CRF300L Suspension Upgrade Race Tech G3-S Custom Shock

  • The CRF300L is a pretty good deal. Under $6000 for a new dual sport motorcycle in 2022 is amazing. But surely that savings has to have some compromises, right? Well anyone who's even sat on one can probably tell you what that compromise is. The suspension is just awful! It literally eats up about 1/3 of the rear travel just by taking it off kickstand. Sit on it and you'll lose another 1/3. And believe me, it doesn't get any better when you start to ride. It's floaty, soft, and has a disconnected feeling. It's like a cadillac from the 90's and back. That maybe nice in a big body sedan but a dual sport.. no. Luckily Race Tech has been on it and developed a number of parts to help. In this video will be changing the shock out for a G3-S Custom Shock. These things come set up specifically for you with full adjustability. Next video will tackle the forks. Springs, gold valves, will get this CRF300L set right!

    I used race tech for new springs on my old 2000 drz400s, I heeded the advice of a veteran dual sport/single track racer. One of the first mods, get your suspension set up right. My current 2019 drz400sm still needs the springs from Race Tech. That should be happening in the next couple of months.

    I used racetech on my 675 track/race bike and the difference was amazing. As I got faster, the stock suspension couldn't handle certain bumps and would really upset the bike which of course limited how fast I could enter/exit turns or brake.. after upgrading, i was improving about 1s per lap each trackday.. pretty crazy how much confidence you gain when the bike isn't doing silly things under you.

    This past week I took a test ride on a KTM 500 EXC. It felt so precise and easy to maneuver compared to my stock CRF300L that I've been considering selling my beloved 300L. It's a life or death kinda decision, because I need a safest, surgically precise steering/maneuvering bike for treacherous, technical single track alone on steep mountains (I do nature photography). I assumed the precision and hence easier riding experience on the KTM was all about the weight difference of 43 lbs. But, now I'm wondering if it was actually more about the suspension. Have you ridden KTM 500 EXC for comparison to your upgraded suspension CRF300L, or can you speculate otherwise in how your 300L handles for slow technical single track after upgrading?

  • @dumptrump3788
    @dumptrump3788 Před 7 měsíci

    The question is, if upgrading the suspension is so expensive them why not simply get a better bike to begin with? Or maybe get a used shock off another bike. As an example, my first "real bike" (Suzuki GS500) had limp noodle suspension front & rear, but for $100 the rear shock could be changed for an R6 unit & that sorted out the back end (I used Racetech springs in the forks) Is there any similar swap for the CRF300?

    Look what a muffler costs for a bike. I just bought a titanium muffler for my bike, $1700. Are there cheaper mufflers, sure but you get what you pay for. Sound and suspension are important to me. Engine mods are the most costly and affect reliability with more heat. I buy the engine with the horsepower from the factory. Engine mods cost so much for just a few more horsepower. Suspension will make you go faster. Lighting you bike helps everything including braking, acceleration, and handling. Harley just places a bigger motor but that adds weight. Harley needs more carbon fiber, aluminum, and composites but that is more expensive than just placing a larger, heavier motor.

    stop greasing bolts lol. why do you figure every single factory bike doesn't have greasy bolts? because the collar don't slide on the bolt, the bearing is the rotating interface. if you get grease on the bolt head it messes up the torque to clamp force relationship, can cause the bolt to loosen, and in a bad scenario you can yield a bolt.

    • @TheGardenSnake
      @TheGardenSnake  Před 2 lety +2

      The reason why I do it is because I've had to beat these bolts out on many bikes. Steel on steel down under the bike, it's gonna get gimmy and wet and STUCK. Grease will stop that. The bearing will still be the rotating interface when there's any real pressure on it. I don't put grease on the threads, that would be stilly.

    Looks like a good beginner bike for a light guy or girl. Way too small for a adult. I have a 1330 cc F-3S Spyder. I’m about 180LBS and about 5 ft 10 inches tall. This would be way to small for me.thanks for showing us though.

      @@troy9er Read your post. The 1330 cc F-3S Spyder is not a motorcycle. But anyway, the CRF300L is not a small bike. The seat height is just shy of 35", and higher with a new shock. Darn, it may even be too big for you.

    Why spend all that money on a 300 should have just bought a 450 and that would have been better stock than that 300 will ever be modified.
