Cold Turkey Writer: A Distraction-Free App That Forces You to Write

  • If you get distracted when you're writing, join the club. It's one of the biggest struggles I deal with in my work.
    However, I recently discovered an app that can help put an end to those distractions. It's called Cold Turkey Writer, and it completely locks down your computer until you write the number of words that you specify.
    I'll be using this for pretty much all of my rough drafts from now on. It's cross-platform (Mac OS and Windows), and the best part is... it's free!
    You can get it here:
    getcoldturkey....
    My book "10 Steps to Earning Awesome Grades" is completely free, so check it out if you're interested in improving your grades!

    Couple of bonus tips:
    1) Personally, I don't set the word count goal to the number of words I actually need to write. Instead, I'll set it around 500 - that's enough to get me past the painful early stages of writing and into the flow state, where I'll most likely blast through that 500-word goal and keep going.
    2) Be aware of other distractions - like your phone. Use an app like Forest for that, or, if you need to, turn it off and put it in a drawer or something. Remember that it's the ease of access to distractions that counts!
    Also, this video took way less time to make than usual - I found this app while researching for another video and thought it'd be cool to share. If you guys liked it, I might do more quick videos showcasing singular apps in the future :)

    This helps me a lot for writing in my journal (which I also prefer typing). It doesn't really help me for other tasks like homework or term papers, because I constantly need to look up facts or find synonyms for words etc., so I use other programs while writing. But for journaling it's awesome. Thanks, Thomas! You're one of my favorite youtubers, your content is never disappointing!

    I love what you're doing with and have been a huge fan of you since the start of this school year. I regret not finding your earlier in my college career, but better late than never! I'm all revved up thanks to your coaching!!
    I find that what personally helps me most with getting good studying done is watching video's about studying. I have recently been so inspired by your work, that I have held a studying workshop for my department's freshmen recently and repeatedly referred to sources such as your website, channel, podcasts,etc... to find out more about studying and for them to see someone, who is passionate about learning, in action.
    As for this video, I have to agree that writing is something you just have to feel the flow for to genuinely do well. I reckon you'll get better as you go, but starting is never easy. I'm loving these short "quick update" type of video's that give us the impression you want to share whatever is helping you as fast as possible with us, which is really appreciated.
    That being said, sorry for the mega-long comment, I'm your Belgian fan and hope to see more great content like this from you!! Keep it up and enjoy yourself!

    This app works great on Windows 7 and Windows 8, however, with the new multi-desktop feature in Windows 10, all you need to do is open a new desktop and all your distractions are back. I suppose that helps with your research papers.

    So true @ writing being painful. I sometimes find the in-between stages difficult where I have to sift through the couple thousand words of junk attempts to find the gold, and then fill the gaps in with relevant, well-polished sentences, and the right research. Ugh. You can tell I'm having trouble with a theoretical essay atm.

    SelfControl is another great free app (for mac only), where you can customize a "blacklist" or use the default blacklist, that contains the main websites you procrastinate on (facebook, twitter, youtube, etc.). You can set a timer and it won't let you access those sites during that time (no matter with which browser you try)

    One advise I can give is to try this... write for 10mins, distract yourself for 5 mins, write for 10mins, distract yourself for 5 mins, keep alternating.. I use it for 6hrs straight, and I can get a lot of writing done with this sort of work-reward system. I'm trying to push it to 15mins of writing and 5 mins of distraction. It won't work for everyone because you're switching back and forth between tasks - not everyone can do it effectively!

    • @vulnerablegrowth3774
      @vulnerablegrowth3774 Před 7 lety +4

      That's the point. You shouldn't be researching when you're writing. The most efficient way is block time for research beforehand and then block time for writing. Switching between tasks will reduce your focus and increase the amount of time you'll be working.

    • @menace1782
      @menace1782 Před 7 lety +2

      The whole point of researching in particular cases is to know what your content should include, otherwise your writing won't be as good as it could.

    • @vulnerablegrowth3774
      @vulnerablegrowth3774 Před 7 lety +10

      WuTang118 Exactly. That's why when I write a report or my thesis, I do all my research beforehand so I'm 100% focused on writing when I write. I will definitely need to edit afterwards, but if I start thinking about editing and looking up facts while writing, I won't be as effective. The technique I'm describing is what most top performers use. I used to research while writing, too, but eventually realized I save more time and do better work when I do one at a time.

    I've heard about this before and I may try it out. I always do my writing in timed sprints, but this may help even more.
    I honestly would love to be able to write everything by hand, and the two are nearly as fast for me (writing by hand is even more "natural" for my brain), but I need to write 50-100k words projects and typing it all out after having handwritten it is both boring and double the work (plus, I always start writing my own new thing when I do this, so I'll get to 30k and suddenly the story is so different that the other 20-40k is useless).

    I have to have a pen and paper for a rough draft! Once I got that then I move on to typing. Why? I find that writing it, although slower, gives me time to choose my words wisely and I have more time to ponder about what I really want to say and how to say it. This may sound strange but seeing it finished on paper first motivates me. It may just be that I am old school and had to write my papers all the time. But this does sound like a great app to use when I'm at the computer because once I get on there it is easy to diverge. Can't wait to use it!

      Carmen Hello, how are you? I'm a English learner and I want to practice my English I wonder if you would like to talk to my by skype? Or Facebook?

      Maybe you could set small word count goals, and then just insert English placeholder words for the things you're not sure on? Then, once you're done, you could go back and look them up.

    Hello there. Thanks for your work Thomas, all of it incredibly useful. I would like to ask how did you add the subscribe button and the other sticker ( since 2.09) I am especially interested in the subscribe button, I think it is super cool how the profile picture transforms in the whole rectangle.
    Thanks for your time! And thanks again for your super useful channel and blog.

      Those are part of a new end card editor feature that will most likely replace annotations in the future. Right now it's in beta, so there's a slow rollout of channels getting access to it. I got it recently; you'll probably get it in the near future! More details in this vid: czcams.com/video/8YE29bqybh4/video.html

    Hello people :) I'm trying to get more focused with my studying and I'm trying to transform my youtube subscriptions into an inspirational and positive place. Do you guys have any suggestions? It's nice if it's study tips but motivational videos are also awesome.

    Thank you for this program tip, will head over to download it now! Do you know of any programs that allow you to keep certain programs open? for example: evernote, which has all of my research notes in it.
    Love your videos, thanks a ton!

    But how do you do research(look and online journals and stuff) and type when you can't open even one tab....... this is unrealistic
    but I remember cold turkey have ones that can block out certain webpages like youtube or something and you can set time for it

    but for those like me with a bit of bouncing concentration when we get bored (which happens frequently with boring school work and physics where i always get stuck) , do you have any tips?
    i find texting in small bursts keep me going but slow answers or no one able to talk makes it easy to drift onto pinterest or alike for far too long.
    please help
