SWEDEN EUROVISION 2022 - REACTING TO CORNELIA JACOBS 'HOLD ME CLOSER' [FIRST LISTEN AND REVIEW]

  • Hi guys, and welcome back to my channel! If you're new here, my name's Rachel and I'm a huge Eurovision fan, as well as a musician. In today's video I reacted to for the first time to Sweden's entry for ESC 2022: 'Hold Me Closer' by Cornelia Jacobs.
    Sweden have a good input into the popular music industry, with a strong chart presence and multiple song-writing credits. And this is precisely why I pay attention to them when it comes to Eurovision.
    Last year, Sweden finished mid-table with 'Voices' by Tusse, a song that was quite generic, and in my opinion, not up to their usual standard.
    However, that seemed to be a blip, as they have come back stronger this year with a female artist, the first since 2014.
    'Hold Me Closer' has a lush and orchestral quality to its backing track, which is mainly driven by a thick and wonderful string section. It also cleverly takes the music from orchestral to synth pop-like by adding in a nice chugging 80s inspired synth bassline into the second verse, which was a nice touch in my eyes.
    The vocal and general performance on stage was very professional, Cornelia carrying herself with confidence and singing the lyrics with conviction.
    All that being said, I do have a few criticisms about this. Whilst the backing track is so lush and sophisticated, I can't say that the lyrics and melody match up to this. The lyrics aren't anything striking or new, just quite average if I'm honest. There's no clear standout melody line either. The chorus is nice, but due to the descsening and formulaic melody line, there is a mismatch between the melody and backing track. I also struggled to recall some of the verses. There was also quite a predictability about it all - it was quite easy to identify in my mind where the song was going:
    Quiet First Verse - Quiet Chorus - Building Second Verse - Full Chorus - Quiet Bridge - Closing Full Chorus.
    This is not innovative or groundbreaking...
    But bearing that all in mind, this is a good and strong entry from the swedes once again, and there is no doubt that this will finish in the top ten, potentially the top five. It's universal and will be consumed and appreciated by lots of demographics across all four corners of Europe.
    Initial Score: 8/10

    Reaction 01:40

      I have a few observations to make. But before I want to make clear that I'm not a musician, I'm just a normal idiot but can sometimes think.
      That said : the music is nice, it builds up slowly.
      She doesn't howl, and this is the point : the lyrics. I needn't have to say that loads of us have been there. So yes, it does strike me.
      That she's beautiful, isn't the criteria, there's something to this song. I don't know if it will win, it has in many hearts

    • @redreliever
      @redreliever Před 2 lety +1

      Two of the reasons why I'm disturbed by this song are the reasons why it might win.
      1.Her stage presence is so staged it bothers me a lot.
      2.The chorus is so easy to remember it kills me. I've listened this song twice, I will remember it forever.
      Other reasons are: the verse melody line is really meh, sustained just by her presence and the good instrumentation, but this brings all the attentions to the solution of this building up, this easy and memorable chorus, that is good, but those 10 seconds line are repeated seven times!
      Therefore it's all concentrated to that. And at the end of the second time you hear it, you think "Never again".
      It's 2 months to go. There are many way more interesting songs around.
      ESC fans will soon get bored by it, but what about easy listeners around Europe who didn't listen to it yet?

    I see your point. No, the lyrics wasn't innovative. It was all about emotion, you know. And that _emotion,_ combined with her voice is what it is all about. The instrumentals matches that brilliantly imo. It's sincere and raw. Also, the lyrics are Cornelia's story, her experience of a breakup.

    It's interesting to hear your analysis abt the chorus going down while the orchestra going up.The lyrics are abt wanting to hold back the one you love, even if it's just for the night. So the orchestra is trying to rise but the sung line is holding it back. It actually fits. i think it put words in that feeling I had while listening to that song that made me completely charmed by it.
    Lyrically I'm not one to like those kind of lyrics but I find myself loving the sincerity and authenticity in these.
    I really really enjoy this song and most of all the performance, a big favorite of mine for this year, and frankly the only song so far that gave me winner vibe. Best of luck Sweden!

    INSANE banger, OMG she had to win. And she can really win whole Eurovision. 10/10 from me and it's really rare rating; in past 5 eurovisions I gave 10/10 only to S10, Gjon's "Tout l'Univers", Elina Nechayeva's "La Forza" and Barbara's "Voila" (she actually got 12/10 since its my favourite song ever to this day).
    And I catched melody line very quick, after first listen I could easily "hmm" at least the chorus melody.

      Of course, but it's really not close to 50% female...
      My take is that although the gender ratio of the 28 contestants usually is fairly equal, the public voting seems to favour male artists, since I believe more women/girls are voting, and typically public voting judges the artist more than the actual song

      @Stuaie1 Před 2 lety

      I loved Sanna's entry, she totally nailed it and the staging was wonderful. It's still one of my most played Eurovision songs. It is very similar to this year's entry in that we all know how slick it will be on the night and Cornelia will give a flawless performance. I just see it being beaten by something more original, as Sanna was. Good luck though Sweden, you're still setting the bar!

