- AWAL a unique distributor. They have a rigorous application process and often turn down artists who aren't ready to join their exclusive platform. Fortunately, after getting banned from Distrokid, I applied for AWAL distribution and got accepted as an AWAL Core artist.
In this video, I outline a very important concept: Showing Trajectory as an Artist. The staff at AWAL look for trajectory when weighing your application and I go over exactly what you need to do to put your best foot forward and get accepted to AWAL distribution.
Enjoy!

I just found your channel today, mostly because i was looking to ditch distrokid. Perfect timing, great content Ryan !!
I love it when it works out like that!! You've come to the right channel for anti-distrokid videos haha
😂😂 after 2 years of using it, as a label profile for me AND 3 other artists i found out they take down my music after i stop uploading (joke Is on me for not checking). That was a big no no for me
Yeah!! Finally! I waited for this video😄
Haha yeah it took a while :) Hope it was worth the wait!
Thank you so much for this video Ryan, it is something that every artist will find helpful, a great insight!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your AWAL information!
AWAL operates on the same basis like major record companies with the difference that you don't pay the majors when you submit to them.
Thanks for the tips and updates
My pleasure!
this was really helpful
Thanks Elijah! So glad 😊
And tq for your videos i learnt alot 💓🤗🔥
You're very welcome!
qualty advice for sure
Hi Rayn thank you for your videos is really helpful I wanna know do AWAL do royalties splits
Thank you for these videos
Thank you for information
Hey I have A question How does Music Video Works? But Great content
Love your vids and thanks so much for the help, Im stuck on this thought and I was hoping you had a vid on it. so joe makes a song..... joe gets his song distributed with awal or distrokid or whatever..and uploads it to YT.. he then gets a message from a YT channel (ie trap nation, Mrsuicdesheep, vevo) and they want to upload joes track on their channel, How does joe go about this. can he simply just give them the track and work out a deal (exposure for the song, or some percent) or does the licensing get in the way, or does a collection agency collect x amount. How to give someone your song correctly in order for the money to get equally disributed, or whatever terms are set, how to set terms like that with BMI and stuff, im just alittle confused I hope this makes sense no worries if you dont understand my question or know , thanks
The band I’m managing has had a steady 100k+ monthly listeners all year on Spotify with a steady climb. Now at 160k+ monthly listeners, and growing social media platforms, we’re wondering if there’s any way we can skip to AWAL+ or have a guarantee with trajectory. I understand there’s still a chance we won’t get into AWAL, but the band matches everything in this video. We’re looking at getting to around 250k monthly listeners by summer of 2021, and I personally just feel like AWAL Core might not be worth taking the 15% out of our music that we can keep for marketing, recordings, etc. I don’t want to transition to AWAL if there’s no guarantee to move to the middle-tier, since we can really already do everything that AWAL Core does. The biggest thing we’d like to have is just a little funding, and getting on editorial playlists. Maybe help with traditional blogs, articles, but I can work on that for them. Thanks for the layout on this video!
Hey Trev. Unfortunately I don't think you'll ever get that guarantee. The good news though is that you can start by just applying to AWAL and seeing if you get in.
Then the next step is just distributing ONLY a few songs with them so that you don't have to lose 15% on your whole catalog.
That way you can slowly get on their radar with minimal risk. This is just a suggestion, let me know what you decide to do!
@@IndieMusicAcademy Ryan, sorry for the late response. I appreciate you getting back to me and clearing up everything. I thought my question sounded a little off and didn’t want to make it seem like I was 100% on us getting in. I appreciate the response back and will do the steps you’ve suggested. Also, the 15% would sound fine if there weren’t 5 members in the band + me, forgot to say that in the first comment hahaha. Thanks for your help!
Thanks for this
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
I applied for awol. I don't have any traction yet with fans but the music is great. Should be interesting to see if we get accepted
so how was it?
If I have a huge catalog of unreleased music I want to release over a year would AWAL be the choice? I dont have a big following and have been a apart of so many different projects that i am wanting to essentially release everything under my name.
do most of the people that submit to awal get accepted or whats the percent rate
What does it mean on awal site, ‘we only partner with a select group of artists?
Bro. How can I get Content ID from AWAL?
Also, if you use AWAL and then find a sync job...does AWAL take 15% even thou you found that job on your own??
Thanks for great advice. I just looked as you said if you are not found on Google that's bad for music distributors to find you and my CZcams musician channel shows up in two places when I type in my name and music as keywords. and near the top of many with the same name as mine. Is that a good sign? Who put me there? Does CZcams do that for you as I never did. I reached 100 subscribers is that why? Thanks for a very informative video!
Hey! Is it possible to send my music to a sync music library if I join AWAL?
When I try to submit my music to AWAL, for some reason I can't go to the next step, even after reading the ToS until the end...why is that?
What kind of music can we use in this distributor?
Does AWAL core give you opportunities to submit your work for Sync?
Thanks for your videos I’ve made my decision to go with AWAL…
I am also trying to get my music into film on that note should I put my music in AWAL first then BMI or ASCAP, What do you recommend ?
I remember that CDBaby does something like align you with several means to promote your music. I think they call it a "Mechanical License" and other rights most distributors do not prepare your music for. A year later, which route did you go so far?
