    THE REVIEW FOR LEGEND OF RUBY SUNDAY IS COMING OUT SHORTLY
    Edit: Apologies for this video coming out later than expected and being shorter than I would like it to be. My wifi went out on Wednesday and I just got it back up. On the positive side it let me get ahead on some projects I had fallen back on. On the negative side… my wifi went out on Wednesday. Nevertheless I hope you enjoy!

    I warmed up to Rogue a little bit when I realized the moment Rogue sacrifices himself for Ruby is really the moment the Doctor properly falls in love with him, but after two viewings I still think it’s one of the season’s weaker offerings.

    For me, it felt like we once again aren't getting a Ruby and Doctor episode, they were once again seperate. It felt to me like an episode you would get in between companions.
    I also just had trouble believing the relationship here, the dude was a bounty hunter and the doctor seemed to have to problem with that? The Doctor is always crying over ruby in this season, but seems to have no problem just running off and letting her do her own thing, much more so than previous doctors.

    • @writeonshell
      @writeonshell Před 16 dny +1

      That would actually make sense in some ways (the "always a twist on the end" joke makes more sense after seeing more cameos), and I wonder if Disney swapped them for timing purposes. I heard a robot that the devil's chord ended up releasing when it did to be near Eurovision. Then Bridgerton set Rogue just randomly came between part 1 and part 2 of Bridgerton series 3 which is weird timing if completely random.

    @14:00 you're sort of right, I think. I knew the running order seemed to have been messed with because there was the double episode with the musical right before Eurovision, so I had been looking out for any episodes which seemed to be definitively after The Devil's Chord. I think that it was probably meant to go Space Babies, Rogue, Boom (or Boom, Rogue, not too sure, because Susan Twist), 73 Yards, The Devil's Chord, Dot and Bubble, and then the final. I don't think TDC can be after DAB as in TDC Ruby says the Doctor has an answer for everything, and in DAB we see that he doesn't, as he can't help the citizens of Finetime due to their racism.

    I think the point about "getting over the trauma" is a little iffy. You never really fully heal from certain trauma, you just learn to manage it. It's not like a minor physical injury, the memory will always be with you and inform your thinking and behaviours. Therapy helps with managing it's impact on your life, don't get me wrong, but you don't "get over" things like that fully.

    • @dwfan91-
      @dwfan91-  Před 15 dny

      in the context of a long running fictional tv show, you have to make a choice: do you get over it or do you not. you can't pick and choose. every single behaviour he does makes sense if you ignore bigneration and its implications. if you do factor that in, it is simply clunky from a storytelling perspective. you've gotta tie yourself in knots to try and justify it when the truth is, it just makes more sense without it. 13th dr was very reserved, she regenerated and now is much more open >

    • @TheMellowSide
      @TheMellowSide Před 15 dny

      @@dwfan91- Like dealing with trauma in real life, I don't think that this is that binary a decision. I think what they're aiming to do with that bigeneration "you fixed yourself" stuff is reduce the amount of dwelling on the past traumas of the doctor so that the show can move forward and remain fresh, and giving 10 some emotional closure (as he specifically was one of the most gloomy doctors at points), while still characterising the Doctor as someone with depth.
      I don't think it's tying the story in knots, unless I'm missing something really all he did was bring up his past poigniantly in a scene that's there to show that Rogue and the Doctor are kindred spirits. I think that's arguably quite healthy behaviour to be able to talk about it. Being over it doesn't mean never talking about it again.

    • @mithril3966
      @mithril3966 Před 14 dny

      Yeah as someone with cptsd that shit sticks around even after you've been in therapy for a long time. It is not a binary thing at all. I think if they treated it like that it would be a lot less believable. Honestly I think it's a kinda harmful misconception. You can make a lot of progress and still backslide sometimes. It's a lifelong process. Getting retraumatized is also a thing. I know personally being in certain situations again can send me spiraling even if I'd been doing really well before. With the sort of stuff the Doctor's dealing with it's not something you can just get over like that. You can tell he's worked through a lot. He's able to talk more openly about things in a genuine way without getting triggered by it and he's much better at showing his emotions in general. But he still has some questionable coping mechanisms at times. Honestly he reads a lot like many of the traumatized friends I know who have come out the other side of things and worked through stuff but are still shaped by it.

    @thenewdarling1 Před 16 dny

    Segun Akinola’s soundtrack absolutely slapped, he knocked it out of the park and I honestly think it’s the most consistently good thing about the Chibnall era! I feel…. middling towards the Chibnall era, but online opinion is so polarised about it I don’t feel like it’s worth arguing about with most people. Season 12 had a lot of bangers, the Angels episode of Flux and the episode about Partition was peak. I want an entire season of the Fugitive Doctor. I think a lot of the stuff in between that was just.. kind of a bit boring
    My pet theory is the complete lack of marketing did affect how much people thought about it. RTD2 has really built a hype train that feels like the original revival. Compare that to Chibnall era where I would find out (as a self-professed fan) about entire seasons of Doctor Who as they were airing. Combined with the inconsistent schedule, and it just isn’t on people’s radar for most of the year

