Just by not overpaying and overextending any new contracts, the Canucks won.

    That rarely works out.

People react as if FA and resigning guys works like it does in NHL video games.
People will complain and say why didnt they sign this guy who is better than the guy we signed and that we shouldve signed player x or z. Yet those people never stop to think "Maybe player x or z didnt want to sign in Vancouver". Tavares was apparently offered more money to stay with NYI than what he ended up signing for with Toronto. You can put out the highest dollar offer to a FA, but that doesnt mean he will sign, real life isnt like NHL 24.
Perhaps Lindholm simply didnt want to be the #3 center in Vancouver when he could be the #1 center in Boston and still make just as much money. Maybe Marchessault didnt want to play in Vancouver, maybe Geuntzel wanted more money to play in Vancouver than what he signed for in Tampa. We dont know what discussions were had between management and players and their agents.
For all we know the Canucks may have tried signing some of the prettier FA"s available but their agents just might have said "My client is interested in playing for your team.". Then there is nothing that can be done.
Not every FA is willing to sign for your team, just because a guy is a FA doesnt mean you have a chance to sign him.
Some guys simply wont come and play for you no matter what you offer or what you say.
DeBrusk may have been the only top 6 winger willing to sign a reasonable deal to play in Vancouver.
All things considered, I am quite pleased. Lindholm was good, but he wasnt better than Miller or Petey. paying nearly 8 million for a guy to center your third line is a bad deal, and its clear he wasnt working as a winger. I think the Canucks badly needed more depth on the wing, not center and DeBrusk fills that need.
Zadorov was the one that really hurts, he ended being impactful on this team. However, I remember a lot of fans hating the Zadorov trade, claiming he was a bottom pair guy that we overpaid for, a chaos giraffe 2.0. That persisted throughout the season as fans would call him a liability everytime he took a penalty for a bad hit, or took himself out of position. The playoffs is where he really ingratiated himself to the fans, and maybe it was just lightning in a bottle. I liked the guys attitude, his energy and pushback, though its not as if he was a major factor in our success during the season, remember, we were at the top of the league before we acquired him and we can do so again. We also took Edmonton (a cup finalist), to game 7 without our Vezina nominated goalie. The Canucks have a good team, we have two centers that have recently had 100 point seasons, we have the Norris trophy winning defenseman, a vezina nominee goalie and the Jack Adams winning coach.
The canucks have improved at wing, slightly downgraded at center, and have stayed relatively the same on defense.
Time will tell if sacrificing center depth to improve depth on the wing is the right call and if going for depth on defense rather than stacking the top 3 guys is the better choice.
I think the Canucks did well, and I believe DeBrusk will improve in Vancouver with more opportunity, a new system, and quality guys like Miller, Petey, and Hughes to play with. I understand some fans having concerns, but its not like we were going to sign every guy that every other fan wanted. We needed to stay competitive in the FA market and not be the only team not making moves. We will ice a competitive team that could be better or worse than last season and hopefully its the former.
    Go Canucks Go!!!

Younger player in DeBrusk, didnt overpay too many additions, and with what the training staff was able to do with certain players last season gives me some optimism that this could still be a competitive team. That being said, thet could pull off something really impactful at the next trade deadline to help us address more issues, but I'm willing to give this group a chance.

      @Uncle_Troy Před 2 dny

If Lekkerimaki and Pettersson aren't ready to crack this roster by March, we could very well see them put on the table come next Trade Deadline. When you look at the logistics of all the big deals and how only four big contracts are expiring within the next 6 years, this team could very well be all-in this year if they look good right out of the gates.

