  • The Philodendron melanochrysum is a common “rare” plant that is sought after, but many people struggle with in the beginning. In the video I share with you some care tips, common troubleshooting, and as usual I propagate this plant in water, soil, moss, and the air layering method. Stick around till the end as I show you a whooping 6 months update.

    I have such good success with propagating my melanochrysum, I put my success to using a prop box with a heat mat underneath grow light on top, planting the cuttings into perlite has been awesome as I have seen roots begin within three weeks and within 6-8 weeks they are ready to plant into their growing medium, I’m actually addicted to growing these. I live in a climate that has four seasons in one day with the least amount being summer so my indoor climate is cold during autumn/winter, we often have the fire going so it is dry so I have to have humidifiers going in the house for my plants regularly.

    I just got my first melano a couple months ago and it has TAKEN OFF. I knew that this plant was going to be one that started off small and would quickly overwhelm me with how large it is getting and so I thank you for making this video because I was not exactly sure how to go about trimming it back/taking cuttings from it. It’s quickly turning into one of my favorite houseplants though. I don’t want to speak for everyone in every region, but if you are looking for an easy to care for, beautiful, house plant, I would personally recommend this one.

    I wish I had the climate that you have! The humidity there must be amazing for plants. Here in Texas is dry for the most part and humid only during summer. Which is not enough. Then my house is mostly dry except when I use my humidifier. So much work to keep humid loving plants for me.☹️ But I love your videos and plants! Beautiful!

    I live in South Africa. Nelspruit. It gets very humid in summer. I have tried all sorts of propagation. The best one for me is to put your cuttings directly into your potting mix and then keep your eye on your cutting, keeping it moist and pest free. You don't get as much rotting and die off. If a cutting is not going to make it, it will die soon after propagation.

    I have a little dilemma, maybe you or someone can help?:
    I am trying to rehab a Melano that I had shipped about 5 months ago. It did not acclimate well and lost all its leaves within a couple weeks of arriving. The roots were still healthy (albeit kinda small) so I stuck the now naked stem in sphagnum moss and put it outside (I live in an area with a very warm, humid climate).
    It’s growing leaves but they’re very small, not even half the size the leaves were when I got it a few months back. It gets bright indirect sun (under a covered porch that receives good morning sun and afternoon shade) and it gets Liquidirt occasionally.
    How do I get the leaves to grow bigger?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před 3 lety

      It does take a bit of time to get bigger leaves. As side shoots usually revert to a much smaller age. But I would imagine that you got a few plants out of this? You seem to be caring for it right, do watch for spidermites. And finally just give it time... perhaps around a year to see decent sized leaves

    • @amelie9271
      @amelie9271 Před 3 lety

      @@onlyplants thank you! These are side shoots, so I guess it’s normal. I’ll just be more patient. 🙂
      I think I was comparing my regrowth to photos I was seeing other people post of their new growth from their propagations and getting confused as to why mine was so small.
      It’s doing great even if the leaves are small so I’ll just let it do it’s thing and be it’s usual gorgeous self. ☺️

    The browning in every shoot/unfurling might be because of misting, wet leaves can help the humidity but some bacteria's prefer to stay at cool and wet environment they might stay for too long and can rot those unfurling leaves. this applied different compare to wild because wild/natural habitat is more wide and spcae tallows to circulate air widely and properly. new shoot/leaf of my melanochrysum died before even unfurling and it's still inside its cataphyl now. I don't know if I should cut or just wait till new growth comes out... your plants are lovely, by the way. Thanks for sharing

      Sometimes they need to be helped along during unfurling. Until they are used to the environment and watering habits

    Omg it’s so beautiful! I just got a tiny leaf cutting. When you get more juvenile plants, how many years does it take usually to get to a more mature form like your melano?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před 2 lety +1

      Depends on your care. In high humidity, good light, and great watering and pest control maybe 4-5 years to reach monster size

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před 2 lety

      I bought it from an online marketplace. Just look for “clear plastic pot” in your search

    I had difficulty with propagating melano too. I think my first mistake is not enough light.