    Obviously your opinion is your own, but part of the reason why River Song's character worked so well for me is that beneath all the Moffat-woman-cliches, is a woman that is genuinely in love with the Doctor no matter what face they have, because as Nardole quoted: "Virtue is only virtue in extremis. This is what he believes, and this is the reason above all, I love him. My husband. My madman in a box. My Doctor."
    Further than that as well, River Song knows her shit. She isn't reliant on the Doctor (and in a similar vein why I liked Clara's confidence despite it getting her killed).
    It's interesting that you mentioned the River Song trapped the Doctor into being husband and wife, because about half of her appearance is on how the Doctor does NOT trust her. Even after rebooting the universe together, the Doctor still didn't trust her in the Impossible Astronaut. Throughout season 6 he was only flirty with her. Even the wedding at the finale was a last ditch to bring River into the fold and keep his death appearance. I'd argue the Doctor is only truly in love in Angels take Manhattan (I hated the slap but that's a general problem not specific to River. Moms really like slapping). So for me it took a lot of effort for both of them to come together as a couple and so personally, I think that's the opposite of being forced.
    As for the episode itself, the truth for me is that I never gave a shit about cgi quality. People rambled about Black Panther's cgi while I was oblivious to it. But you should consider that this was directly after Heaven Sent/Hell Bent where they had amazing cinematography (those Gallifrey shots def weren't cheap). And Return of Doctor Mysterio was a whole year later (unfortunately robbing us of 4 Capaldi seasons).
    I can see why most of Husbands of River Song felt like running around until the climax, but I think the little conversations here and there (like at the dinner table) is just so precious. We went through multiple seasons not knowing who River is and if she's genuinely good or playing a trick on the Doctor (which turns out the be both) but in this episode the dynamic is switched. We see the view point of someone who was unsure if the love of her life can ever love her back. Like I said before the moment in Angels take Manhattan is the first true showcase of the Doctor's love, which was a relatively recent event according to River's diary, and she even felt conflicted when 11 asked her to travel with him. But with 12, with just the one line: "Hello Sweetie", she knows that this Time Lord cares deeply for her.
    Lastly, this last quote just solidifies it for me: "No, Doctor, you're wrong. Happy ever after doesn't mean forever. It just means time. A little time." After loosing Clara and going through 4.5 billion years just because he couldn't let go, it's amazing to see The Doctor and River ending on such a good note. 24 years together is not forever, and it's not even long for beings like The Doctor, but it is still a happy ending (also reaffirmed in the next episode when he says "Everything begins again too, and that's, always happy").
    Like with my comment on Twice Upon a Time, I don't expect to change your opinion, but I hope this makes you see the episode under a different light. At the end, The Doctor and River -both lived- happily -ever after-
    Anyway, Rogue and the Doctor made me giddied finally seeing an mlm couple on Doctor Who (Jack and Ianto was great but I don't count it)

      I feel like you're not wrong in the slightest. In fact I don't hate or even dislike River Song. As I say in the video I even think that 90% of the episodes she's in are incredible 8-9/10s. I just don't really *love* her, and I think that's just down to vibes. Obviously she is a very beloved and successful character so it doesn't really matter what I think, again it comes down to those subjective criticisms that I was talking about in my last video

  • @Otherversian
    @Otherversian Před 10 dny

    Honestly, I think that the plot twists were super predictable and tropey and that the episode was all the better for it. It's a classic doomed romance. You *know* Rogue doesn't make it out; someone not from present day earth accepting an offer to travel with the Doctor is always a death sentence. But you don't know how, just yet, so that keeps you watching.
    When they recalibrate the trap to hold more than the 4 known Chulda, you realise exactly what's going to happen. Rogue is going to take the plunge with them; but you don't know how he'll end up there, so you keep watching.
    And when Ruby is trapped in it, it clicks. Almost immediately, for me. 5 Chulda, and Rogue is going to switch with Ruby. It's obvious, but it's engaging, and it's perfect for that. When you watch a tragedy, you know how it's going to end but you can't help but mourn anyways. You root for Romeo and Juliet in spite of knowing they both die. As Hadestown puts it, you read the same story day after day hoping the ending will change.
    I knew exactly what was coming around every corner on my first watch of Rogue, but I don't consider that a flaw. I think it's good writing.

    Rogue was a good episode yes and there were moments that I loved however for me personally I wasn't a fan of it and I will admit it is solely because of the era it is set in. I really dislike regency era and find it boring but that is just me. So is it a good episode yes will I rewatch it no same as I don't rewatch Girl in the Fireplace they are just not dor me episodes.
    As for the Chibnall era I am one who actually enjoyed it on the whole. Did it have it's bad points yes, could the writing have been better sometimes yes. However overall I did enjoy it and will revisit it when binge watching just skipping the episodes I didn't like much.

    your least favorite???? bro it has jonathan groff that should be enough to be in top 1, the doctor being gay just make me happy. You dont care about Rogue??????????? he´s the new captain jack but better cuz jonathan is a decent human being, bro is so tasteless in this one
