Icon For Hire- Pop Culture Lyrics
    [Post-Chorus]
And the beat goes on, drone drone like a metronome
Day in and day out I know how the story gonna go
Typical, typical, tongue tied and weak willed
Stuck on the sedative, evidently to sleep well
    [Verse 1]
But I haven't slept in days, I haven't dreamt in nights
I've been busy building theories I just can't wait to try
See, I think the beat's made to drown out the sound of the boom boom
While they shoot our last hope down
    [Chorus]
Pop culture does nothing for me
The American dream mainstream just bores me
Cause I'm not like you, I'm immune, I'm immune
Say it over and over until it comes true
Pop culture does nothing for me
The American dream mainstream just bores me
And we all act like we see right through it
When we all know we're addicted to it
    [Post-Chorus]
And the beat goes on, drone drone like a metronome
Day in and day out I know how the story gonna go
And the beat goes on, drone drone like a metronome
Day in and day out I know how the story gonna go
    [Verse 2]
Check out them men in suits, they're working overtime
Memorizing what you buy, analyzing what you like
I think the beat's made to clash and distract while they cha ching
Try and buy our loyalties back
    [Chorus]
Pop culture does nothing for me
The American dream mainstream just bores me
Cause I'm not like you, I'm immune, I'm immune
Say it over and over until it comes true
Pop culture does nothing for me
The American dream mainstream just bores me
And we all act like we see right through it
When we all know we're addicted to it
    [Bridge]
Counting down the minutes 'til my heartbeat stops
Fooling myself is a full-time job
Counting down the minutes 'til my heartbeat stops
Fooling myself is a full-time job
Counting down the minutes 'til my heartbeat stops
Fooling myself is a full-time job
    [Chorus]
Pop culture does nothing for me
The American dream mainstream just bores me
Cause I'm not like you, I'm immune, I'm immune
Say it over and over until it comes true
Pop culture does nothing for me
The American dream mainstream just bores me
And we all act like we see right through it
When we all know we're addicted to it
    [Outro]
Counting down the minutes 'til my heartbeat stops
Fooling myself is a full-time job
Pop culture does nothing for me
The American dream mainstream just bores me

"See, I think the beat's meant to drown out the sound of the-"
    "boom boom"
"-as we shoot our last hope down"
    and
"I think the beat's made to clash and distract while they-"

These two lines just hit me really hard

I think it's funny how so many people in the comments section are talking about how much they hate mainstream music because this song is kind of meant to be an ironic jab at people that say that. "We all act like we see right through it, when we all know we're addicted to it."

+sunnysea24 sad to see how many of us say thay hate popculture, and still they're defined by it. I don't listen to "pop-music", but still I have to admit, for example let's say Justin Bieber is talented. Why? Even IF he uses auto-tune, he does something right, that many others can't. Ofc there are those who don't even want, but you know, still there are a lot who does. A sub-culture is like pop-culture, exactly. We could even say that popculture is a subculture, it's just the biggest one. Doesn't matter how you hate the other's, you'll still be like them. I'd say I am probably in that group, who's into dnb and dubstep, but still here I am enjoying this song. It doesn't matter if you listen to popshit, (cuz ye, I still don't like it, I just accept it) rock/metal or electronic music. If you hate on the others, you are just as bad as they are. Make love not war. Why? Because you might not like it, that's fine, but also if you do, that's fine too. You don't have to hate on pop music if you don't like it, and you DEFINETLY shouldn't, if you do. Just don't try to be cool with hating on things others like, or even you do, you just gotta' be cool you kno'.

***** I'm in total agreement here. They I think that in order for a band to be truly a great band, they have to change. But change is a bad word, I'm thinking more like adapt. if a band comes out with the same music over and over again, where is the maturaty? To be stuck in that same rut. To expand the topic, im my opinion, makes a band that much better. They are not afraid to piss off a couple of dumb fans who don't belong here in the first place in order to make quality, original music that stems from their desire to make whatever music they want to make. My favorite band, We Came As Romans, has lost countless fans because of their changes. Their first album is very different from their most recent self totaled album, but I still love them. Although, I would agree with you that Icon for Hire has not changed. They are not a sellout band, and I love them for that. XD

some people think that a song is only good when its deep. But that is a pretty good song with a great message. Some people are so blinded with "Deepness" That they only listen to them and miss so much. Those people who insult the songs for not being deep are no different than people who only listen to pop. They both are so entitled that at some point they tend to ignore what is the message in the song and that is a pity.

