I attended a conference in Nairobi last year and the amount of innovations coming out of Africa is amazing. The focus on getting the best practical products for their market is amazing and I think many developed and developing markets should take a note from them.
The thing about electric cars here in Europe is, that there are far too many "upper class" cars. I wouldn't by a huges SUV or a AM SLK powered by fuel either. We need more less fancy cars. Were are the Corsas, Ups or Citigos powered by electric? I know they excisit, but there are far to few of them. We looked for one on the used car market to replace my husbands car, but had to settle for a small petrol powered car in the end.
I think there's far too many expensive cars generally. Even a Golf that was supposed to for the masses sets you back a cool 40K EUR. Insane. Best deal by far rn I think are the Dacia hybrids. they're comparatively affordable, the lineup is great and you get a bit of both the advantages of having an electric and a combustion engine. I'll probably put an order in myself. As you said, pure EVs esp with decent range are way too expensive. People couldn't buy them if they wanted.
I don't know if you want to call the VW Golf upper class, but that's already more expensive compared to a basic Model 3. Renault has the electric Renault 5 starting at 25.000, there's the Renault Zoe, the electric small Peugeots, the new Chinese compact cars like MG etc. Second hand they are popular therefor a bit more expensive, but you easily save that on fuel, tax, maintenance and write off. The Corsa and e-Up are also around electric, but relatively new. There's a lot of choice already and a lot more coming.
America will be the last to transition to electric cars. People have a death wish they have to hold on to carbon emissions, the vehicle has to loud, intrusive and big ,they suffer from an identity crisis. I have little hope for the majority of Americans giving up their vehicles.

I disagree with the premise of a lot of these environmentalists. They fail to differentiate between important things, like fixing littering, and the idiotic crusade against fossil fuels.
BEV is underdeveloped tech and these manufacturer sold to us just to rake profit without any after sales service, so if your bateries pack is bust you must buy brand new one not only the bateries. Keep your ICE as long as you can until BEV industries can presenting fully developed BEV technology that won't give us range anxiety, blown or burned while park and batery pack 20 years waranty or much more

Currently a lot of PHEV vehicles include a warranty of 8-10 years for the battery, even though the general warranty is still only 3-5 years for the rest of the vehicle. There are some legitimate criticisms to be made about the complexity and cost of eventually replacing the batteries, but that is more of a general right to repair issue that also applies to newer ICE vehicles that use unibody construction and places parts in the vehicle in ways that are space efficient but difficult and complicated to service
That's why Nio takes full responsibility for the batteries in their cars. There's plenty of small-scale recyclers in the industry of renewing BEV batteries, but nobody that is at the scale that will soon be needed. Nio in China takes care of the full battery lifecycle.
