Building A Roubo Work Bench Out Of Southern Yellow Pine (Part 1)
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 06. 2018
- I built this Split top roubo style woodworking bench out of affordable lumber from the home center. The benchcrafted tail vise and leg vise were not so affordable but definitely worth the investment. This work bench is solid, heavy and great for hand tool woodworking. I used the benchcrafted plans as a guide but had to change some dimensions since i used dimensional southern yellow pine from the home center. I also used Popular woodworking magazine's issue #191 for a guide to cut the dovetails or condor tails as they call them.
In this video, I laminate the legs and top, make the end cap and dovetails and install the benchcrafted tail vise. I hop you enjoy the build and please consider subscribing so you don't miss part 2!
I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up czcams.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.
POV: By now you've watched around 50 videos of how to build a work bench, yet you're still sitting here and wondering how the hell you're gonna do it owning only a drill and a hand saw + 10 dollars on your bank account.
I always love the irony of needing a bench to build a bench.
Nice. I always appreciate the people making videos showing how they accomplished something. Well done and thank you.
Great video., beautiful build ! I really appreciate the show of details without dragging forever. Nice balance for us viewers :)
Thank you!
I'm trying to figure out how to build said bench without a bench. Nice work man!
Quality craftsmanship!
I just finished building my first workbench out of SYP and I’m happy with it so far. Your bench has so much more precision than mine. I’m inexperienced and have some gaps, but I feel it’ll do it’s job for years. Thanks for sharing!
Best Benchcrafted Tail vice vid I have seen. Fantastic.
One day I will be copying you.
Thanks👍👍👍
Thanks. You won't be sorry
Incredible works
Great work with a wide variety of measurements and tools. AND, it was a real bonus for me to watch a fellow "lefty" working. It gives me a measure of hope for success on my own.
Thanks! There's a few of us lefty woodworkers out there!
What an exquisite piece of work! Well done and thank you for sharing.
Nice build, thumbs up! Looking forward to part 2.
Roland Kuhn Thanks!
Beautiful job Dave.
I'm impressed.
First-class bench!
wish we could get southern yellow pine in Colorado...nice job!
👍👍👍 fantastic build which covers powertool and massive hand tool usage, you are a 360 degree woodworker!
the tinywoodworkshop thanks. I love both (but hand tools a little more)
I couldn't have been more impressed with your skill, and with the engineering on this build. You sir are an absolute master wood wooker, and I appreciate your sharing your prowess for the rest of us to emulate.
I am glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
The simplest ,nicest beefiest, workbench I have seen. That Southern Yellow pine looks fabulous too. May I suggest a 3/8 th inch hardwood baseboard for your router to span a long cut like the wagon vice routing job. BRAVO man.
Thanks!
Nice work young man! I really like how you hunted down just the right wood for making your new bench. So often do you see other channels on youtube, even some very popular channels, who use wood that contain the pith of the tree. Cheers, William
This was the most details I've seen on a CZcams video of someone that is making one of these workbenches, very easy to follow if making alongside your video. Nice one thankyou!
Thank you for the feedback!
Just happened to trip over your channel and now I'm a subscriber. Great video and discussion. Can't wait to see what else you've done, thanks for sharing,
Thanks for watching. Still pretty new here but I am having fun making videos and working in the shop
Great craftsmanship! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
G’day mate, seriously enjoyed this build video, these are full on builds & referring to using pine Jay Bates just put out a cool video on his comparison pine versus Hickory workbench & I think he enjoyed the pine bench better, absolutely top video buddy & keep on cruising along, looks like the weather is hot in the States 🔨🔨👍👍
Sumo's Projects I'm glad you liked it. I watched Jay's video. I was considering using a harder wood but at the end of the day, I want to be able to beat it up and not feel bad about it! It was good to hear he liked the pine better.
Nice bench! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks
Well done. I like the way you explain things as you go.
Thank you!
That looks like a very solid workbench, well done!
Make It thanks! It should last a very long time!
very nice valuable workbench, good job and thank you.
Very interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing
Thanks!
Great Job !
That hardware is like BUTTA! Looking good!
PatCavanaugh1 they are so nice!!
Very well done, both video and narration. Thank you.

Kuffys Woodwork Yea. Cant wait to get some use on it
Looks ace 😊👍👍👍
Awesome work!
Scott Hunt thank you.
São Paulo, Brazil, beautiful work the workbench was wonderful.
Thank you
Very nicely built and explained.
Thank you!
Binging your vids now!
Ditto. I found his channel a few days ago and I’ve started to do the same. I’m really impressed by his editing, commentary and overall style.
you did a great job man. now i want to build one
Thanks! Build one!
NO FAIR! YOU ALREADY HAVE A BENCH!!! lol.... seriously, nice build. It really sucks building a roubo without a lot of space and very little work holding - but it can be done.