    With regards to the style of music not matching the emotion, I actually love that, and it reminds me of Robyn. Only when Calum Scott covered Dancing On My Own did people realise the devastation in that song. Until that point, it was an electro-pop song with unrecognised depth.
    This is the same. The melody and beat grips you in, and once you pay attention, you get hit in the gut by the reality of the lyrics. Kind of how life goes really!

    What a world we live in when you have to justify your right to having an opinion as a professional musician. Just on a personal level, I don't know if I fully agree with you about the melody, because I found that its relative simplicity made this one of the easier songs to remember this season. And I rate the quality of the lyrics much higher than you do. Which isn't all to say it's my favorite song, though I do like it quite a bit. Obviously, though, I think you offer valuable insight even when I don't fully agree!

  • @vixikie5228
    @vixikie5228 Před 2 lety +8

    The emotions in her voice and expressions/stage presence while singing tells you more and makes you feel more than the lyrics so I think that makes it up for the lyrics in my opinion. I have not been this happy and proud of a song from my country in many years. Finally my favorite wins. Can't wait for it being performed on a bigger stage with an bigger audience.

  • @durabelle
    @durabelle Před 2 lety +21

    I've been listening to this song for a while now and absolutely love it. Will it win the Eurovision? Probably not. Do I care? Not in the least 😄
    For me this is the only song this far from this year that I've wanted to hear again and again, and it will stay on my most personal playlist for years. Why? Simply because it makes me feel and remember things I want to feel and remember. I love the rawness in her voice, the lack of super high notes, the intimate feeling this simplicity creates.
    To me this feels quite like a song version of Before Sunrise, which coincidentally is my all time favourite movie 😁 Bare emotion, simple storyline, painfully easy to identify with for anyone who's ever met the right one at the wrong time. The movie got a couple of sequels though, as did my personal story, so there's always hope even when something feels like the end! And if it didn't turn out well, I'd still take the same risks all over again and let myself sink just as deep, because that level of bittersweet emotion would be worth experiencing.
    I can see your points too, and any critique is totally fair, especially since you're looking at these songs from a more technical and cultured viewpoint. Most of the voting audience doesn't care about measurable quality though, which is why I could see this doing well on audience score. But whatever the final score I believe this is my winner for this year.

    The first honest and constructive reaction video I have seen about this song.
    Most of these videos only have one thing on their mind - Getting as many like as they can by being over the top encaustic about whatever song they react to. (Preaching for the choir sort of speak).
    10 out of 10 on this reaction based on that quality (honesty) alone. The honest reaction in itself?! That's 12 points (Eurovisionstyle) Perfect understanding of music as an art form. She nailed it!
    Everything I as a Swede was concerned about (things no one has said anything about so far) she pointed out as small flaws in the melody and composition of the song. 👍
    Always nice to get confirmation from someone that I'm not imagining the problem I had with my favorite.👍😊

For instance, I had a few critiques with the Australian song and some people got very vicious in the comments which is off putting. I really appreciate you saying this because it gives me confidence to continue with my reviews :)

    Hi Rachel, this is my first time finding your channel and I'm SUBSCRIBED! What a great critique, I totally get what you're saying about the lyric mismatch and the descending melody and it is those small points that do make or break a song's winning chance. I do find Sweden's songs often miss out with the lyric (how can we forget "I will be popular, I will be popular"?! Not a phrase you would ever say in that context.)
    On the plus side, this song is a real grower and probably my favourite this year after a few listens, but I don't think it will have the initial pull to draw in the first time listeners.
    Great appraisal! ❤️

    You can actually be critical with this song and the rest, from the music point of view, I respect that a lot, you know more of that than me.
    I really love this song, the funny thing is that I don't find it perfect, I actually love the fact that Sweden is able to show some imperfection after so many perfect acts with not much of a soul and a heart, but in this one as simple as it is, I found a heart, a soul and a voice. It's my personal winner, and I wish Europe can feel what I've felt since I heard the first time.

    As always, my raw opinion... Because of the sheer interestingness of so many songs this year, and because the words aren't as you said groundbreaking, I know that this won't make my top tier as an individual song. BUT - I still enjoy this and can tell it's raw, honest, and it's different from the last few Swedish entries (honestly it's the first time I've given them a mark higher than 6 in years). Cruising to the left-hand side of the final, no doubt.

    Same, I think the backing track is a bit distracting sometimes, especially in the 2nd half, but I love Cornelia anyway and hope she does well (Also agree that Sweden last year was weak)! Also, you have a new subscriber now because I really like also to hear valid criticism from reactors as well :))

    finally, after seven years/editions (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021; so excluding the Mamas, who won in 2020 but didn't manage to perform at Eurovision because of everyone-knows-what), Sweden sends a woman again, this time with a song better than most of their post-2015 entries. Stockholm 2023 is now more likelier than ever before.
    .
    P.S. as I am currently in my early 20s age-wise, I hope, in the future, I can have a spouse similar to you (someone who is already a Eurovision Song Contest fan or someone who, at least, likes music in general and can be indoctrinated, either consciously or unconsciously, to become a Eurovision Song Contest enthusiast).

