  • This is a video walkthrough / playthrough / runthrough / etc of Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcade's Revenge for the SNES.
    Considering how many times I've played through this game, I'm still amazed I haven't figured out the usefulness of that one attack Storm can do...I know I don't complete her stages with flying colors, but at least I didn't lose a life...I guess I could have tried a bit harder, but oh well. With you being able to refill her "life" up rather easily, I guess you don't have to try too hard....

I remember beating NES versions of Hunt for the Red October and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that would frustrate a lot of gamers.

    Because they are all trapped by Arcade and he designed each area to put them at a disadvantage. Aside from sticking her in space where there is no atmosphere at all for her to control, sticking Storm underwater is the most disadvantageous place for her to fight (it doesn't help that she's claustrophobic IIRC).

      It's a robot, not the real deal. Arcade has a knack for making robot minions and dressing them up as different characters. Check out the boss fight Gambit has with the "Black Queen". Her arms blow up and you can see wiring and stuff. Also explains why most of the enemies explode.

    @ShinobiNeon Před 10 lety +1

    I remember this being the most brutally difficult X-Men game of all time. I played this as a kid and this game kicked my ass. I loved the music though. It's just a shame you don't really get to use Storm's full powers. Her stages could've been the most awesome, but instead you're restricted to swimming and shooting lightning from your eyes (which would be pretty dangerous and unsafe underwater).

    • @qmchale5130
      @qmchale5130 Před 7 lety

      Near the end, Storm gets to play like the others, but that's it. Could've been every one of her stages, but Arcade had to be a dick and place her in claustrophobic stages. Sigh...

  • @Regnorok
    @Regnorok Před 10 lety +11

    probably one of my favorite games growing up. Never was able to beat any of the second levels. The devs really understood the characters when they made this (like how storm is claustrophobic and it made me feel it in her levels.) The music is probably the most notable thing about this game though, everyone had their own themes and it really brought life to the levels as well as being really suited for the characters. I dont know why so many people are hating on this game, this game was way beyond its time, every character had different gameplay aspects that kept it from getting stale. The level designs are aesthetically unique and offer a variety of gameplay. Seriously, there were only a handful of other games of this caliber.
    Thanks for the play-through. Though this is THE one i couldn't beat, i gain some closure through this video.

I now see why I sometimes did not like it and thought it was not really any fun. It is just one of those games where you have to actually know what to do and be able to get through it without any major difficulties. As far as I know, the further you get ahead of Juggernaut, the faster he chases you. The trick is to stay as close to him as possible and hit him every chance you get. Don't expect to kill him quickly though. There's no real trick to beating him. He always dies just before you finish the stage. Probably one of the hardest bosses in any XMen game.