Haha. It definitely made it a little easier. I thought about making it on saw horses but I wouldn't have had any room to film it.lol. thanks for watching
Dirk sent me!!! Glad he did!! 👍👊
Jake Thompson Thanks! Sumo is awesome for doing that.
Really good work! Glad I took a view and sub’d you. I’m watching as many roubo builds as I can before I start. Thank you!
Thanks! Good luck with your build
Impressive build; good attention to detail. Me gusta.
Thank you!
nice job and a really good looking bench
Thank you!
Nice vid
Very nicely designed deaf man can woodworking
Excellent build and walk-through! Thanks for sharing and keep the videos coming.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome
Great video Dave
My ALF Consultant Thanks!
great video, thanks for sharing.
When you were routing freehand near the end of the video, I would use a small piece of straight lumber pinned down with brad nails and use that as the fence. Since it's the bottom side, the little pinholes the brads make won't be noticeable. (just my 2c)
Great tip. Routing freehand can go wrong pretty quick. Thanks for the advice. This is what I love about the maker community here!
My top is 5" thick, so I used a brace and auger bit to hog out the waste and a chisel and router plane to clean and square things up for both the cavity and the rail slots.
Nice job!
areUaware thanks!
Excellent video! Well thought out and presented. I commend your good work on the bench and applaud your videography. I prefer videos that have no background music, but yours was at low enough volume for me to almost forget it was there. I especially appreciate the fact that you did not point the camera at your face and blab incessantly. I watched your video because I am interested in what you were building, and that’s exactly what you presented. Well done.
Thanks for the feedback!
Very nice work! I have bookmarked your video for the day I do my own build. You have a new subscriber!
Thanks!
I have to say you put out a great video. Your explanations are great and you come across very humble. You’ve earned a new subscriber and I haven’t even looked at your page to see if you gave other content. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
pop wood sent me, nice work, i will go watch your second vid now
Carbonite Gamorrean great! Thanks for checking it out!
Very nice!
Thanks!
This is a good video - many thanks for posting - it collates a lot of useful tips on building these benches. Nice effort on the joiner's tool chest too I think?!
Thanks! Yes, the it is a joiner's tool chest. It was a lot of fun to make
You have some nice machinery!
Thanks! 14 yrs of upgrading. I would like to upgrade my jointer one day but these tools do just fine
VERY NICE!!!
Thanks!
Excellent stuff, glad I found you, subbing to your channel. Thank you for sharing 👍😄
Gary Thomson Joinery thanks! I just watched your jointer/ carpenter's stool video! Great stuff. I love this community of woodworkers and makers
Twisted Boards Thank you Dave and thank you so much for subscribing too, the community is brilliant. I love your dslr shots, you’re putting excellent quality into your editing 👍😄
14:19 "Honey, are you still out there messin' with that fidget spinner of yours?" ... "No, dear." :D
You sound like Joe Rogen.
And your table was dope.
awesome
Nice buddy, wouldn’t change a thing!
Thanks!
Thank you, Dave. Your presentation on this build is the best of many out there. I'm getting ready to start my bench using Benchcrafted's hardware and plans and a load of 8/4 ash I scored for cheap. Your video brings that rare combination of real expertise and an efficient presentation that moves right along, while including all the necessities and a whole bunch of little practical tips that I think will save me a bunch of headaches. Well done, man.
Thanks so much for the feedback. Your going to love the vise hardware. I am definitely spoiled now! The bench is going to be nice out of Ash! Good luck with the build.
Hi Dave. I finished my bench 2 months ago after 300 hours of work. With care, it came out so nice and better than I had expected. I ended up finding some African Sipo for the chop, endcap, and deadman. And you were right, it makes all of my woodworking projects so much easier and pleasant. Your videos were a big help. @@TwistedWorkshop77
@@timb.6269 this is awesome. I'll bet the chop looks great. Glad the videos helped!
Nice
Really well done! You are a patient man waiting 5 weeks for the lumber to dry! I think I started my bench within a day or two after buying the lumber! I just couldn’t wait. Cheers, and really well done video too!
The HandToolery I was excited to get started but had to finish a couple other projects first. Not sure how much waiting helped. A couple boards were still pretty wet
I built mine about 18 months ago, and though there has been some warping, it's been surprisingly little, and I've not had to re-flatten the top yet! I'm betting yours will be fine a year from now, too!
Great video. The attention to detail and the way you explain it is very important and appreciated. Keep it up.
Thank you!
Awesome! you just got a new subscriber
Awesome! Thanks
Thanks for sharing this video. I have been contemplating building a new work bench along this same line and I was considering lots of different types of wood to buld it with. Yellow pine was one of them but I hadn't decided on it for sure but after seeing how nice your top as come out I think I'm going to give it a try as well.
I have been very happy with the yellow pine. Good luck with the build!
Great job with the work bench (Y)
I'm new here, and I hope it's okay I mention this:
A loose shirt and a jointer (or any rotating tool) within an inch of each other is something that can't be said too often, as people still do it and some of them get badly injured! (About 1:13 into the video)
I know, people need to take care of their own safety, absolutely, but when editing a video like this, it would be a perfect moment either to remove the sequence or better, add a "Don't do this" comment.