    • @Seriously_Unserious
      @Seriously_Unserious Před dnem +1

@@Uncle_Troy This team's financially set up for long term success with no big anchor contracts tying up too much money in marginal players. The only big contracts we have are for our top producing players now. Only the Conner Garland contract seems a bit steep, but given the development arc his career is on, and the insane chemistry he and Joshua gave with each other, Garland's contract doesn't look so bad. It'll look even better if he and Dak can crack the top 6 as Pettey's wingers next season and play like a top six line pairing. And if any centre can get those 2 producing like they belong in the top 6, it's EP40. Heck, if he could actually manage to get goals out of Mikheyev while he was still healthy, and only stopped being able to carry Ilya on his back when his knee blew out, he can get anybody scoring. And Garland's a legit playmaker and Jushua's got the size and soft hands to be a legit net front presence and the hockey sense to be a back door threat, giving his line mates options.

I look at it this way. The actual top end talent was downgraded imo. Losing Zadorov and Lindholm. Hurts. Essentially the on paper replacements there are Desharnais(the hulking Dman) and Debrusk(the top 6 forward.)
In actuality, we got 2 guys for the top 6 in the afformentioned Debrusk, as well as Danton Heinen who will definitely see some minutes with Boeser and Miller and maybe form a much improved top 6 from last year with Petey running a line with Debrusk and Hogs. Petey gets some stability with 40-50 goals(maybe more) on his wings as well as BOTH the wingers having a motor and tough to play against.
The 3rd line stays Blueger, Dak, Garzy as arguably the best 3rd line in the league(edmontons 3rd projected looks really good on paper now too)
4th line of Suter at C, likely Sherwood and with a rotating cast of whoever is either A playing good, or B healthy including the likes of Podz, PDG, Åman, lekkerimaki, bains etc.
With this look at it, the overall forward core in theory is much stronger than it was with Lafferty, Mikheyev and Lindholm etc gone.
I think overall, the Defense made a lateral move, with the subtractions and additions when comparing the top end of it, as well as the middle. Zadorov is better than anyone we brought in, but the totality of what we brought in, I think is around what went out. We now have the reigning Norris winner who is going to have another year of experience as well as the trophy on his resume. He WILL be better this year too.
I think goaltending, once Silovs is signed to paper, should be better at the NHL level for sure. I don’t need to get too deep into it, but we all know he was lights out this year in the playoffs. I think you lessen Demmers workload to 50-55 games max, and you give Silovs the rest of the starts 27-32 games. Demko gets rest throughout the season to hopefully stay healthy without too much pressure to be a workhorse because he KNOWS he has a potential stud to literally back him up. Silovs gets a good amount of actual experience so he doesn’t get stale by riding the pine, and it’s better completion than the AHL players he would face, albeit, more regularly.(plus he essentially triples his NHL career starts in a single season, which is big for his development)
Overall, in theory, on paper, and hopefully in practice(no pun intended) I think the Canucks are a better team going into this season, than they were after game 7 of round 2 against Edmonton.
    We shall see.

Noticeably improved offense across the board, obviously got Forbort and Desharnais to improve the PK, got Mikheyev off of the payroll with little consequence, and kept every UFA who was willing to stay for a good price. Defense is a bit worse overall, but you have to feel convinced that the Canucks can roll out four forward lines capable of scoring now after this overhaul to the roster. I think that the Canucks would have been feared a lot more around the NHL this year if only their special teams were a lot better, and these moves prove that the front office felt the same way.

Whether they're better or worse remains to be seen in October. For me the real question is, did they do all they could to avoid a collapse? I argue, yes. Without question. There wasn't much more they could have done. Some wanted Zadorov and others wanted the big fish Guentzel, but in both cases, you're throwing a lot of money at one guy, and becoming the Leafs of the West - at best. What Allvin did was make the Canucks a team no one in the entire league is going to want to play against with or without a lot of painkillers and ice on hand and a team that should be incredibly deep. Adding Heinen was probably the most important piece. He's an 18 goal scorer (several times) who plays a bottom 6 role. Teams will have a horrible time trying to decide which line they want to match their top shutdown unit against and whoever they leave to their 4th line is going to get destroyed. Yes, they could have used another top 4 defenseman, but like it or not, there's a salary cap. Pettersson at his age was going to get paid and there was nothing they could have done about that. They got Louie DeBrusk's kid to play with Pettersson and that sounds great to me. Again, Allvin since taking over has said he wanted to build a team that would be an absolute nightmare to play against, and overall, I think they're scarier than they were last year. They might not have the flash of Zadorov, but I'd rather deal with last year's team than this one. This Canucks team looks like they want to hurt you.

