  • I hope this video is super helpful for everyone looking to improve their judo. Most of the time judo players suffer from a lack of technique but rather just knowing where to put their hands! I hope these grip fighting tactics really help not only judokas but also Jiu-Jitsu players as well!

    Tremendous video. So many coaches out there say to "get a grip" but it's very difficult to throw someone with a lapel only grip. Not so much with a sleeve only grip.

    • @TravisStevensgrappling
      @TravisStevensgrappling  Před 4 lety

      Yeah it can be hard coaches only have so much time. It’s important to make sure athlete and coach speak the same judo language?

  • @LanguageHelp

    Hey thanks for the left sleeve suggestion. I had my first legit throw ever today in randori. I'm a white belt. I grabbed the left sleeve, pinned it to the guy's side and shuffled left. I fought for the lapel and got a hold near the neck. I waited for him to break my grip. Once he started I slid my hand behind the neck and went for ogoshi. He was surprised but he smiled at me.

    Thank you for the great insight and tips Travis. It really stinks in easily the way you teach.
    I hope you don't mind me pimpin' Jimmy's gripping DVD 2.0 but it's the bible on the subject as far as I'm concerned. My wife bought it for me. I had his old one but because of the rule changes I guess he revised it. Appreciate the continuous content!!

    This is the way I've seen kids taught in Japan too, and I think most international competitors are probably familiar with this concept in ai-yotsu grip fighting and footwork. But it's one thing to know a concept -- it's another thing entirely to be disciplined about it in the heat of live competition while still maintaining offense.
    To me that was one of the hallmarks of Travis' style -- he had both the discipline to maintain good grip fighting habits, and ALSO the skill, tenacity, and physicality to force his offensive grips on his opponent within a reasonably fast time frame. I think Travis' 2012 Olympic match with Ole Bischof was so exciting because their grip fighting is a bit similar (both are aggressive and tenacious yet disciplined, both like to dominate the opponent's left shoulder / armpit while blocking the opponent's right hand, both have really good seoi nage); it was like watching two bighorn rams just smashing heads against each other.
    By contrast, Teddy Riner is also someone with very disciplined grip fighting, but sometimes I feel it takes him too long to make his offensive grip. Fortunately for him, once has has his perfect grip and positioning, he can send his opponents flying (or cower on all fours) with such a high consistency that he doesn't need to have super high output to win.

    Weirdly enough my intuition already told me to go for the sleeve first and exercise control through that. But then again I am a huge fan of O-soto-gari and for that the collar grip isn't all that necessary.
    I'm going to experiment with the conclusions of this video in my next randori.

  • @slavicvolk

    I asked you why not grip the collar first to get control and this video was the perfect explanation, thanks!

    Hey Travis, I just started Judo ( late in life at my current age of 47 ) here in Dallas Tx. a month ago. My question is this..what do you recommend for knee, hip and low back strengthening exercises to do at home. We don't have classes right now because of Covid-19, so anything to keep mobile is helpful. Thanks