This is not meant as a negative comment and I sure gave the video the Thump Up it deserves, but if we can't teach people not "just" how to make amazing things, but also do it safe, and admit we're all human and we all make mistakes, it's in my view a "win win". :D
Stay safe and creative (y)
what a goor broadcast. thans a lot.
Thanks!
Very nice. Every thing is neat, clean, and in a very high pecision I watch the way how you hold your tools and you do hold the tools like no other does, perpendicular, perfectly square, .... very great job ... stunning
Thanks so much!
I loved the inspiration. But seriously tuck your shirt in at the jointer!
For safety!! Got it.(I thought my belly was hanging out and had to go watch all of the jointer scenes)
Great job on this bench and video. It's obvious you put a lot of time and work into this bench. I may try to make one also,
I meane: good broadcast.
Outstanding, well done. Your build is exactly what I have been thinking of doing for the last couple of years. You may have inspired me to get it done. :-)
Ed Nyegaard Thanks! You won't regret it.
Hi! Beautiful build, I've enjoyed both parts :) That's incredible, that you go to the Home Centre and get such pretty wood. In Poland, where I live, it's impossible to get such wood even at premium lumber yards ;) What was the thickness of the wood You used? Cheers!
Thanks! The pine I used was 2x12 but the actual size was 11.5" x 1.5" . We are lucky in the southern part of the United States to have this inexpensive strong wood widely available
You appear to be an accomplished wood craftsman nice to see your work.
Great build I really like the vise I'm getting one for the shop thanks I subscribed because of this video I hope that you have more to come thumbs up my friend
Thanks!
Samurai carpenter has a cool solution to your router fence problem.
czcams.com/video/DV9Cb_-Axos/video.html
@@Jason-it5qc I've seen that! Clever. Thanks for sharing
Real nice job - I'm building the same bench right now out of reclaimed pine. You're making it look easy and I know from direct experience that it is quite challenging. Really good man - I'm glad I came across your video.
Thanks!
I wish i could get SYP in the Northeast for what you said you paid. up here all we get at the home centers is crappy whitewood out of canada. I've decided to hold out and wait until i can pull enough money together to go with a Maple bench. Nice build you did a great job.
Thanks. My brother in the middle of building the same bench with maple. It looks great. Probably a little easier to work than pine too. The hard and soft mixed grain of the yellow pine was tough to get clean cuts and shavings
Nice, only a little jealous. Not a lot.
thanks for the video. i really enjoyed it. out of all the workbench builds yours has the right mix of budget and utility. i agree money should be spent more on the vice hardware than on the wood itself. i am not sure i am ready to spent bench-crafted money on mine, but i do want something nice. what other vices were you considering? i think my budget would be 400-500 for both end and front vices - probably the veritas twin-screw.
Thanks. I considered the 50.00 vise screws I had on my last bench for the leg and tail vise as this would have made the enter bench build less than 250.00. I am glad i went with the BC hardware though. I recently built a moxon vise for dovetails and joinery work. I like being able to clamp boards between the screws. Something like the twin screw design would be awesome
Very nice work. The SYP should work well, I also think it was a good move to go with the better hardware. Looking forward to the next installment
The Old Plank Woodworks thanks! I dont think I'll regret the vises
I've watched this video a handful of times aver the years and I am finally about to embark on my own build using bench crafted hardware. Love the overview of your build process and will definitely be referring to it as a guide.
By the way, are your still making videos? Seems like there haven't been any new posts in the last year. Hope you plan on continuing the channel.
Thanks! Good luck with your build
Very impressive work - master craftsmanship - imho
Thank you!
Subbed
Very good, perfect...but I wanted to see you guys do this ROUBO Bench, with our HIGH density Massarannduba here in Brazil, or with our "Rouxinho - pau ferro", as the name says (Pau Ferro = wood of iron)... they say it is the densest wood in the world. To make it with the same color, we have Garapa, a light yellow color, just like yours but also with high density and difficult to cut due to the composition that has the presence of Silica and blinds the tools and saw.
I love your approach to building the Roubo bench, careful and considered. Good work and inspiring. When I build mine I think I will your your exact method, but I am considering laminating the pine or fir with 1/4" resawn maple for the durability.
Thanks! It would look good with the maple strips. Hard wood can't hurt!
That is a nice saw guide you used with the circular saw, can you tell me who makes it?
Marc Thornton it is made by Kobalt. I think that's Lowes brand. It works well and was inexpensive. I think I've seen the same guide branded with Bora
How has it held up over last cpl years? Great build btw.
10:55 drill looking like an X-wing
Wow! Excellent craftsmanship!!! Any plans that could be purchased? Thank you sir!
Thanks! I have been slowly working on some plans. Hopefully in a couple months I will have some available