Ouch. dont think he's going to live up to that contract. He will get more opportunities in Boston but I don't think that contract will age well. Debrusk on the other hand is 27 and can still improve playing with an elite centerman. He also shows up in the playoffs and certainly can easily be worth the 5.5 aav for 7. A few we can probably sign for league minimum are:
    Blake Wheeler (my preference)
    James Van Riemsdyk
    Max Pacioretty
There is of course also Joe Pavelski. But he will ask for more than league minimum, and he will probably stay in Dallas. And he is 39. He said he will probably retire.

I'm going to say it since EVERYONE seems to be forgetting it: Ian Cole was LIGHTS OUT GOOD vs the Predators. He was going play for play with Myers on fishing pucks off the goal line that were heading into the net for goals against. Yes ye stunk vs the Oilers, especially early in the series, though he did improve in the last half of the series. He had 3 bad games in the playoffs, 3 mediocre games and 7 great games, but all people want to remember are the 3 bad ones. Yes he was bad in those 3 games, but let's not forget the good he did before that.
As to the change of personnel, I like the new guys coming in. Desharnais ticks the same boxes for potential physicality that Zadorov ticks, but he's younger and has more potential to improve with the right coaching and comes at a fraction of the AAV hit AND he didn't reject our offer only to sign an almost identical offer somewhere else after paying all that lip service to wanting to stay here. As for Forbort, he's a couple of years younger then Ian Cole, a bit bigger, and plays a very similar style to Ian from what I can tell, but a bit more physical.

It depends. Do you have regular season Lindholm and Zadorov or playoff Lindholm and Zadorov? Do you have last year's contracts or this year's contracts? I'll miss Casey DeSmith and Sam Lafferty, but I'm glad we are not paying the rest what they are getting this season.
If Jake DeBrusk gels with Pettersson, then that contract was a steal. Desharnais is a little overpaid, but if Tocchet get his size to work within our system, then I'm okay with the deal. They rest of the signings look good, as long as they play as well last year as they did this year.
Additionally, they finished in sixth place in the league last year. They don't need to get a lot better to compete for the Stanley Cup.
On the downside, in the Pacific, there are only two teams that have a real shot at first place, Vancouver and Edmonton, and Edmonton got better.

Lindholm didn’t fit and losing him makes the team fit better, he was a 3rd Lin center on a 3rd line that was already rolling without him. It's apples and oranges. last year's team was a proven product - despite the duds that we had. This new crew isn't. If the new group buys in and performs well to the standards of Tochet on up management like last year's team did - they should have a chance to win every game. If the players click with each other differently/more effectively than say the merry-go-round Pettersson faced - they should do well. If Demko isn't a powder puff and doesn't break like fine china like forever - they should do well. I agree with people who mentioned that we didn't give long contracts at 6-7-8-9-10 million just because. Which is a great departure. I think Allvin has done admirably with the lemons he had to put on the ice. And our farm team has been replenished and developed tremendously despite the cabinets being bare for so long. We have gone from NHL kryptonite the past many years where players didn't want to be in Van - to a contender that players are willing to come to because of management, coaches, and players. If the team continues to find a culture similar to what happened with the team in the mid-2000s and 2000 teens where the kids of players grow up together, the wives click together, and the players are all about the man in the foxhole beside you - then they will be a team of greatness. And maybe they will convince Aquillini to invest in a world-class practice facility that will convince more UFAs and other players to enjoy the incessant rain in Vancouver for 10 out of 12 months of the year.
