- The Toyota GR 86 is important because it shows that someone still cares about having affordable fun sports cars. However, this car would be even better with more Toyota and less Subaru.

This video was filmed with in-ear, binaural microphones, so if you listen with headphones, it will sound like you're sitting in the driver's seat!

this car is excellent i don't know what you guys are thinking about a porche appreciating in value. This is no doubt the lowest cost of ownership sports car
That was the most critical review I have seen of the gr86. It is refreshing to not hear the same glowing review as everyone else. I'm still getting one
its refreshing to an extent but then the odd comparison didnt really line up at all. Also, a 987 cayman outside of this crazy used market will never be a collector car. they built too many and are completely common place to find, maybe the Spyder or R but certainly not normal 'S'
nice casual style video but a little confusing in your comparisons - I love my 22 BRZ 6MT, it's my only car, it can fit a full sized upright bass, it's RWD, it's the most analog new car 30k or under out there. Yup road noise sucks, stereo sucks, not great gas mileage and it's not super fast but I didn't want FWD, test drove Mazda 3 T but no manual and too numb. All the other cars you mentioned are FWD, the 987.1 has no cargo and it's 16 years old or so ($$$ repairs/upkeep). It's a pretty unique car for these times.
I have to disagree heavily on choosing Porsche over this. The consumables and running costs when tracking this 86 are going to be way lower because the parts are much cheaper and the aftermarket is enormous. In addition basic maintenance and access to the engine will make it much simpler and much cheaper to conduct when compared to a Porsche. In addition that Porsche is 15+ years old and this 86 is brand new with warranty for same price. For any person who has low to medium income the twins are a no brainer.
Yeah, but a spoilt child might choose a Porsche
Perfect review, happy to have more lightweight manual sporty rwd options. Hope you guys review a ND in future too.
i really like this GR86 over the original 86. its so exciting and i think it would be a great 2nd fun car if you had a practical daily
Those hard shifts like that a normal thing when going full throttle?
No, thats a driver issue
Substitute Topher uncensored version here haha
saying a civic si is more of a cohesive package than this is ridiculous. it's more every day friendly but that does not make it more cohesive.
you really learn how to drive
How so?
How tall are you? I’m 6’2 and a skinny white boy💀 I’m worried about if I’ll have enough leg and head room
I'm coming from a 2006 Honda accord. I'm getting this car next year Jan. Do u think I'll like this?
I've had my 6MT GR86 for 6 months and as much fun as I had with it doing HPDE and mountain road trips, I'm finding it unsatisfying as a daily just like you guys. Planning to trade it for one of the last new DCT Veloster Ns this month, then maybe moving on to a GR Corolla once they're more obtainable. I'm near the top of a local dealer's wait-list for one of those, but I still doubt it'll be sooner than a year before I can get an allocation. I'm also worried it won't be quite as fun as the Veloster N, so I want the option to keep one if that's the case.
EDIT: Bought the last Performance Blue Veloster N that was selling for MSRP within 500 miles from me.
Do you mean it's not that fun to drive it around running errands? When I had my Miata NC, even just driving it a few blocks to get some groceries it was fun as hell.
@@Briguy288 More or less. Even after 6 months, the clutch helper spring, rev hang, and non-linear/inconsistent throttle map make it unintuitive to drive smoothly. I blamed myself as the driver at first, but I never had this much trouble mastering a transmission in any of the other 8 manual cars I've owned (4 of which were Miatas). The aftermarket could fix these issues, but I don't want to deal with the hassle, honestly.
@@danlee3939 that's disappointing to hear. A big part of the Miatas appeal was the throttle response, clutch, and rawness. Would have hoped that the GR86 had that as well.
@@Briguy288 The throttle mapping is unique to the GR. They wanted to car to feel more aggressive or "spirited" so they messed with that. The BRZ has a much more linear throttle mapping. The clutch assist spring is also easy to remove, maybe 20 minutes. If you had fun in the miata you'll have fun in one of these. It's the people coming from bigger power that get bored so easily. Though I had a 360whp STI and I went to a 2013 BRZ and loved every second of it before getting my 22 BRZ, so IDK what these people are talking about.
I think the car is super fun as a daily! Can punch it through corners, it's NA so no turbo lag and RWD, it's so much fun!! I've had mine almost a year now, I did install the mtec clutch spring but actually went back to OEM. I will admit mastering the manual transmission on this car wasn't the easiest but it's also really rewarding when you do.
This car seems to remind me of a 1st gen IS300. Have you compared it to Substitute Topher's IS300?
How's the suspension compared to Q60S Red Sport? The hardness and road feel.
Gr86 is probably much better with road feel
9:58 what’s goin on the left lane ?😂
really nit picking, car is fine
The fake noise doesn’t sound fake
Probably because it's not fake. :) It's "tuned" or "shaped", but not a recording being played.
That’s not a drift..😂
Craxy how you guys are allowed to over take on the right in america. But sadly people don’t know how to drive there. That truck and suv should all be on the right lane.0
Even used these Gr86 are going for $40k. Just get a BMW 230i. For 40$k you can even throw on some options and blow the doors of the off the gr86. 230i would be a much better daily, looks mature, has some good power, great handling, usable back seats, better interior, ect. These gr86 are good but highly over rated when you look at what else you can get on the market for the same price. Granted the car market is wonky right now in 2022.
$30k new and $40k used. What a weird world we live in.
If only they still offered the 230i in stick 😔
as far as i know 320i is hevy its not LSD and parts are double pice of 86 so ...86 wins :*
@@wildfrog5803 you can option BMWs ELSD, which is one of the best LSDs on the market and brimbo brakes. Also the BMW won’t overheat on a race track like the Toyota. Even the the guys making this CZcams video think the BMW is better than the GR86. Hope you get a chance to drive one some day.
@@postalpancho and how much u pay for all that shit? ESLD cant beat Torsen LSD how much will u spend on parts? u will get through set of pads in one session cuz bmw is hevy
Not the best daily. Even the automatic feels gutless, unless it's in track mode and using paddle... Wish it had my 10th Gen Civic's 6MT and K20C2 NA engine...then it'd be the ultimate budget friendly sport car that you can daily. Cruising down the country highway while doing over 50mpg makes it a very nice daily (Civic). 2.0L NA Civic engine will have less HP for the top end, but it'll have better initial response and similar mid range. (I'm off in a tangent cause of the stupid silicone issue).