I have always wondered if it is possible to make it in the music industry completely on your own? without management. I know AWAL is more a distributor/semi management but as a inspiring musician with a strong work ethic I do start to wonder if management other then yourself is the key to success? or if you could be just as successful managing yourself (sorry if this seems like a stupid question as someone who's new to the industry I know it's a competitive game!)
Most things in life are a game / a dance / a process... the music industry is no exception. But it's definitely possible to re-write the rules of the game and become a success in your own way by managing yourself, but just understand that you're playing by a different set of rules that will not completely overlap with the established industry. That means that you'll need to own your own fanbase (via mailing list and social media) and not rely on getting a record deal to provide you with fans.
I got accepted into awal, but I have a few questions. On distrokid I would click the platforms I want my music on. There’s no option on awal to click that.. so how would I know? Cuz for some music platoforns I submit to them directly, since it helps me with editorials
hey, are you able to select which stores you want your release to appear in?
Is it possible for one guy how has no website but has spent the last 10 years of his life bettering his music production skills and pouring his life into it with a really great tune to submit and plenty to come to get on board there isn’t such thing as a local Sean where I live how the head do I get my music/life’s work out there? Wont go to Distro kid as I have been put off by the scenario reason you that happened to you
Bro thanks for the video but I don't understand something, if Awal wants the established artists only, so what's the point of signing to them? I mean if I had already so many fans and listeners, why do I need the Awal?!
I'd love to further this convo via email>> Support@indiemusicacademy.com
After this month's EP, I'm hoping to switch from DistroKid to AWAL (just applied!) So....perfect timing?
did you get accepted?
@@sparrow_posts_stuff nope
Am I right that it sounds like AWAL may not be suitable first time release? How would you have a lot of seo material (press etc) if you’re just about to release music for the first time
You're totally right. It's hard to show your track record as an artist if you're just starting from the beginning.
@@IndieMusicAcademy thanks for clarification, in that case would there be another distributor you would recommend?
@@gabrielhues late but too lost is lit
If I want to produce Trailer Music do I need distribution or can I just find a Music Library?
This is a good question
My biggest question: have you seen any definite improvement in your stream numbers (or licensing, placements, etc) since using AWAL? I get tired of hearing about the clout a company has when it doesn't really benefit most people other than feeling they're hangin-with-the-cool-kids justifying taking 15%.
AWAL will not get you more streams. It's like saying that a red cars go faster than blue cars-getting streams all about what you do as the driver/artist and having a marketing plan. What AWAL WILL give you is a reliable platform that will actually get your music released with no up-front costs.
Besides writing out all your analytics - from your video I don't see they do that much? I mean they don't promote your music, they just tell you in stats what is going on - did I miss something?
I think they do more than that. I came across an artist that only had 2k monthly listeners and only a few thousand views on youtube but he has a write up on billboard website and spotify placed him on one of their playlists (those are big things for an artist with not much of a following) also he was on bbc 2 radio. So it appears they get you connections even if you dont have the following required yet
The only question is if you have amazing music, amazing art, huge following, etc why would even need AWAL at that point? lol to give them some % of your money flow?
I don't think an artist ever "needs" anything to grow their fanbase and create their art. An argument can be made for going off the grid so to speak by signing up for Bandcamp.com and keeping a massive mailing list and not even using a distributor. You can make loads of money that way-aka a full-time career. The point of AWAL is to do things a little more along the route of being your own label.
mmh. so why should i join awal with making at least everything myself, begging them to like me and still pay royalties? Then the option to find a dedicated indie label, that really supports me, not judge me with unclear terms and style idea behind it? That really doesnt make sense to me :-)
Swing the awal invite
I have more than 10 years making music however awal didn't accept me but hey have accepted people I wonder how the did it because they don't sound that great and they have barely in this for two years, what could it be?
I have awal
they only care about numbers
@@soulless1330 some don't even have followers so I don't understand xd
@@IsaBellaschmusic they definitely know someone in there. i tried to apply few days ago and they said no lol
Same! 🧐
Great advice, but dispiriting all the same. It is sad that these companies no longer invest in the art itself. Musicians today pretty much have to be their own label. Sigh. Thanks though. I may have to look somewhere else besides AWAL, as I'm starting all over again after a long lay off. I really do enjoy your content.
Thanks Malo! Yes, AWAL is just one option of many and definitely not a requirement.
The site is not working anymore

Can we submit cover songs to Awal??? Coz Spotify & Deezer allows them
Lol I remember asking for this way back thank you so much
Ask and you shall receive (eventually...) haha
@@IndieMusicAcademy I GOT IN!
mate I am gonna be real and say your information is helpful but a lot of us right now are not really doing the first realistic step to being an established musician and that is having a team to help you out in all of your business sectors, As a musician your focus should be the creatives and talented ideas for your next musical projects. and your team which will be managers, Assistants, Accountants and Lawyers will be handling the other issues which tend to take up a persons time and mental power away from the core of what its all about. Making music.
Now I know that we all do not have the funds for this, I don't as well But Just know that you shouldn't push expecting to become the next drake, But push to get to a position where you can make a survivable amount with your music career