  • @NexusArtRealm
    @NexusArtRealm Před 8 lety +10

    I don't know... I may be in the minority here, but as a comic book genre illustrator and long time fan of the classic super hero genre, I really appreciated the hell out of this game. Contrary to people's thoughts, I think this game had fantastic music that tapped into the 70s era of super heroes (think late 70s Spider-Man TV movie as well as Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends cartoon show of the same era). It doesn't get any purer than that, guys. I especially love the music in Wolverine's fun house level. It's amazingly well done. Gambit had that badass techno beat that shifted from the 70s style music to a more modern 90s style (which is very appropriate) and Storm had what was probably the eeriest of sound tracks on the game. All of them were beautifully done, and no two alike. :)
    Second, the graphics. Ok, so they weren't ground breaking, but it was hardly anything I'd call horrible. The game touches upon a very classic arcade style and I can very much appreciate the clarity of each map and their enemy sprites. It's what I'd call, moderate standard graphics. Nothing amazing, but good enough to not distract or break the game play.
    Speaking of game play, the controls are sharp. Razor sharp. Not something LJN was known for in their later catalog of games (they must have had a good team of programmers working on this specific game). You have to agree, the hit detection is spot on, from Cyclops optic blasts to even Wolverine's tiny pixelated claws.
    The challenge of the game is all pattern based. There really is no unpredictable chores to get through. Once you gain decent memory of the maps you play, you'll eventually know how to get around these hurdles, just like in the video (which was done beautifully, SaikyoMog). However, if you go into this expecting to beat it on your first try....well.. you have the wrong approach. This is what I call a "true game". It's meant to challenge you. Keep you on your toes and make fast decisions. It's not like modern games where things are downplayed for you so you can be kept happy and think you're top pro. This one needs you to pull all your resources together and stay focused ....and have patience. lol.
    It's definitely not easy but it's also not impossible.. You just can't get complacent with this game like you can with others.
    If there's anything I don't like about this game, it's two things. No save points and no continues. Honestly, this game would be a pleasure to play with every day if it had at least 3 or more continues after all your characters bit the dust. Once you're out of lives, that's it. It's over. You start right from the beginning. I can understand why many would find this frustrating after crawling on their knees through each map. I know I was. But there is a glimmer of hope in regards to continues and lives. There is a known trick you can do over and over and over with Gambit on his first map. There are vids of this. You can accumulate as many lives as you want and this alone will give you a much better shot at beating the game. Just be sure you pick a day you know you'll have all to yourself because... no save points.
    So... all in all, this is actually not a bad game at all. Just don't expect Super Mario World level of easy here.

      As someone who never really read the comics and didn't even knew half of this game's cast when playing this as a little kid, the individual level design and game mechanics were really cool. It sort of just fits each character and tells you what they do.

    God damn, I forgot just how annoying difficult this game was. It's definitely worthy of the AVGN treatment. The graphics were unforgivably shitty considering it came out on both Genesis and SNES, the hit detection could be really spotty if I recall correctly, and for the love of God, you only start out with 4 lives for all of them. But worst of all had to be inconsistent controls and game mechanics for all the characters, especially Cyclops, who was just so awkward compared to everyone else asides from Storm. If they really were trying to place the characters at a disadvantage (Arcade's MO), it really should have been spelled out in a few cutscenes. There's the potential to have made a really great game, but everything just fell way short, save for the AMAZING music.

      What I would have done would have been to have had the first part of everyone's stages play towards their advantages. You stick Storm in a flying environment, Spidey in a pseudo-Ninja Gaiden level, Wolverine in a straight platforming beat-em-up level, and Cyclops and Gambit in varying types of shooter-centric platforms. However, the second levels would suddenly flip it on them (explained in a cut-scene, of course). Storm is now in that claustrophobic water trap, Wolverine in a bullet hell where he has to close distance with everyone, Spidey in an open environment where he has no walls or ceilings to utilize, Cyclops constantly has enemies around him at all heights, and Gambit suddenly is faced with more flying type enemies. So long as everyone has consistent 8-way oriented controls, it could have worked. Oh well.

    Man, that game had some really good music and unique dark atmosphere (tailored to each character). It was pretty tough. Never made it far, but enjoyed the different play-style/game modes each character brought with them.
    I think I should note that I never really read the comics. The Franco-Belgian BDs(comics) are more of a thing in Europe, then the US super hero comics. But even then, I appreciate the gritty style of it. It's a really solid game that doesn't require you to be a fan or reading comics. I think there even was a Hulk game for the SNES that was very similar in it's style and difficulty.

    considering how i was unable to even get to stage two of any of the x-men in my entire childhood, this game must be commended for making me try again and again. great soundtrack and feel. Just with no save points, enemy health bar and internet to give you clues, i homestly thought the game wasnt supposed to be beaten. now i know it was this hard, just to hide the fact that there isnt even a proper outro sequence to this game haha.

    One of my all time favorite games for the SNES. I loved this game and played it often... The sound effects really brought me back. What's funny is that for years, I couldn't remember the name, I had completely forgot that this was a Spider-man title with the X-men. I'll be buying this immediately now that I know the correct title!
