Wow! I really don't think I've ever subscribed to a channel this fast. I have just finished Bone White by Ronald Malfi and was looking for new recommendations, and just stumbled upon this video. Nearly all of them have made my TBR thanks to the way you described them, with such eloquence and care. Seriously, I'm impressed, thanks for the awesome video, and please keep it up!

I just discovered your channel after this video showed up in my recommendations. I couldn't be more thrilled! I've read (and loved) most of the books on this list, but there are a few I still need to read. I recently purchased The Silent Companions and plan to get to it before the end of the year. I subscribed and am looking forward to watching more of your content.

I am so grateful that you loved Our Share of Night as much as I did! It was both deeply disturbing AND beautiful. This book has stayed with me and even given me some very unsettling dreams. I bought it for two of my friends who also love horror. Laura Purcell has been one of my faves for a very long time! I bought her newest in hardcover (The Whispering Muse) but have yet to read it. She hasn't disappointed me yet, so I have high expectations. I have a few others on your list and will try them soon. Thanks for the amazing recs!

Thank you for being you ❤. I am not a regular viewer but have watched a few of your videos and come back now and again. Its clear you how passionate about books you are and its a joy to watch and listen too. I first came across your channel looking for a book review for Sundial or Last House on Needless street I think. My partner is a big Shirley Jackson fan and it was your review which helped me get a very good gift. I came to this video for more gift ideas and well you didn't disappoint. For myself I don't do enough reading, my free time is mainly spent playing video games and I always intend to do more reading have a large book backlog for me recently I have read more books recently but only as eBooks. Earlier this year I bought the Shards and despite it being a return to form in my view for Bret Easton Ellis it took me a long while to read it but then happened to see it on sale an ebook for 99p so picked it up and finished it in a few days. Ive read 1984 again recently as an eBook and also picked up Babel for 99p as an eBook thanks to your review ❤ I do prefer physical books as love the smell and general texture, I have always read at nighttime in bed and I don't like to put the bedside light on and then wake my partner up. I know this is a long message and I haven't been direct with my message as wanted to ask if you ever have affiliate links I can buy books from that can support the channel in someway, I do this with a few gaming channels I follow and would like for your recommendations to result in some financial reward if possible. Looking at picking up two of these books for my partner for Christmas not as Ebooks though 😂

    Really enjoyed this video!
I finished up ‘The Only Good Indians’ a week or so ago, loved it and went straight onto ‘My Heart is a Chainsaw’ . I found myself completely taken aback by Jade and the leaves of her personality unfolding and being given context.
Went onto ‘Don’t Fear The Reaper’ a couple of days ago - 100 pages in and it seems Stephen Graham Jones can do no wrong in my eyes.
Thanks again for the content looking forward to checking out some of your picks!

I REALLY enjoyed Our Share of Night. I don't remember reading a book where the sexual fluidity/liberation of the characters seemed so... natural? I don't know how to explain this but those Netflix shows for example have sex scenes with LGBT characters that seem so forced while on this novel I felt confortable with my sexuality while reading this, it was very interesting. I'm adding some of your recommened books to my tbr and I'll probably start reading one of them after picking up The Troop by Nick Cutter, since that one is also very talked about and people seem to really like that one.

Thanks for the recs! Come Closer is one of my favorite reads of this year. I watched your video before I went to the library today. When I walked in, I went straight to the Adult Fiction section and something told me to just look at the first row. I didn't know what I was looking for when a book caught my eye, then fell into my basket. It was by Ania Alborn. It wasn't Brother, but a different book of hers. I don't believe in coincidences and was excited to see she was the author of one of your suggested books :)

Grady Hendrix can do no wrong in my world. I LOVED How To Sell a Haunted House - and I don't even consider myself a fan of the horror genre. I find myself laughing out loud pretty often, and I find that just when I decide I can't stand a character and that they're horrible, he makes me question myself and wonder if they really are as bad as I think? His books are always a guaranteed good time for me. lol.

  • @RoundSeal
    @RoundSeal Před rokem +1

This is gonna add so, so much to my TBR for sure. Also Willow, I was planning on What Moves the Dead next but was wondering if I should read Poe's first to appreciate it more. Could I hop into it without doing so, or would it really refine the experience?

In regard to the rest of these books, of the ones that I've read, I completely agree that they're great and feel very similarly to you about them, but, for some reason that I just cannot fathom, I couldn't even finish My Heart Is A Chainsaw. It wasn't that it wasn't exactly a short book; I read longer books just as often and enjoy them equally. It also wasn't that it isn't my preferred genre, nor was it the writing; I've read and loved other books by Stephen Graham Jones. I absolutely cannot figure it out and it's so confusing to me. From the premise of the book, I was so sure it was going to be a new favourite. This was also due to the fact that the reviews I had read from those I usually have similar tastes to were great. I gave it a good go, reading well over half of the book as I was almost desperate to change my mind about it, but I just didn't care about what was going on and was not enjoying the plot.

My Heart is a Chainsaw made me sad. It’s less about being a Slasher and more about referencing Slashers. And the slasher elements don’t happen till the end. And it doesn’t last as long as one would expect. It takes waayyyy too long for the bodies to fall too.

some of them are very woke books, why preaching political messages in genre fiction

Genre fiction has always been woke, honey. H.G Wells wrote War of the Worlds in 1898, which was an anti-imperialist novel. George Orwell’s 1984 was published in 1949 and was an anti-fascist novel. I just finished rereading Ursula Le Guin’s 1969 novel The Left Hand of Darkness, a novel about patriarchy and gender roles. And if you want to talk about horror specifically, would you like me to discuss the deeply queer history of the genre? Because that history is deep and we’ll be here a long time. Or would you rather admit that you have no idea what you’re talking about, that you have no critical thinking skills, and until this moment you honestly thought that all genre fiction was just simple fun for white men to enjoy?

Why do you think it’s hatred to call cis women cis? I’ve had this conversation with so many people and they never, ever, ever get it. You’ve got tall women, short women. Black women white women. Blonde women, brunette women. Cis women, trans women. Do you get it? No harm done! No hate intended!

Gay women, straight women. Old women, young women. Extroverted women, introverted women. I could go on and on. Cis women, trans women. It’s the same thing. Please tell me you get it. I’m so sick of trying to teach the brick wall 😭

@@WillowTalksBooks It's just women. We're women, nothing else. Not cis. It's derogatory. As women we face so much in this world why make as feel even less. As trans you should understand

@@WillowTalksBooks I was born female I do not need to be called cis anything. I am what I am and do not need any fancy title to make me feel worthless. Cis is offensive

So you didn’t take in anything I just said? Okay, let’s chalk this up to what it is: transphobia. Why is it transphobia? Because if you can have straight/gay women, black/white women, tall/short women etc, but you insist on saying “women” and “trans women” you are putting us outside the box of womanhood. You are denying us our womanhood. You are women; we are trans women. That is exclusionary transphobia.
