm glad I had a chance to read his stuff in German too. I'm currently reading The Martian Chronicles, glad to see Bradbury found a spot here, even if it seems to me that public opinion of Fahrenheit 451 has gone down lately, and him in general too. The Hobbit is the only Tolkien book I care about, so I'm so glad to see it here too.
I also have Kindred and Dune on my TBR, so thanks for the recs as always!

I’m almost halfway through Dune now and it is just absolutely beautiful, I don’t want to give any spoilers, but it feels as though Frank Herbert has very detailed control over the narration and it has a specific shift that’s done so perfectly it’s hard to pinpoint where. I also loved Kindred so much, it is an incredibly brilliant novel that explored the legacy of racism and social roles (specifically in the U.S.) :)

The reason that I loved Stoner by John Williams so much was that the language of the book evolved with the character's growth, so I guess I'm going to have to read Flowers for Algernon now.

If you love epistolary and distopian novels, have you read Ella Minnow Pea? It's about a country where the man who wrote 'the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' came from. The people see him as a god-like figure, but during a storm a couple of letters of his sentence fall of the statue that they've made for him. The people decide that this is a sign that they can't use those letters anymore. More and more letters fall of and so there language gets more and more restricted. The epistolary form is ideal for this book. It was oublushed in 2001, so officially not a 20th century classic novel, but I think it should be a 21th century classic. I thought it was billiant, absolutely loved it

Flowers For Algernon had me in tears at the end. The format is genius, and it's so hopeful, but also heartbreaking.
Loved Rebecca too, and I want to reread Fahrenheit 451. It's one of my absolute favorites and has stuck with me for years. I need to read Octavia Butler!
Oh The Hobbit warms my heart every time I see it.
I hate admitting that I haven't read Dune yet. It's on my shelf though!
This is such a great list! 🖤

My theory is that the second wife name in Rebecca is Jane, like plain Jane and also a throwback to Jane Eyre. Where we see this crazy wife from the husband's perspective but here in Rebecca it's reversed

I can always count on Willow to have me requesting at least one book from my local library (or, more likely thanks to Tories and New Labour deciding libraries can get by with practically no funding, me spending money on books 😅). I'm particularly interested in picking up that Tanizaki novel, I don't think I'd ever come across it before. Thanks for the great list as always!💜

I read 1984 very recently . Wow so good !and of course so much better than the film. I started Kindred last year and was terribly upset by the no holds barred reality , the pain and hurt. I got so scared of what was coming next that I stopped reading. I sometimes think I should finish it but feel that lurch of fear again. Now I'm left with this guilt - people actually went through the reality of slavery and I can't even bear to read about it! Have you any tips on how to get round this ? I wish I wasn't so sensitive , but then really I don't cos I care about things

    • @WillowTalksBooks
      @WillowTalksBooks  Před 10 měsíci +2

I don’t have any tips, I’m sorry! But I’m also a very empathetic person. I get upset and angry on a daily basis when I see all the pain and injustice in the world. But when I read fiction, I don’t struggle at all. I read Kindred cover-to-cover and just thought, wow, what a great book. I guess I just separate myself from it when I know it’s fiction. But I don’t think you should feel guilty for being that sensitive. It’s better than being ignorant or cold 💜