  • @emersondecastromorais3724

    I love this song, but, to be honest, I do agree with you in some parts. In my opinion, the song definitely has simple lyrics, but Cornelia's interpretation and even the instrumental can compensate that. I'm not a musician like you, so I can't think the same way you do (musically speaking), but if we carefully think about music in general, we can say that what matters in that a great song can reach and touch so many people and defintely this song will go well at Eurovision. I believe strongly this is what music is about in the end: to make people feel the emotions the songs can spread (even if it's just a silly and funny song like "give that wolf a banana")

  • @Segegerstadt
    @Segegerstadt Před rokem +1

    I agree. Mostly.
    About the lyrics:
    "I found the right one at the wrong time".
    This simple line is worth a lot in most peoples ears.
    Probably you could do better all over. But it's slightly better than average concerning pop music and ballads.
    Favourites of mine are songs like "Hello" with Lionel Richie.
    About the general melody:
    To become the greatest song ever, yes then you have to take another step. But the melancholy is there when the strings breakens.
    "Hold me closer", both song and singer, reminds me of one of my favourites all time; Bonnie Tyler.
    With help of some extraordinary people she had only a hand-five of legendary songs.
    This is as close to that I've ever heard.

    I liked listening to your analysis, as a layperson who just listens to music and doesn’t like general American pop, Swedish pop and European pop is general has more soul and character, not sure if you ever heard the version where she sings with an actual orchestra in the back it gave me chills, I think lyric wise, the one that gets me is, “ I found the right one at the wrong time” and it’s so pertinent to my feeling and situation at the moment.

    I actually love that the music is ascending, while the melody is descending, because I think that is the whole point of the message of the song. She is singing about a good relationship (the ascending music), but it is coming to an end (descendin melody).. I think Sweden will be in top 3 this year. Ukraine will probably win because of the horrible war they are going through.
    But great video. So thank you for that.

We also have a good instrumentation , but again the music line is a little weak.. Euphoria was stronger in every part...and that isn't. Of course everyone is allowed to express his opinion.. So don't pay attention to anyone who will say the opposite. That's nonsense

  • @matt_maciek
    @matt_maciek Před 2 lety +6

    I don’t agree with your point on the melody. A repeated pattern can be a very useful tool and actually bring a quality to the melody itself, you don’t want it scattered all over the scale - instead it could be better to give the listener something to recognise and follow in a melody (especially in a pop song). Here the pattern is only repeated once and it doesn’t really follow the same path: you’ve got a b-a#-g# followed by a leap down a fifth to c#, the second time around the pattern moves down half step and it goes a#-g#-f# but then goes down a third to d# and leaps up a 5th to a# - I’d say its a pretty effective way of balancing the leaps and step-wise motion overall within an ambitious of a 7th (which is actually adventurous enough for a pop song) even if it’s not groundbreaking in any way.
    I wouldn’t say the lyrics are bland or too generic either but they certainly fade in comparison to Greece which is also about a breakup.
    Great review nonetheless. :)

    I agree with the lyrics criticism, but this is eons better than what most Swedish pop lyrics are like, which says a lot. That being said, I do believe lyrical simplicity is an asset in Eurovision as most listeners won’t have a good understanding of even intermediate English vocabulary.

      True, there's a thing called over analysing. Why do we like this or that ? Most of the time we don't really know why. Oh , it's pretty ! Erm, yes but what's it pretty about? Are you going to dessicate it ? Oh, this is delicious ! Which , what ingredients did you like ? You can follow the recipe but you'll never make a dish taste twice the same. It depends on your mood, the weather, loads of stuff. I like this song, it's simple and no showing off. I'm sorry, but we eurovision watchers, don't really go into details, okay, he or she howls to much, why is she practically naked ? That's nice to watch but it's the song here. And why are the men not so ? Where's the equality women would also like that. But the eurovision is a moment when people around the world come together and have fun. Those who can. And anyway, a week later, we forget who won. But we had a great night. Don't spoil things.

    I agree with you regarding this song following a generic formula vers-pre-chorus-bridge..., but that's no problem for me.
    Many of the best songs ever written follow a similar formula.
    Melody: I wanted a clearer counter progression in the backing track. The singing melody is simple and beautiful.
    About the lyrics... a standard broken heart theme, nothing more, nothing less.
    Performance: Cornelia has a great presence and her voice have a nice rasp to it.
    Total: It's a song that get stucked in your head after a few listens.
    Winning material? I don't think so, but sure getting trough to the final.
    Finally: This is your channel. You have of course every right to express your criticism in every way.
    Great review.

    Good analytic skill of especially the instrumental part of the song. Do not agree with you regarding the lyrics since I find them extremely powerful. This is about a last goodbye from someone trying to just get everything they can from that. Like staying time forever in this very moment. The tragic undertone of that is self explanatory. But it is the pain of loss and that to me is one of the strongest universal feeling there is. Lost and crushed dreams and in that very moment you can feel like ever before when that person hold you closer.