This is a topic that I've always wanted to address because I see it as a problem.
Music is part of many people's lives, one way or the other, including mine. Music is so important to me, it's helped and is still continuing to help me through so much in life. There are many different music genres...And this where the problem lies.
Too many people say things like:
"That's not rock, so how can it possibly have deep lyrics and mean anything to anyone?"
    Or,
"That's not rap, so it's not cool."
    Or,
"How do you understand screamo? You can't even hear what they're saying properly, it's not really even music."
    Or,
"Wow, that is so dark, you must be emo."
    Or,
"Pop is all about sex and drugs."
    Or,
    "Country is lame."
    Or,
"You don't even know that language, (when songs are sung in another language and/or you don't understand the languages' lyrics), so why do you even listen to it?"
Just because songs are a different genre to what you like or are sung in another language that you don't understand, doesn't mean that someone else doesn't like them. Just because you don't find any meaning in a certain genre or song doesn't mean that there isn't one or isn't one to someone else. Maybe the song doesn't even have a meaning, maybe it's just for fun. Despite the song or genre, it may have helped someone through their tough times. So don't hate on a song, artist, band or genre just because you don't think it's good or because you don't see meaning or how it could help someone.
Now, I'm not saying you should like all music or be friends with someone who has a different music taste to you, but, don't hate on someone else's music taste if it's different to yours or make fun or exclude the person for listening to it. You can express your opinion on the music, but don't just straight up hate on the music, artist/s or the person listening to it.

People are entitled to think their opinion is the only right one when it comes to music. My aunts husband forces me to like turkish music just because I am turkish. But I don't find anything I relate in them don't even like their lyrics. They think I am shallow for listening to foreign rock/metal bands or songs like this.

Generally not fond of Christian bands and I think icon for hire is an excellent model for religious minded people to keep religion and music seperate. Also like how she is real with her lyrics and doesn't shy away from plugging in personal problems (ie-iodine) into her lyrics.

    • @beansproutuncreative
      @beansproutuncreative Před 10 lety +10

True in a sense that their songs don't blatantly talk about Jesus. But there's no doubt their music and lyrics are influenced by their relationship with God. Owl City is a Christian but his lyrics have more subtle references when those references do appear. And then there are some songs, with him and others, where it's just a fun song about whatever.
But I do like their involvement with personal struggles. It makes the music more real and better to connect with than some stupid song about getting wasted and/or partying.

I find this song a bit weird, because in the lead singer's book, _Turn your Pain into Art,_ she states how she supposes she should turn back for rock which is meant to be her band's aesthetic (which is a reference to her always being tied to whatever label her band receives; female-fronted, Christian rock, etc), but in truth she's a total pop lover. She even went as far to claim that she has more Britney Spears albums than any other person. So to talk about how pop culture kind of brainwashes you (to which I can't disagree with) is a bit hypocritical. Nonetheless, I seriously can't get enough of Icon for Hire.

    • @Wind_Cursed
      @Wind_Cursed Před 11 měsíci

(I know I'm 5 years late to this comment, but I feel like I should put this here)
"Pop culture does nothing for me
The American Dream, mainstream, just bores me
Cause I'm not like you, I'm immune, I'm immune
Say it over and over until it comes true
Pop culture does nothing for me
The American Dream, mainstream, just bores me
And we all act like we see right through it
When we all know we're addicted to it"
Isn't giving me the vibes of "Oh, Pop is awful". If it does relate to Pop music, then it's giving me vibes of "I should stop listening to so many Pop songs, they do nothing for me" but they can't seem to stop listening to it. Which gives me vibes of really liking something but wishing or telling yourself you don't like it or you can see beyond it. That might just be me though

I like this song, I also like their "supposed to be" such a sad song with a contradicting beat, amazing, and theatre that's a good one too. This song reminds me of this argument I have every now and then with a coworker, he does not get that i like what i like. I do not like women with dyed blonde hair and black eyebrows, they can not commit to dying it all, I know a lot of people do not care and do not mind I am not one of them. I have to remind him a lot of people are gay and I am not one of them, a lot of people like skinny jeans, I am not one of them, a lot of people look at their phones every half hour, I leave mine at home. I have a wide range of music i listen to I can not stick to just one genre. To be clear these people are free to do what they want I do NOT hate them. I am just not into it and it does nothing for me no matter how many people enjoy it. I have never been a fan of star wars or football. I have been told it is unamerican to not like both, i should like at least one of them. I do not care about being a part of that fan base either, though some of the people in that fan base are still pretty decent people. SO thinking this song is main stream and liking it is ironic is ONE point of view, I feel it is more about liking something because you like it not because everyone else does.

A lot of people kind of miss the real point of this song. "And we all act like we see right through it-" aka, all you 12-14 yr saying "pop is trash, so stupid, this is better!" "-when we all know were addicted to it." Now, let's take a step back. Pop is short for POPULAR. For things to be popular, lots of people have to like it or hate it. Now, when you walk up to a ID fangirl and ask if they like ID, if course there gonna say yes. People who hate it don't listen to it. Therefore they don't get counted in the millions of people who buy pop albums. So tell me again, why is this band real music? Because they are not popular/ you just like them better? Get off your high horse, just because you listen to a certain type of music doesn't make it better.

This just sounds like regular secular music , I guess they achieved what they were aiming for...blending in.

She isn't talking about the actual music/instrumentals for the most part, she is mainly speaking about how secular lyrics revolve around the same thing all the time, sex, drugs, revenge in relationships, one second lust relationships(which they call love), wealth, and women.

@Ani four years later, but these guys are definitely not metal they are a pop punk, and rock band with rap influences. Metal is stiff like Nightwish, Metallica or even Breaking Benjamin. BB is way heavier than IFH and is barely considered alt metal.
