Just turned 40 few days ago along with finished my first year as a full time barber. Im getting a major surgery out the way and then gonna go for my dream of having a shop. vic pen you can contact your state and request information on opening your barbershop and it will have everything you need know for approval in it.

If you get a student to do your business plan for free be kind and pay that student atleast 1/3red of what you would pay a professional. Remember all the hardwork that you put in barber college for pennies and some didn't tip at all - year it is part of your education but some people really need that blessing so sow a seed. Great information though

Hey what's your position on a barber shop owner that is not a barber, just managing the shop. I have an chance to buy an existing shop with 6 chairs the existing owner will sign a contract for 1 year as will the other 2 barbers. There is are mixed clients, latin and black. Is this something I should look into or is it a pass. Thanks for your input.
I think its fine, to be completely honest I think its a GREAT position to be in I personally feel that was one of my hinderances. I was so busy working in the shop I could not really work on it to really create explosive growth. I would do it if I were in your position. I would advise to listen to your barbers and see if what they want is doable for your business model.

I used multiple brands but the one that customers liked the most was from a company named Men-U. I also used other brands but this one sold best especially the create and shape. Its still sells very well for me to this day.
I used multiple brands Men-U, Billy Jealousy, California North, Jack Black etc
I like the info i have a small barber shop and im trying to up grade with my own money im not trying to get any bank loan just my tax money.
I would definitely recommend using your own money if you can. I would probably invest in other ways to generate income if you can. Like vending machines or products to sell to customers.

Do the bathrooms have to be a certain size ? I don’t see nothing about it on the regulations on my state website
That’s a good question. That would fall under your Twp regulations. Normally if you occupy a space that was previously a barbershop you can keep the bathroom the way it is but if your moving into a new space they may require a handicap accessible bathroom. When I had my shop, because I was in a new space it had to be big enough for someone in a wheel chair.

Latrell Sean I had that problem. What I did was, go to the hair schools and recruit talent. I asked the instructors what good barbers they had and if I could talk to them about a job. I would have them come to the shop and perform a demo cut for me and I chose the best ones out of the bunch. From there I would teach them what they didn’t know. Be careful with this approach though. I lost some clientele during the training process of the barbers. But that was my approach.

It depends on where you are, in my state you not supposed to rent out chairs. So in my state, Yes they can. It is a way to track expenses and taxes for them as barbers.
Hey! This video was amazing & very informative. I was wondering your opinion on just opening a shop but not cutting in it. I’ve wanted a shop for a long time but for my own different reasons. Do you think I could successfully run one with little to no barber experience but rather with business experience/mindset?
Lilbiger YT if I had to do it over I would approach it the way you are suggesting. I absolutely believe you could do it. You would need a good barber to manage it for sure though.
