  • Philadelphia has officially banned wearing ski masks in public spaces, but some teens say their ski mask is what keeps them safe - and alive. Failure to abide by the new law means a $250 fine, but police have yet to enforce the ban, leading to confusion and anger among residents. In this week’s Stay Tuned, we hear from teens who say their rights are being violated, and from the Philadelphia city council member who crafted the legislation and defends the ban, saying it’s intended to reduce crime.

    I don't get it. So criminals will just cover their faces with something legal when it's crime time. Seems like not much thought went into this law, other than a precedent for stopping and searching one subset of subway riders.

    • @TDashem
      @TDashem Před 4 měsíci

      Yes you miss the point. The point is, normalizing a ski mask covering your face makes ppl more vulnerable to crime. For example, a person walking into a store at night wearing a black mask covering their face, should be considered suspicious. Not, "Oh,they're prbly just law abiding citizens exercising their right to look like they're about to pull a robbery. I'm sure it's fine." 🤞

    So criminals sometimes wear ski masks. They also sometimes wear hoods, gloves, coats, and other face coverings like bandanas, scarves, and medical masks. By this suspicion logic, all of those things could also be banned.
    This is another example of people wanting the government to outlaw something that makes them uncomfortable rather than deal with that they might be made uncomfortable sometimes. These people need to mind their own business. If they feel like some etiquette has been breached, they can always stand up for it and speak to the person with whom they have a problem. You can't just go through life with an allergy to confrontation.
    Also, these people wearing the masks are allowed to be or look stupid. They're allowed to be a basket case. You're allowed to think whatever you want of them. The role of government should not be akin to a child crying to mom to get their sibling in trouble. Leave them alone or work it out like adults.

      Companies have to put warning signs on plastic bags telling people not to put it over their head.

      We're selling ourselves out being so paranoid. Folks don't think for themselves.

    As an American who truly believes in individual freedom and liberty, it’s awfully difficult to rationalize fighting against the compulsory medical mask mandate while fighting for the ski mask ban.
    I don’t like the ski masks in public, but just because I don’t like the outcome, I cannot support banning them.
    There has to be a better alternative solution
